That PH piece is basically an ad for a rally supply/prep outfit. Lucky them. They're still offering that exact shell for sale on their site for £22k.

Had it been breaking news that Ford are going to enter the high-priced-heritage game by factory-assembling some leftover Mk2 shells to modern spec using an army of blue-oval lifers with names like Melvin, Clive and Walter, that'd be something else...

I'd be surprised if they weren't using Chinese bodies (that aren't the best). I'm pretty sure the original parts can't be had anymore.
I'm arresting you for murdering my car you dyke digging tosspot

I bet you haven't been able to get a mk2 shell from Ford for 30 yrs or more?

They are using these shells which openly states that they are not perfect!

I think these new shells aren’t made out of the best steel & therefore rust more - this is what I heard.

When I looked at them at the auto sport the finish wasn’t great. For ex the joint between the bulkhead to the heater box panel, instead of being an overlapped spot weld was a seam butt well - which didn’t look tidy.

There were other differences in the rear tubs as well but hey ho.

Me-I’m currently over the moon that mk1 Escort roofs are now available which will help me get rid of the stupid sunroof in mine before sale.

We will not enter into after-sale discussion with customers about the finish and fine details of the shells, they are sold as seen. (Even the Escorts coming out of the Ford factories in the 60s and 70s were far from perfect).
Sold as seen? Spares or repair? Very encouraging!

I suspect the guys who use these for rally cars will be doing a lot of body repair and reinforcement before adding a cage and paint...

Iím guessing that is - in part - why the fully finished article is £60k. I suspect that there is a whole bunch of work that goes into that shell before it is ready for build. I might be wrong.

Mates with a motorsport prep firm had one (Chinese shell) in to turn into a rally car. They said it wouldn't be a brilliant Base for a road car, some suspect panel gaps, but as a Base for motorsport it was a lot better to start something that wasn't rusty.

You're not wrong, which is why an unprepped shell is £7.5k and a prepped one is £22k...

What is decent, new engine, gearbox, diff, etc. from a ‘proper’ company? Much change out of £15k? Steering, suspension, brakes, seats, etc. The list goes on and on.

    £60k looks fair.

I also look at a Caterham, which can have the same running gear, 500kg less and nowhere near £22k in bodywork so is much cheaper and is loads faster.

    Or an Alpine, £10k cheaper.

But that is not the point. The mark 2 is iconic and here is a turn key new one. I predict that demand will be high. And probably somewhat cheaper than a RetroPower mk1... and bundles cheaper than a Jag continuation or something.

I’m completely sold on the theory. The execution is now the question mark...

If you have deep pockets, spending 60k looks easy enough. https://www.millingtonengines.co.uk/new-engines/
