    Itís been a while.....

But Iím fairly sure Iím buying a new toy this week! Iíve missed having a good fast road / track car since I sold the porker 2 years ago.

Caterham 620s, just in time for the snow

My current plans are to do quite a few track days in 2018 with it, I have a big itch that needs lots of scratching.

Yeah I fancied something safe, reliable and easy to drive in bad weather typical of our uk climate. Then I visited Caterham South.

Their insurance cover for test pilots insists the weather has got to be dry, the plan is for a test drive tomorrow, but we'll make a decision in the morning. if its a go....I'll be there about 10.30am.

Yes Jim, i needed the cash for a build project. The car sold in days, i just got lucky. Right type of buyer at the right time. I think its in Ireland now.

    Ideal winter purchase.

Rarely spins the tyres in any gear.

Trade the fat boy seats in for the R versions and this is perfect spec.

    Heated Carbon seats. Check.
    Smaller lightweight forged rims. Check.
Manual box, but 5 Speed, half check.

For those looking on the caterham website, itís the green one.

Trackday quiet(er) rear box also thrown in, Iíll leave the flame spitting side exit exhaust on for street giggles.

Yes, the SV. The standard narrow body, even low floor version is a little too small for my tall frame.

I know that Dale and Andy had a play on the Nurburgring with the model down - a 485S, which i think is the equivalent of our UK 420 model. They seemed impressed:

Dale also was lucky enough to have a spin in the 620 development mule back in 2013:

I had an amazing test drive last Sunday in mine. Its mind boggling even if you're used to rapid toys.

Took it out for a blat with a friend this afternoon around Hungerford & Newbury. Dry and 6 degrees. Thankful for heater and heated seats in the spec.

I can confirm it is as mad as a box of frogs and will willingly spin the rears in all gears except 5th. I couldnít get heat in the tyres on our route.

    Lovely.

Had mine out this weekend, have no heater or heated seats though. Also found it had no traction whatsoever. Really very quickly becoming a big Caterham fan though.

They do get under your skin pretty quickly. Still engaging today, but the basic design is as old as the hills. Chapman was a clever blighter.

If you want the engine longitudinally in the front with rear drive and as light a car as possible, there's not much else you can design. The mx-5, tvr, S2000, GT-86 all share dna. Just with modern fripperies added. Like heating. Windows. Roof ;-)

Afaik there were some "heat management" problems with the early cars. Certainly the overheating was fixed, probably with typical Caterham engineering. ie, they threw the stat over a hedge. The race cars rarely run one. My Caterham cools right off if you cruise, so I strongly suspect it doesn't have one. When you get used to it you will be able to keep it hot
