E39 M5 performance is now at Bangeromics level

Looking back at the M5 thread started me thinking about how much performance you can get for very little money. All those fast performance cars, petrol and diesel are easily in the sub £2k bracket now. I accept they may not be reliable or cheap to run, but it is possible to buy a very fast car for relatively low ££'s.

335d's, 330d's, silly V8 mercs, Imprezas and EVO's, Audi's and Pheatons are all very cheap these days if you can afford the insurance.

Enjoy cheap and fast cars at throw away money, if it all goes bang?

I'd get out of the S8 for an M5.

I’ll probably offload the Cupra in the summer. Could go Ronin.

    2001 facelift le mans blue

Comprehensive service history including replacing nearly all suspension components including genuine shock absorbers all round in my ownership.

Excellent bodywork, jacking points all intact quiet engine which uses little oil

Interior is excellent, Michelin ps4's all round

Just ticked over to 139 thousand but would never believe it driving it

Similar price and performance to the CLK55 AMG I bought towards the end of last year.
    ~350bhp and 380lbs/ft for less than £2.5k

Yeah it's rusty and the odd electric gizmo doesn't work (who's needs an electric rear blind anyway?!) but the mechanicals are tough, basic running costs are lower than you'd expect: easy 24mpg on a run, £350 insurance, old tax rules.
Beauty of cars at this price level is one big bill and you can walk away, list it for spares or repair on eBay or break it for bits.

Enjoy the crazy cheap V8's while we can, before we know it we'll all be in souless electric powered machines reminiscing about the good old days!

You'd have to ruin it to lose anything there mate. Someone in the club listed a breaker recently and the queue went round the block.

    Too right.

    The Ronin is very cool.
...the E39 M5 is the only thing that's cooler

When the time is right, that is the right move

The E39 M5 still has the trophy for best car advert. 4m 30s if you want to skip the cheese.

I wish I could find a 335D for £2k. Paid £4,650 for a half decent 2006/56 one 3 months ago - 137k, mapped/DPF gone 350bhp, it shifts for sure but has a Cat C write off against it - big rear end hit, not repaired to A1 but presentable. Can be extended to 50mpg on a hypermiling run which is awesome for a 3 litre twin tubby 1.6 ton tank

Didn't feel like bangernomics to me, but it's definitely a step above my skoda for quality, low noise, refinement, blah blah. Plus is actually has 5 seats. That's rare for me!

    Still cheap though!

Admittedly, the cars I've seen are big miles but there's always a compromise.

Sounds similar to the W210 E55 I had the year before last. That was a big-hearted old girl. I imagine one would pull off the speedo on a local bypass too if one was so inclined.

The fine for getting knicked for that would probably be more than the car cost.
