Hi folks. NigeP read my report on another forum and asked me to post it up on here, so I hope you enjoy it:

Well, we're all back in one piece, and we all managed to drive home under our own steam, which is a relief.

The trip had a few dodgy bits, mainly with the reliability of the Impreza with us - at one point having a total brake failure on the nurburgring. More on that later.

Anyway, the trip started with myself and Martin - the VR6 owner - leaving Aberdeen to meet Ali - the Impreza owner - down the road in Dundee. Then to pick up Stuart, Ali's passenger. We left Aberdeen about 09.30, as our check in was in Newcastle at 16.30, so we left a bit of time for any traffic jams etc.

Just before we left:

This raised a few smiles over there:

The trip down to Newcastle was pretty uneventful, just the usual convoy actions.

Piss stop:

Ferry queue:

Ferry landed in IJmuiden, near Amsterdam. About a 4 hour drive to the 'ring ensued, some of which was done on the derestricted Autobahn. :-D Had the car up to about 145, very easily, but the road was quite busy, so didn't want to push it too much. Got flashed out the way by a 335D BMW. It was pretty damn quick!!

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a25/g-wagon/IMGP7109.jpg

Only had a few stops on the way over, as we were all excited and just wanted to get there.

I can't say we had the most economical trip over:

The weather we were confronted with ;-) :

Finally got to our hotel:

Have you ever had a room with such a unique view? Adenau bridge, quite a technically difficult part of the course. Steep in, and hugely steep back up and out of it! We woke to the noise of tyre screeching and engines revving with new cars being tested. Fantastic!

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a25/g-wagon/IMGP7117.jpg

Having not seen many videos of the track before, I was in for a hell of a shock seeing that part of the course over Adenau Bridge. I couldn't believe how steep the track was. Excitement soon turned to fear when I saw that for the first time! lol.

Thursday was an evening session, so we made our way over to get some tickets and have a quick browse before going out.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a25/g-wagon/car%20park/IMGP7118.jpg

At this point, I was fairly nervous about doing a lap. I really didn't know what to expect. I got speaking to a driving instructor, Eddie, who rents out Alfas, and he kindly offered to take my Volvo out to show me the track and some of the dodgy parts, lines etc. That was a huge relief, and was a great way of seeing what my car is really capable of. He was a bloody good driver, and made going fast look effortless.
Martin came with me, and we then got strapped into his car for a lap:

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a25/g-wagon/IMGP7121.jpg

Didnt take too many photos, as I was just enjoying myself going out on the track. This evening Martin and I did a lap each in each otherís cars, and then swapped. It's surprising how much more confident you feel haing someone in the car. Especially on your first few laps, as this helps with the lookout for fast as hell bikers as you get to learn the track more.

The weather was great, too. This was a shot as we just left after the first time on the ring, all with a bloody huge smile on our faces. You couldn't ask for a better way to spend and evening.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a25/g-wagon/IMGP7224.jpg

That was Thursday out the way. Out for a pizza in the evening, then early to bed. We were all knackered!

Friday was an afternoon session opening at 2 until 7.30, but new cars being tested on the track rudely awaked us. I guess a new Lambo isn't the worst way to get woken up though:

Track in the morning sun:

Found these in the hotel car park:

On the night before, Ali had heard some strange knocking. He took it to a local garage to have the CV checked. It wasn't looking good - the CV gaiter had split again - Ali had made a bodge repair - and we weren't sure how long the repair job was going to hold. The mechanic had it booked in for Saturday, but the CV joint didnít make any noise whilst lapping on Thursday, so he hoped for the best.

Being the Nurburgring, the local garage would have to have this sort of stuff in there:

Someone came out and started taking pictures of us, so we presumed security must be tight round there.

After that, we heard some major loud noise coming from the GP circuit. Being nosey buggers, we wondered what the hell it was.

We parked up in the grand prix car park, and had a wonder about:

It certainly was faster than me. 560bhp made sure of it:

Anyway, we finally found some people who had passes etc, so we asked if we could walk in to the main bit. "No problem" was the reply. Don't mind if I do then...

It appeared there were some single seaters going round. They didnít look hugely quick though, and it turned out they only had Clio 197 engines in them. Still, they made some racket.

Didn't take too many photos as we weren't that close. That's the Nordschliefe in the background twisting round.

Then, a standard looking 3 series beemers came in, but fully caged up, and the guy came out with race suit on. It turned out he was a continental tyre tester. We had seen him giving it beans round the track earlier. I think it's just fantastic how they go and fill up fuel themselves, in a public filling station.

We had a bit of time before the track opened at 2, so we headed back to Adenau Bridge to spectate for a while. There was a V10 S6 going round, it was massively quick, and was power sliding round the bridge. Brilliant to watch:

The exit of the corner is very steep. Third gear can get bogged down if you don't carry the correct amount of speed into it, which can then lead to you over doing it. That is also the half way entrance where the "7 second ring master" crashed his BMW.

We then made our way back to the track. The car park was filling up, and there was some fairly tasty machinery to be seen:

This was a chap called Steven who had come over in his TVR. Very nice chap, but I think he was in the same boat as I was on the Thursday. He was a little bit nervous about going out, so I took him out in my car to show him the track. It's amazing what you learn in 10 laps. He was very appreciative of this, just as I was the day before, and promised me a passenger lap in the TVR. He then followed me out a few times to try and learn the track and all the lines. It was great fun trying to keep a TVR off my tail, and I was succeeding quite well, but he was new to the track, so he was getting faster and faster each lap. I had to work quite hard.

Friday was a very good day, but has a few crashes. One that really brought the dangers home was a lap I did on my own, I came over a crest to find a BMW upside down, facing me up the hill. It wasn't being flagged very well, but there were loads of people at the scene, so I drove on. Apparently a French driver got lift off over steer, hit the curb, rolled over the Armco, wiped out a fence, hit and tree then bounced back on the track, rolled a few times then came to a halt in the middle of the track. Thankfully he managed to get himself and his girlfriend out of the car with no injuries. Expensive crash though, we reckon all in he lost about EUR 20,000 from it. Not good.

Hereís the outcome:

## crash pic removed ##

Still got some excellent laps in, and I was really starting the learn the track.

Unfortunately for Ali, the Impreza owner, he had a bit of a scary last lap on Friday. We set off together with Steven in the TVR behind me, but he is a very good driver, and the scoob handles brilliantly, so he soon lost us. I got onto the back straight to find him limping along at about 40 mph. Thankfully Steven and I were the last out, so he had only us behind him. I slowed to make sure he was ok, and he waved us on, so Steven and I enjoyed the rest of our last lap of the day.

He went over the curb cornering hard, then on one of the corners just before Adenau bridge (maybe t-13, Iím not sure), he slammed the brakes on and the pedal went straight to the floor. Thankfully he managed to slow himself with the handbrake, but it wasnít really enough. He just went for the corner, and luckily the scoobs 4WD saved him big time here.

On the hard cornering, the Anti roll bar had a bolt sticking out of it, and this slashed his brake pipe, leaving him with no brake pressure. This was the garages fault in Britain since they put the pipe too low. They're bound to be getting a speaking to now he is home.

He dropped a few drops of brake fluid, but since it was the last lap, and only me and Steven were behind him, it would dry by the morning, so that was fine.
He limped back to the hotel, using handbrake and 1st and 2nd gear.

We them went out to the Pistenclause for tea. One that Ben Lovejoy raves about. I can see why!

Fillet steak on the hot plate:

Had a few beers there then got a taxi home. That rounded off Friday very nicely.

Saturday was an evening session only, so we had a good amount of time to hang about during the day.

Myself and Martin went on a mission to find a bank. Contrary to what Mr Lovejoy says, we couldn't find a cash machine near the manufactures road down from the grand prix entrance.

Not to worry, we did come across this - an Audi RS4 owners club. Some fair beasts here, and seeing as the RS4 and RS6 is one of my favourite cars, not finding a bank didn't worry me too much:

6) There was some racing on the Saturday too, so we met up again and went to some spectator points. I think the corner is called Brunchen. It was a 15 lap race.

Anyway, there was a whole load of different cars racing, ranging from escorts to Porsche cup cars. This is due to there being different classes, but they race at the same time. Led to some interesting photos.

After the racing, we went to the track for the opening time of 5.30. Unfortunately the racing earlier had taken it;s toll, and their was a fair mess to clean up.

This was silly quick. Overtook on the outside of a tight bend. I felt as though I was going backwards.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a25/g-wagon/car%20park/IMGP7378.jpg

The track finally opened, and I managed to get one lap. I went round a corner and found a few bikes on the track, and one guy at the side holdig his leg, looking to be in a lot of pain. Aagin, it wsnlt being flaggged that well, but people were running down the hill to start flagging, and loads of people were there to help, so I carried on. Word has it the bikers leg bone was poking through his boot. Oucha bugga!

Seeing these really does slow you down though.
I saw a few bikers down, and I'm just glad I didn't have to get out and help. I'm not much use with First Aid.

Anyway, a pretty rubbish lap that one, full of maniac bikers and faster cars, meaning I had little time to enjoy myself.

Went to the Pistenclause again for tea, and basically died from eating too much.

So that was the end of saturday. A pretty bad day track wise, but a brilliant day overall.

Overall, the Volvo stood up pretty well. The CV joints are knocking a bit, but apart from that, it is fine. The Koni FSD and Eibachs are good, but nowhere near stiff enough for the likes of a track. The standard brakes with Ferrodo performance pads did their job, but I now ave some severely warped discs. Ali's Impreza made it home all i one piece thankfully. His knocking turned out to be ball joint. His brakes got fixed whilst over there too, so he got some good lapping too. Martin's VR6 performed flawlessly, and it was a really good track car.

Thanks for reading.

Bring on next year's trip. :D

Here's some more 'ring side shots of us on it:

"Hey Martin"
"Hey Stuart"
"How's it going?"
"Not bad"

mk2 stig: Ali's obviously been taking tips from that sidecar that was infront of him. I think him leaning in there is helping his cornering speed. Ha ha.

No problem nige. Sorry, I didn't notice the report bit. I thought you meant to pop it in the general section.

Cheeers for moving it. :thumb:

You got plans for a return trip any time soon?

Cheers mate. That bit at Adenau bridge is pretty awesome.

No probs about the pictures being deleted, but out of interest, why do they get deleted?

No problem at all, every forum has their seperate policies.

However, I do feel as though crashes, or the wrecks after crashes should be shown publicly, so people who are new to the ring are aware of the dangers. Seeing them really brings the dangers home. But that's just my 2p. :)

I'll go double check the e-mail address and try to send it again. :thumb:

Jude: It's awesome. I can't wait to get there again!!

Cheeers Ian.

What would you like to know about the golf?

This might give you a bit more info on the engine transplant. Excuse some of the rubbish on the thread - the local website is like that. :D (Link contains language people may find offfensive. Don't read if you're offended by swear words :thumb: )

In short, Corrado 2.9 VR6 with Schrick Inlet, full polybushed, Koni coilovers, stripped out, half bolt in cage and recaro seats. 4 point harness and a huge amount of other stuff, plus a whole heap of body work; flared arcges, smoothed this and that etc.

He's got a whole load of other goodies to go on too - I think he was mentioning Schrick cams and head.

Oh also Ian, he will be uploading some videos sometime soon of some tunnel blasts, fly bys etc when he gets the chance.

It only has 1 1/2 silencer boxes on it - it is bloody loud.

Funnily, my mate uses his as a road car, even though it's fully stripped out, with harnesses.
