I think there is an element of mis-selling, in as much as it's not properly explained how it works except in small print.

I know that my broadband speeds are gonna jump once BT get around to upgrading the exchange, but I'm not belly aching as I know I'm on an 8meg exchange, not a 20meg one.

Plus when you're living out in the sticks, and the signal has to pass down 4 miles of copper cable and you're barely getting a meg, what do you expect? The phone company to put in an exchange just for you?

It's physics. You can't stop a signal degrading over distance.

I'm sure some of the cheaper/free carriers have massive contention ratios - i.e. instead of BT sharing 10meg between 20 customers, Cheapo ISP shares the same amongst 100 customers to save money. Not bad at 2am, but bad at 7pm when everyone wants to be online.

My Dad is on Virgin, and he gets 17 meg down, 10 up, which is just the advantage of fibre. Not jealous. Not at all.

One other thing, if you get a 100meg connection then you're basically going to be one of the faster links in the chain. Get stuck on a slow server or content network and it won't make much difference. Great for getting stuff from the big servers though! Again, not jealous. (Where's the boomy smiley gone?)

Just thought I'd see what it's like over wireless N:

Just had a browse on my ISP forum and they are talking about a new trial to 300Mbps. I don't really see the point at the moment

I have line rental and calls built into the ISP deal but like most, we use our mobiles for almost every call. I wonder when we'll drop the land line - it can't be that long until we do.

A bit of a peculiar mis-match between download and upload speeds. Previously, they were the same.

Faster than 73% of France, which is nice, as I'm not in France. Our Internet server is, though.

Mine's been really slow the last few days, only just over 1Mbps on what supposed to be 'up to 8Mbps'. They're upgrading me to 20Mbps at some point in the next week or two (apparently) so maybe it's something to do with that.

    Annoying, though.

On the cheapest Virgin Media connection (office), looks like it is 10mb now so about right.

I would never consider any other ISP tbh, everybody using an old phone line as a broadband connection seems to get widely varying speeds and never near the promised figure.

Spoken to half of india, all lovely polite people who work for talktalk. And one scouse bint for BT who was a total bloody tosser

Before I upgraded I was getting about 3mbps. Definitely worth the expense.
