    A fresh Scratchmaster start .

Well after two and a half years sharing a unit the time has come to set up on my own. I started Scratchmaster in 2009 with a old combo van and built up a mobile smart repair business. Nov 2012 moved into a shabby old unit and stopped the mobile side of the business. Picked the keys up yesterday for my new unit a couple of doors down from the old unit. Put the new sign up today and have started to get things sorted for the move. Small issue is a lack of concreat floor but thats getting put down asap. Im looking forward to sorting the unit and cracking on this year.

That must be the fastest 12 months ever. Had my best year by miles and hope it continues. Small set back on Boxing Day with the flood but I had planned for it and it only took 5 days to sort out. Didn't damage anything so happy days . The plan this year is to put the office back upstairs and make more room in the unit as space is tight.

    Top work.

I'm interested in knowing what you reckon it would cost for a full respray on my Elise (feel free to PM!) Would also need some fiberglass bodywork too if I'm going to bother :)

A full re paint will start at 1200 and go up subject to type of colour ie super mica or candy 3 stage . 3 stage would be closer to 2k or more.

Stan, my time in the Forces will be up in 4 years time and one of the things I keep coming back to is the Smart Repair business. What are your thoughts on ChipsAway. My thoughts are that after I pay my money to join them and the franchise fee I have a big helpful umbrella over me, with regards to a bit of corporate protection and job security.
I need to go and attend some job fairs and the like to get a feel for it but as I said its what i keep coming back to.
Your story has inspired me even more so.

I started scratch master after losing my job and not being able to find a new one . I bought a small c15 van with some basic kit. Paid 1k to yell.com for 12 months advertising. Got some cheap cards from vista print and charged £60 to paint a bumper corner. 12 months later I cancelled my advertising and replaced the van for a tidy combo van and had it stickerd up. This was by far the best way to advertise my company. 3 years later I was booked for 6 weeks in front most of the year. My first unit was a shit hole that wasn't ideal but cheap . The new unit is clean and dry and also cheap and I have plans to make it bigger and better. I now carry 8k paint stock and have plenty of trade accounts and connections in the trade which help lots . Both me and my family have had to go without to get it up and running. No holidays or track days for a while but Pinder lets me pax a couple of times a year which helps. I wouldn't go with a chips away franchise just set it up on your own much cheaper and keep all the brass you earn.

This. I looked in to franchising when I started my previous business (lettings agency). They all take a chunk out of gross profit, plus the start up costs, and promise the world. They don't deliver.
A friend's parents owned a lettings franchise. When they wanted to give it up due to ill health, they couldn't give it away, and the franchisor made it as difficult as possible for them.

Just do it yourself. It's actually not that difficult, just really hard work. Same as Stan, I had to forgo holidays and track days, and I worked my arse off for a number of years. I would do it again, without any hesitation.
