9 minutes to upload a 1.7GB video file. I like that speed

It helps to live less than 1km from the BT exchange...

All things considered, that's not bad. If you saw the building I'm squatting in, you wouldn't believe it. The upload speed is particularly useful...

    Not bad for 60mb Virgin

Though the new house is as far as it can be from the exchange, FTTC not yet enabled, so we'll be lucky to get 3mb!

Basic Virgin broadband. The good thing is, I get that speed at ANY time of the day, not affected by the number of users in my area.

I used to have faster, but decided it simply wasn`t worth the extra ££. What I have now is plenty. I`m always waiting for Northloop to update as it is, a faster connection wouldn`t help

Rang Virgin last night and asked why I wasn`t on the 30Mb a new customer would get. After a few minutes negotiation, he said they`d up me to 30 for no extra cost.

Decided to push it, mentioned how long I`d been a customer etc, negotiated some more and now we`re on the 60Mb broadband for no price increase

The speed increase when downloading large files or uploading videos / photos is certainly noticeable. General web browsing is no different.

It's often capped. Not entirely sure why it's such a common practice, they don't do it here in Russia.

Could be much quicker, as other ISP`s show, but they probably throttle it to save bandwodth. For most people 99% of the time, its fine as it is.

    ours is depressing :

No Virgin in our area, no infinity due for another two years, and Sky is (apparently) slower still.

We have our own fibre cable which has a 1000Mb bandwidth but it is partitioned so some students pay for a 100Mb upgrade but the rest if us it's capped at 20Mb. Plenty really, but I wonder if you had your own fibre and one computer whether you'd have 1000Mb?? (Not that any servers could provide you with anything that speed)

We don't have any cable in this county (too posh to dig up the roads, apparently) so FTTC is our best bet. And even that was only enabled during 2014!

As of yesterday, this. For the last ten years, at best it was 5mbps.

we pay for Virgin 152mb at home, and when connected direct to the router via a CAT 6 cable, we get 160+ typically! Through a powerline connection to the far end of the house we get around 90mb/s on the download still.

    It's quite fast!

Do you watch porn a lot faster at those speeds, or do movies only take 45 minutes?

I only ask, cos at our house, we have to set films to download overnight. Got to smile.

Nah, they still move at the same speed, but you can get a few vids on the go at the same time if you have dual screens

Typical movie takes about 30s to download if it's coming from a good source!

the modem kicks out 2 types of connection

    2G & 5G

2G - being slower and any device can find it

5G - being the rapid speed and only new devices like my Ipad, Iphone 5s etc can find it.

My old Iphone 4s could only get the 2G service in my house and virgin say its because my modem is that old it cant connect / find it apparently.

FTTC turned out well for us, when BT finally bothered to put it in:

In my experience anything over 20Mb you're held up by backhaul and/or servers, except for streaming and uploading videos, which is much betterer.
