View Full Version : Northloop at Castle Combe

I've always wandered what it would be like to do a show with Northloop and see what the interest would be like. Well today we did one

Not the biggest, but the Castle Combe action days are always well represented by both car clubs and paying visitors. With over 125 clubs there today it was a busy one.

I have been in contact with Maria from Combe for a while and as promised she did us proud with the northloop stand location.

Jim and I went down last night to take the bulk of the gear. It's suprising how much stuff you need to do this sort of thing and thanks to Jim we had a Mondeo full to the rafters with give aways from Performance Tuner to help us along :thumb:

Anyway onto the day.

4.30am and I was awake thinking of all the stuff I had undoubtably forgotten. 5.45am and I was out the door (in the rain :( ) to go to Jims and pick the beemer up.
6.15am and Jim in the MX5 and I were on our way. It was my first drive in the beemer in the rain let alone on R888's I was a little apprehensive. I needn't have worried they worked just fine ( No standing water Darren  )

7.15am and we rolled into Combe. Jim and I pulled into our spot and were intrigued by the huge number of Subarus parked facing the mondeo in squadron order. It transpired they were the SIDC (who both Jim and I have had interesting dealings with in the past  ) and we left the Mondeo in their area the night before  A couple of words were past, they got on with sorting their gear out while we went for a fry up

The others started arriving, Floyd showed an interesting like for sauce ( I will let someone else post the picture )

Out in the drizzle we got the cars set up. Getting 14 cars into a reasonable order was not easy but we managed it. Then it was up with the Banners and we were ready

The rain stopped and things started to brighten up. The R888's were looking like a good choice

Herr Cooper was ready for anything

Floyd was on the phone to the bookies discussing odds on who would go off first on the Northloop track time ;)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v501/tvr400/Castle%20Combe/IMG_5496.jpg

At around 12.30pm the heavens opened and down came the rain :o Herr Cooper failed the noise test which was a real shame :(
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v501/tvr400/Castle%20Combe/IMG_5494.jpg

We gave away several hundred Performance Tuner mags, along with Northloop and ringweekend flyers

Jim had the man on the tannoy mentioning us every 30 minutes

He got the building opposite opened so we could take a couple of pictures

Tony was sporting an identicle jumper to the one Jim bought last week :o

Gareth and Jimmy turned up to remind me in no uncertain terms that if I crashed the beemer in the wet on R888's they would kill me. No pressure then

1.15pm came and it was our turn to go out in heavy rain. Exiting the pit lane I applied some right foot and the rear wheels lit up with the car slithering down the road hmmmmmmm

Within half a lap of following Floyd and GVK I realised we were going nowhere. We were right at the back of the queue on track and it was too dangerous to consider overtaking manovoures. I started to get the hump and backed off a bit to get some clear air. When I caught back I thought It was going to be a waste of time but we maanged to move our way through the other cars. The red lights came on one of those Blue awd things had gone off meaning a Le Mon style starting grid by the pits. I had tucked in behind Floyd and GVK.
When the flag went down we were off and running. Out dragging a couple of cars into Avon rise we had clear track other than Joe8v ( I think) who was doing a good job in the Civic and Herr Teflon. Darren then proceeded to drive away from all of us in the mighty Mi   Good driving that man :thumb: I hung in with Floyd and GVK and we had some good fun laps :thumb:
The BMW was a bit of a handful and it demands real respect in the wet. However once again it did me proud ( driver training needed for me though :shame: )
At the end we were mostly bouyant about the whole thing. Not ideal, awful weather but for 25 we had good fun. Well I certainly did :thumb:

Oh and Steph went off. Did I not mention that earlier

Back in the car park people started fading and going home. By 4pm Jim and I were on our way too.

All that remains is for me to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who gave up their time to support Northloop in awful conditions today. It really was massively appreciated :thumb:

Right, now come on people get those pics and vids up

I was really worried when they stopped your session & then the safety car, ambulance, fire & rescue trucks all went racing past with lights & sirens blazing

I hope they're ok

Hello Peeps!

It was great to meet everyone yesterday, and put faces to names.

I was really taken aback that Tony looks nothing like Basil Fawlty - completely threw me when introduced...

Shame it was such a miserable day, and that our "exclusive" track session contained so many others...

What pills was Teflon on? I want some - he was really flying!

Der Faffmeister was quite philosophical about failing the noise test - he got his money back and was able to pax in a nice warm dry 309! Plus he's had a load of instruction there, so was able to show me the wet lines.

I was so glad to get home and into a long hot bath though!

Good report GK

respect needed indeed, I learnt the hard way this year, with one spin and an armco touch, although when you get it right sliding through AF is great. My LSD went on last week, its still in teh garage so I've not had a chance to have a drive yet, but I'm hoping it goes along way to making it a bit easier to drive when its wet. I've tried my hand at drifting, But theres still some bits of the NS when its wet and you dont expect it, that put the fear of god in me

Best drive of the weekend was on Sunday, across Salisbury Plain ;)

HMG Mondeo (full of angle iron) v Kinghorn Rover (playing Boney M on the stereo)

Not altogether sensible, half the contents of the car ended up in the front with me, but bloody good fun :thumb:

Tony you look nothing like Chegwin - he lives round the corner from me and I see him on a regular basis - not that I want to - it is a small village :-( he is always blasting round the lanes in some big 4X4 with the reg FCK 1W or something - complete T****r

Maggie Philbin lives a few miles away - she came to the school where I am a Governor to give the prizes to our pupils - she is now a DJ on BBC Radio Berkshire - still quite attractive in a "mature" sort of way
