Wow. So much historic pain in those blog posts. Just an absolute catalogue of not getting things right...

Sounds like the fundamentals arenít far off though...

Where we extend the wiring we make sure no two joins are in the same place to avoid any bulging in the loom that we will eventually fit into a protective cover.

    This is there first mistake!

5 years and still not finished

Great idea at the time... should have gone forged turbo and got 400+bhp

    Anyway, not long now

I caught some feels too, as a catalyst for this conversion it's not been one of my finer suggestions so far. Crossing everything that this guy is legit and after the first test drive all is forgiven!

At least it's going to cost way less than buying an X5 from the chuckle brothers :D. Am I helping? :D - I'm only being brave as he's a flight away :D.

The Borg Warner wasnít around when we started this otherwise forged intervals, a BW turbo and 400bhp would have been far easier........

Also hoping a v8 is way more fun to drive than the Turbos :D. With a lot more noise and sense of occasion :D.

Tbh - this might have been a good father/son project to do together ? No...

I’m not sure about this Vvt but what I’ve heard about the zetec vvt is that it swings back & forth. Which amuses me greatly on those who have it locked on from 5k onwards.

Out of interest I wonder what the values of the component parts have done over the last 5 years ? Went up surely.
    Fingers crossed.

Really hope this is the final push and they get it running then tuned for you.

I still smile at the 'summer project' title although to be fair, you didn't say which summer...

It would Iain if either of us had any engineering nouse........ but we don’t!
I’d be happy to lock it at 5k in a vtec-esque spike if it made life easier!
That’s certainly a man-maths spin as yhe engine value has certainly gone up but the labour cost can’t be reclaimed!

I think there's a fault with the forum's time/date stamp system - it reads as if "next week" suddenly turned into a little over a year :(

Gently returning to nature, the dear old thing. He has a new beau coming. I haven't had the heart to break the news to the old Jaffa. If ever an old girl needed an enthusiastic new gent to show her a good time...

Don’t think I’d do it for £10k............... that would still be a loss

It wasn't a serious offer (unless you'd accepted it, in which case it would have been )

I had a similar thing, on a shorter timescale, with the recommissioning of my Droopsnoot Firenza. What was agreed as a 6 month piece of work ended up with me collecting the car in a barely driveable state 2 and half years later. I won't tell you all the dramas which followed but there were many.

Sadly, while I loved the car (and the huge sentimental attachment I had to it) the whole experience had soured my feelings and so I enjoyed it for a year or so, ticked off the bucket list things I had wanted to do, and then sold her on.

It has the potential to be my perfect car - understated/hairdresser car looks, spectacular performance (should be circa 300bhp per ton and even more torque) with amusing tail happy handling...... I just hope the pain of getting it across the line can be forgotten or it is vaguely reliable. I will get bored of it very quickly if it keeps shagging driveshafts etc...........

It was supposed to be a cut price Caterham but Iíll be in Roadsport territory by the time Iíve finished

This is all only going to lead to more tears.

    I blame Olly.

It’s already running the ZF 5 speed so the weak link will be the diff/driveshafts. I’m kind of expecting to have to replace the diff anyway although Nick’s original seemed to hold up to significant abuse with the 4.0L 1UZ

I’m not expecting it to run straight out the box and am prepared for further ‘fettling’! My comment above was more along the lines of ‘if it’s still shitting itself every fortnight next summer’ then I’ll set light to it!!

On the plus side, if past is prologue, it won't have even started shitting itself by next summer - so no need for it to meet a fiery death
