Thread: Gordon Murray's mk1 Escort

  1. #1

    Gordon Murray's mk1 Escort

This should be worth following, Gordon Murray has tasked Leicestershire firm Retropower to build a modernised mk1 Escort.

    250bhp Cosworth duratec with mk3 MX5 6 spd box.

    Published on 15 Oct 2017

In Episode 1 we discuss the project brief and source a car as our project basis.

In Episode 2 we will be looking in more depth at the re-engineering of the suspension and drivetrain and find out how good (or bad!) the shell turns out to be.

Our challenge is to build a re-engineered MK1 Escort that utilises technologies and processes that were unavailable or uneconomical in the 1960's whilst retaining the essence of the original car's driving experience and tailoring the whole package to our client's requirements. No easy task when the client in question designed the McLaren F1!

That shell but it's an Escort so it's literally click & collect for panels.

This is fantastic & could show blinky the way to go (although they are two blokes with day jobs).

As I'm hoping for more time to myself next year that suggestion of Freelander rear suspension was a lightbulb moment for me. The key part being when he said 'reasonably big bearing' !

    Fantastic-just loving this.

Part 3. Some of the projects laying around the workshop are hardcore pornography.

I just wish they wouldn't interrupt so we can all hear what Gordon Murray thinks/expertise.

The big thing I take from that series, is that they all really care about his opinion, and the project as a whole. Yes the chatty man speaks over people a little bit, but that could well be down to the fact he has a camera shoved in his face and is a little nervous, or is just super keen on the project and his head is brimmed with ideas.

It's sad that the default is to knock others work, anything car related that is posted on here always has numerous people bemoaning that it isn't to their pleasing. Just enjoy it for what it is, don't nit pick for the sake of nit picking.

    I really enjoy the vids.

The main guy there has a few quirks, but he is a professional car builder and business man, not a presenter so I take the rough edges as part of the charm.

I haven't watched this latest video yet, but enjoying the series so far. I hope they do some more in-depth videos on the other cars in their workshop.

    Tried again.

    He's too annoying.

    Sacked it off.

Either build cars or make videos, if you can't, then don't try to do both.

I agree although to be fair here it is a lot better unless it is going on off stage.
I watched this latest episode & I think the nerves are settling & he wasn't as frustrating but he's a car chap, probably started off with his friends & ended up with this business where he's now building Gordon Murray an Escort.

I liked the bit where he said he would probably do a few track days.

At least it's fairly regular other than Blinky....

At least they're still alive and keeping the name going. So many once-great engineering companies have disappeared, either closed down or absorbed into larger companies and lost their identity.

To be fair it was because he interrupted too much.
However I believe he has taken the comments onboard and hopefully if anything got some media training in.

The last piece where he just talked to the camera was more polished.

It probably is fair to say and I think they touched on it that they weren't expecting to find the demand this has created.

    I really enjoy it.

I think the content & enthusiasm of the people involved completely trumps the lack of production polish

True but surely you must have been slightly irritated by the previous interrupting.
There were some on here that it got too much for.

I had a really good chat with the guys from Retro Power at the Retro Rides show. They're proper enthusiasts and I got the impression they could have talked all day had I not made my excuses and left. The quality of their builds are unbelieavably good in the metal.

They'd be my first stop after a lottery win. I'd drag an E30 over there and a blank cheque.

Iíd properly drop a Capri over...

The dry build piece was really important / interesting - and quite enlightening. I wonder how many home restorations push through virtually a full rebuild and disassembly this side of paint - including things like clip locations - just to get the end result spot-on.

If it makes any difference, Iíd quite like an independent rear end like Gordonís Escort and as a V6 would be traditional, the 3.5 V6 Ecoboost from the Raptor would do nicely. Clubsport spec and relatively restrained exterior.

Fantastic-I just love listening to what he has to say.
'Hand should drop off the wheel onto the gearstick (slightly backwards) '

He spent a long time looking at that gorgeous rear end .
I was shown a naff box section rear mount on some expensive rally car at the weekend but this was gorgeous with tube.

Well I love the build, and im sure ill love the finished product, but I got bored ten mins into the first episode.

I don't need 15 mins about how the fuel filler was routed or whatever.

Even watched this before the RB rally highlights last night.

Interesting in that it'll have no cage in it.
