I wasnt going to post as many photos of the trip over, but as it turned out, the trip was a bit of a let down, so I need to pad out my report :D

Started well enough, Louise called home at lunchtime and dropped me off at the local train station.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/793e495e.jpg

Train was on time :thumb:
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/9871f655.jpg

Short ride to Wakefield
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/2c55ddc5.jpg

Bought a coffee and waited for Bournemouth train (calling @ Derby)
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/7afa1347.jpg

This was a faster train :)
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/ac2f8003.jpg

Arrived in Derby 1 hour later
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/fd9b0ecb.jpg

Walked outside to find Ian Howell had driven over to take me to the Airport. Cheers Ian, it was appreciated :thumb: (otherwise I`d have gone on the airport transfer bus)
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/ea9e2d63.jpg

A 30 minute driver later, we arrived at East Midlands :thumb:
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/0f11e82b.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/3e3ff541.jpg

I had an hour to kill and as I had been organsied, I`d checked in online, so no need to queue to check in my hand luggage. I checked it was small enough to take onto the plane.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/919b43b6.jpg

Dave and Steven arrived an hour later
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/28dd1e13.jpg

Everything was going well, went to security, woman asked me "do you have any liquids ?" ah, that Single Malt whisky I bought for Manfred will be liquid then :shame:

Went back and queued to check in my hand luggage as hold luggage. Stupid mistake, I never even thought of it. Had to get a boarding pass like everyone else :(
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/377f482e.jpg

Went through security with just my passport, boarding pass and wallet, seemed strange I was sure I`d forgotten something... Arrived to see Steven enjoying his first pint, looking after one of Daves brake disks...
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/3a320f9f.jpg

Oh go, on, have another...
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/f347a79d.jpg

Our plane awaited, that was on time too :)
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/9b85398c.jpg

We were asked to move and site next to the emergency exit for take off, the plane was not full so we could move around after.

Dave sat to watch an episode of Desperate Housewives, Steven and I sat apart and tried to get a little sleep.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/db633348.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/9ef8df45.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/48d510dc.jpg

1 hour 5 minutes in the air and we`d arrived :thumb:
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/5d94cbc8.jpg

Next job was to get my luggage whilst Dave and Steven sorted out the hire car. Waited for my bag on the Carussel, it didnt take long.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/58586b1a.jpg

Walked to the hire car section, asked the friendly lady where the cars were, after explaining my friends had already sorted the car and I was meeting them there, I started walking to the carpark, on my way I found Dave & Steven looking for the hire car desk :D . Went back to the desk, where the woman looked at me and I explained they had not actually got that far yet...
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/a02c0aea.jpg

Our chariot awaits. A 1.4 Polo with 575km on the clock..
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/93da7e9b.jpg

We managed a GPS verified 113 on the derestricted autobahn (NOTE Davetouring, TOMTOM set to DAYLIGHT scheme )
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/a627972d.jpg

50 minutes later, we arrived at the Burgstube. Sat down for a pint and relax
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/75543f2d.jpg

Dave was impressed with the large beer glasses
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/fdcacdc2.jpg

Martin had stayed behind to sort us out.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/50c32533.jpg

We hadnt eaten since lunchtime, the kitchen was closed but Martin warmed up some rolls and brought out some cheese and meet, made 2 sandwiches each and they were BEAUTIFUL :) Thanks Martin :thumb:
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/8a166008.jpg

Johannes was staying there too, so he joined us for a beer
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/48d101d2.jpg

The room was a triple, so no sharing beds :)

Waited until it was pitch black, then took this with the flash..
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/10c82a82.jpg

Dave didnt move..
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/86771f9a.jpg

As usual I woke early after a poor nights sleep. I`m always the same when I go to the ring :P
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/65014b29.jpg

Dave got up at 7am, we were going to collect the golf from storage, empty out all the camping gear, have breakfast and be ready for when the ring opened. Opened the door and were met with this view.. :(
FOG !
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/7a6a8763.jpg

Didnt think much about it, it usually clears so were were not too worried....

Returned and had a great breakfast, ready for a days driving.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/4f9ccb0f.jpg

Mr Teflon arrived to say Hi.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/3cb60815.jpg

Wandered to the carpark, was still foggy and not open, you can see the fog in the background.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/82d29546.jpg

Had a chat with Steve Walker and wife, also a few English guys who`d driven over last night, ready for today. It was their first ever trip and they were returning that evening.....

After an hour, we realised it wasnt going to open soon, so I went back to the burgstube. I`d noticed a headlight wasnt working, wiring fault somewhere, so I ran a temporary feed to give me 2 lights, I`ll do it neater when I return home
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/cc8fd4fa.jpg

I spotted Dales Handywork, I dont think Dave saw it  (until now)
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/713e4e1f.jpg

Dave did some modification to the Porsche.. Steven spent time with his best friend. The guy ALWAYS seems to be txt`ing !
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/5b4a9a85.jpg

We all made us of the Burgstubes FREE laptop with broadband connection :thumb:
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/61de4da4.jpg

Johannes used their wifi and his own laptop
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/501e01d5.jpg

Dave tried to get his blackberry to use the wifi to connect to the internet, but failed.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/11b4b2e1.jpg

Met up with Kenmg and had a talk, he is hoping to move out to Germany and was pretty excited about it :)

This is how foggy it was. Out of the ring carpark, up hill, just past the Ringhaus, instead of following the road to the left towards Nurburg, bear right (towards the Burgstube & Castle), stop after 50 yards, park up and take photo.. See the Forsthaus in the background? Me neither...
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/2848ff51.jpg

Decided nothing was happening anytime soon so drove into Adenau for lunch. IT WAS CLEAR
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/1c81cc16.jpg

Had the usual Currywurst mit Pommes
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/2889db16.jpg

Decided to go to view at Adenaur Forst, Karl had previously told Dave about another route that may be open, it was, although it was somewhat muddy....

Arrived to find a group of Germans set for the day, large fire, BBQ and lots of beers, just no cars to watch :(
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/4d925580.jpg

Watched the ring taxi and Viper go round for 30 mins or so...
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/7195942d.jpg

The new fencing `hinders` photography somewhat... I`ll start another thread about that later...

Nature calls
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/796a2677.jpg

Called in for a chat with Claire and Karl. Had a talk about the house and caught up, as we wont be seeing them for another 5 months... :(
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/480133d2.jpg

Karl then went to the Comfy Corner, I went with him to have a chat with Jorg :thumb:
Went to the ring to see if there was any news, this says it all... I think the translation is "the ring will not be open until 17:15 Thursday", this was taken mid afternoon Wednesday :(
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/621d490b.jpg

Returned to the Burgstube, Dave and Steven were on their 2nd beer by now. Had a talk then they set off to drop off the Porsche and go to the airport for more beers..

I put the road tyres back on the Golf.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/d2a5c08a.jpg

Loaded up all the camping gear so I was ready to go in the morning
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/63b47583.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/174f47d4.jpg

Gave Jochen a call to see if he fancied a meal, he did, so we went to Pinocchios for the usual huge pizza.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/80952118.jpg

I drove a lap of the ring :) , only on the Playstation though :(
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/8984d639.jpg

Had a go on Colin Mcrae Rally on Jochens PC, I kept crashing, lots...

Back at the Burgstube, Andy Carlise and I were discussing the new fences and lines on the ring...
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/5280c7c1.jpg

Called it a night and went to bed around 11 ish.

View next morning? still foggy... although not as bad as yesterday
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/ac420d19.jpg

Had breakfast, Martin and Heidi were cheerful as always :thumb:
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/e4a36b97.jpg

Left the Burgstube at about 08:15, called in Adenau for some bits from the REWE.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/d7436c5a.jpg

It was still foggy driving out towards Althenahr
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/c2979bb2.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/684e2dd7.jpg

Went my now usual route via Antwerp
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/fc5bc183.jpg

Does this mean Leavingeasy cant go this route?
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/458df1c1.jpg

Had a great drive, non stop to Dunkerque. Called at the BP garage to fill up.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/f3715995.jpg

Arrived at the ferry terminal in 4hrs, not speeding particularly, just non stop without delays
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/0e8a63a8.jpg

Explained to woman on check-in that my car was LOW and I ground out on the ramps. She finally understood, got on the walkie talkie and explained to the loading staff that I should go DOWNSTAIRS. Boarded and was told to go UPSTAIRS. Stopped. Explained that I would hit the slope and wanted to go downstairs, drive slowly was the reply.
 After trying in vain to convince him to let me stay on the lower deck, I was sent upstairs, guess what, the spoiler hit the ramp   . NOT happy.. Snotty letter on its way to Norfolkline.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/e73a3f72.jpg

Welcome back to England...
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/0bd446d4.jpg

Uneventful drive home, stopped once for a coffee but no major holdups, just slow in places. I went via the A1 as the signs said the M1 was closed between J16 and 18..

Arrived home 5hours after leaving the ferry.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/october%20trip/38d98536.jpg

House in darkness, Catherine had gone to a school open evening for the High school. Matthew had moved our `emergency hidden key` earlier in the week, so I had an hours sleep in the Golf while I waited for them all to return :)

nige the trick is to put the hazards on when you board and refuse to go upstairs....I told the loading moron he can pay for a next exhaust and spolier then if he fancies the jobs worth!!?? seemed to do the trick!!

If anyone remembers, Mav posted a few months ago saying that unless you warned them at time of booking that your car was to low they would shove you upstairs.

Looks like they are true to their word.

Nige, excellent report considering you did not get a lap in :thumb:

I insisted to the guy that i wanted to go downstairs as the car would ground going up the ramp. I even had "Low car" written on the thing you have on the mirror after the guy at the desk said it was fine to go downstairs. Its always on the return leg i seem to have the problem.

Maybe i need to be more persuasive!

:D

Edit: was also booked as a low car Simon :(

be forceful and stand your ground as they won't send you back!

plus the people at the check in do not talk to the loaders and even the HQ so stand your ground.

otherwise it takes an age to get out too!!

It was on the timer  I know what you mean though..

I told them at time of booking, as Mav said, then at check-in then when loading, he would not budge. He was English too, so understood exactly what I meant.

It happens everytime, I`m in the process of drafting a letter anyway.

If that is the case then P&O from now on, Nige. I decided earlier in the year to avoid NL as the few quid you save is lost in the hassle of loading / unloading and the Dover - Calais route is quicker because of this.

Gary feels the same as does Darren iirc.

Nige
05-10-2007, 09:43 AM
This was my LAST trip with Norfolkline. Every time its hassle, it took us FIFTEEN minutes to leave the ferry, P&O or Seafrance are much slicker. I hate the fact that you can be there very early and one of the first on, but the unloaders seem to let people off in random order and you can be last off

Then there is that long, slow drive from the ferry to the motorway in Dunkerque, thats takes ages too.

In my opinion, it just isnt worth the small saving you make.

Wheres the Burgstube? Never heard of it before....

Weird the problems you're all having with Norfolkline, last time I went (granted it was over a year ago) I just said my car won't make it up the ramp and the guy just let me park on the lower deck, although my car was very very low. Maybe they've changed there policy or something?

Pic's make me miss it too, I'd spend a weekend there quite happily without my car, although knowing my luck the track would be empty!
