People want to be entertained. People want to remove the thinking too hard part of their brain and have their senses bombarded. The daft stuff on TG and TGT do that. (Time will tell re viewing figures) I can't imagine many would want to see a 15 minute real driving test between a Ford Focus 1.5LXi v a Hyundai i20 (1.6 GDiPDQ) v blah blah....

Rory, I reckon the problem with the old style TG would be that 25 and more years ago there were a few great cars, a few good cars and lots of mediocre to crap cars. There was a world of difference. Nowadays you can buy a Hyundai that is every bit as good as sporting VW or Ford RS and any number of proper fast sports cars from £35k up.....To me a new test like those of the 80s and 90s would be toe-curlingly boring.
All can do a limited 155, all do 60 in 5.7 to 6.1s, all have cupholders/satnav/timers blah blah
TG pioneered the outlandish car test where pretty much any of us could and buy one, then drive it to the Stelvio or Spain/Morocco etc.
We, as people who love 2 and 4 wheels, are the odd ones out. Most people just view them as a means of A to B transport and wouldn't watch an old style programme..IMHO
#I do think they'd benefit from losing some of the old ways but I'm glad they've not gone and got a girl in the line up just because they're the BBC (That worked so well for the ITV4 TT coverage last year )

    My tuppence worth.....

If you want a detailed car review (by some nobody) of your mundane boring as fcuk Vauxhall Astra 1.9 Diesel, search on YouTube. There's loads. I did this when I was umming and ahhing between an A Class, a 1 Series & an A3. I didn't wait for an episode with Harris, Le Blanc, Clarkson et al doing it. They won't.

If you want to be entertained by 3 (presenter type folk) petrolheads dicking about in cars you'll probably never own (either because of the ludicrous cost or you don't have a Top Gear / TGT workshop and unlimited funds to spunk on ridiculous & unnecessary modifications), watch these type of programmes.

The bit that gets me, everyone seems to compare back to clarkson, May and Hammond. I didn't watch any of the last two series' with those three as it had become boring and repetitive ad nauseum. I'm enjoying the new three at the moment.

Fair point Nige (and fully taken on-board), perhaps I'm being too cynical & contentious...

    Amen brother!

All I seek is a proper car-show about cars, and less of the circus-tricks...
I guess I'll just stick with the more interesting "Chasing Classic Cars" with Wayne Carini and/or "Salvage Hunters - Car Restorers" with Drew & Paul (who I believe is a friend of Jim C's).

It's weird how they can't start off steady and then just gradually build their own USP, instead they've jumped straight onto/into old ways...haven't we seen demolition derby before? Haven't we done the 'German accent bird' thing to death
Parts of it made me laugh out loud, others made me cringe. Have so few people got real imaginations ?

Last night had some proper funny parts and some cringe segments, Why cant they get rid of the Celeb bit that was nearly a 3rd of the show last night & its shit.

Last nights was the worst so far but seems that Harris has had to stand up for himself on Twitter as people think he's being picked on which it seems he is at some parts.

This is the nub, we all get different bits from TG.
For once I enjoyed the 'celeb' bit as they aren't a vacuus couple of D listers. She comes across incredibly well for a Royal and he has proper sporting pedigree. As a couple, they seem genuinely 'together' and for me, added to last nights show.

I thought the last episode was hilarious. I haven't laughed quite as much for some time I thought they were really getting into it now.

The celeb bit was a bit 'Meh' though for me.

    I fast forwarded that bit.

The Borneo bit was OK. Not the best episode this series.

The flicking of the bird was odd to watch, funny though.

It was OK, found it a bit odd taking those cars through Borneo. Would have been more fun in Jimnys, 1 old and 1 new.

I enjoyed the episode, but I was fairly perplexed by their 'celebration' of rare cars which involved taking a unique Matra Bagheera to the jungle just so they could wreck it? No better than banger racers. This isn't my BBC, etc.

I fear you're right. It felt like there was perhaps 15 minutes of content last night. We've seen crap cars in the jungle, we've seen cars on rafts on muddy jungle rivers etc etc.
There must be something different they could do ??

Clarksonís next series willl be exactly that i reckon, perhaps less car orientated but the 3 of them together but new ideas. Whatever Top Gear does it will never be out of clarkson/hammond/may shadow.

That said tg is still pretty good and watchable.
