I'm not wanting to get into an argument, but a gauge is a much better indicator of how much oil pressure you actually have. It's purely my concerns that you may be risking damage on a great piece of kit, nothing more.
Thanks for the thoughts :) I suppose that my thinking is that if the secondary warning system wasn't there at all, and I was totally reliant on a stock switch and light, then I'd be none the wiser anyway. The adjustable switch was set at idle when the oil was hot, such that it just flicks on and off. When it does this, the oil pressure gauge shows decent enough pressure (although it's admittedly difficult to stare at the gauge for too long mid corner!)

I ran a similar secondary, adjustable switch on my S14, setup in the same way which also flicked on and off with a bit of surge, and that was a stock sump etc.

The stock (i.e. lexus stock) switch also is wired into the fuel system such that the engine cannot fire until minimum pressure is reached.

I did um and ah about accusump, and in the end didn't bother on the basis that pressure looked healthy. As Iain says, it's done a fair few miles on track now, and all is going well.

What diff will it run?/ check the inner front chassis legs too.

You should have bought my old one. Intrigued to see how much it all costs, quite an interesting package.

Nick won't be ready for the car for a while so the plan is to collect it in the next couple of weeks and then take it to Olly's (Brando) engineering mates to deal with any chassis issues.
Will probably do a full rebush at the same time and maybe fit a BBK and new suspension, but I'll chat to Nick about that first.

    Cheeky cnut...........
No I chose a Mk2 because it solves the issue of where to put the air filter (current goes where the headlight should be on Nick's Mk1)
It is also because I think it is better for Nick business-wise as he can take both cars to the Autosport show next year and show what can be achieved I.e. Mk1 or Mk2, full on track spec or Clubsport
Cage to be discussed - as a Clubsport spec I'd rather not have a full cage but will take advice whether I fit a TRLane prefab thing or a custom cages half cage.

My canoe is about 290bhp / tonne. What are you hoping for bhp wise? Guess not far off and if so it could be tricky to keep up!

Traction is more of an issue than lack of torque for me so that could be your enemy. Mind you roll on pace of yours will be amazing!

Am I counting power to weight before or after I get in?!!

Think we will be very similar.
Engine is 300bhp/300lb ft stock so with an airbox and exhaust might tickle it up to 310/320 of each
I'm not interested in tuning it as yet........... unless you're faster
The V8, despite being all alloy, is about 85kg heavier than the original 1.8 so I'm guessing a weight of about 1100kg to power to weight will be about 290bhp/tonne......... Game on!!

One of the smaller TR lane bars (with harness bar - though Si and Jem custom made a better bar for me) would be ideal for CS spec. With some additional body bracing, not sure if TR lanes make that, or if Nick will do that as kit too.

    my 2c.

Some of the TR lane bars aren't very 'wide' across the shell as they mount inside the seatbelt towers.

I'd much rather have the one most like the Hard Dog (if they still do it) that mounts to the front of the tower. This does impede use of seatbelts a bit though....

I'd recommend some frame rails for additional stiffening too.

Looking at the website you want the TD or Sprint..

Thanks for the offer Olly but it's in Essex.... I'm not sure I have the patience to trailer it that far
I'm adjudicating on a gross misconduct in London next week so I might try and tie it in then.
I might have just bought a hard top for 300 too which is also in London so might collect that on the way home!

Why do if always have to find cars that are such a long way away?!!

Because we live in such a horrible shitty place, with terrible weather (like today's cloudless sunny sky). I wish everyone would work out Devon is so much nicer, and closer :D.

    Ta

The issue I have is seat fitting. It is well known that GT width/fat boy seats won't fit so I need to find a solution. Ideally I'd also like the seat to go right back to the rear bulkhead too..... Olly's tillet seats are fine for the track but perhaps uncomfortable for touring?
Might go and speak to Si and Jem about a bespoke half cage and see what the seat options are.
The most comfortable Caterham seat I have ever used was an old bench seat! The transmission tunnel and body kept your lower body in place and the harnesses secured your torso.... Not sure if the MX5 body is too wide for this but if I have to have something made I will!

    Picked up the car today.
The engine and brakes show the 140k mileage (what do you expect for 900?!) but the bodywork is mint
Essentially the bits we're keeping are great, the stuff that isn't we're binning anyway

Forgotten how slow they are, but nice to be back in an MX5

Depends what the rest of it is like. A standard 1000 one could cost another 1000 easy if it needs sills, arches and Front chassis rails. There are so many about its worth spending the time to get a clean one, if there are extra bits to compensate for the costs and the price is right of course. My silver thing came knowing the sills needed doing at some point, but the price very much reflected it...

Having looked at the original pictures there's obviously a chip in the front bumper but if it's a 900 car, surely the buyer should be expecting some blemishes so why the seller felt the need to cover it with this God only knows

Having looked at the original pictures there's obviously a chip in the front bumper but if it's a 900 car, surely the buyer should be expecting some blemishes so why the seller felt the need to cover it with this God only knows

Other than that, I quite enjoyed my journey home in the sunshine. Cruised at 85mph with the wind in my hair.......

I finally got the car up on the ramp on Friday and it's all good

The sills and wings are almost totally rust free and even the front chassis legs are in decent condition - a little surface rust but nothing that can't be wire brushed and painted when the engine is out

I have started to collect various items - chassis braces, chassis rails, steering wheel, braided hoses etc.
I need to sort brakes and suspension plus I haven't decided on roll cage yet - proper half cage or a TR Lane bar arrangement?? - but I'll get as many of the fiddly bits done this summer before the car goes to Nick for the engine conversion in the autumn.

The final issue is the age old question of seats...... I don't fit in standard width buckets so could do with a Fatboy seat but they don't fit However, it strikes me that it's actually the shoulder supports/wings that cause the issue? As it's a Clubsport spec I don't really want a Tillet type seat - some form of padding would be preferable! - but I'm wondering what the options are.

Has anyone seen/experienced a padded Kirkey seat, either in an MX5 or any car come to that?

Kirkey seats always make me think the owner dresses in a spacesuit or thinks their car is an F-14 Tomcat I'd be tempted to shout, "Engine one is out! Engine two is out! Mav's in trouble, he's in a Flat Spin! Eject! Eject! Eject!"

Sorry, got sidetracked there. Aren't Elise seats a popular MX-5 mod?

they do look a bit Nascar/hillbilly

Yes Elise seats are possibly the way to go but aren't they hideously expensive - like more than I paid for the car?!

A friend of mine had Kirky seats in his track car, they were bizarrely comfy. Quite restrictive, so over the shoulder checks etc are very difficult... Although I see they do some like the intermediate road/race seat.
