Tales from the campsite….

I`ll try and update this during the holiday :)

Our Journey went very well and we arrived to the campsite to find Paul & Gwen had already arrived and set up basecamp.

Food supplies were running low so after setting up the tents, we decided to go to Adenau to collect some food & alcohol. The ring was open, so it seemed sensible to drive to Adenau via the ring, coming off at Breidscheid  As the F1 seating was still being taken down, the track was diverted through the `old pits`, which i`ve never been through before. It was raining so a steady ˝ lap was driven to the supermarket.

Bought some supplies and had a quick “hello” with Karl. Another half lap back to the ring entrance, it’s the best trip to the supermarket you`ll ever go on :thumb:

Arrived back and made a Pasta carbonara.

Paul & Gwen were only here for a short time, so he had a steady lap in the wet.

Steph helped do the washing up.

Paul had bought some `high quality” !! beer, so high quality it came in plastic bottles…

Lit the campfire and Vicky said she wished we had some marshmallows to roast, within 30 seconds Louise had returned from our tent armed with skewers and marshmallows.

After a few minutes, Gwen & Louise joined in the fun too

Several beers later and Vicky went to collect something from the car.

Sitting around the campfire was great fun, so was drinking the beer…

As the night wore on, Vicky drank more and enjoyed herself…

After saying she could keep quiet for 5 minutes, she then started playing charades to stop steph talking this was a cue for steph to suggest it was time for bed.

So long as there are showers (check), a warm sleeping bag (check), and earplugs then it's fine!

29-07-2007, 05:14 PM
yeah my bed in my tent consists of 2 mats a throw and 2 quilts
to lie on then a thick duck and down quilt over the top to keep me warm

works a treat :thumb:

Busy couple of days...

I can testify that they are fine!

31-07-2007, 08:16 AM
What a fabulous few days we had. I will now pay Vicky to come on every holiday with me, what wonderful company and entertainment. If you think the campsite looks fun you should hear her on a rollercoaster :D :D

I'm sure Nige's report will reflect what a wonderful time we all had but I just wanted to add my thanks yet again to Lou and Cat, who had our tent already set up for our arrival :thumb: . Matty who is always so willing to help with anything you ask him to do. Nige for being Nige and also letting Ian drive his Golf, Steph for letting Ian drive his Golf (this made my holiday better). I'll let Ian explain :(

Simon, I finally got to go out on 3 laps, very nice. 2 in the Scooby and 1 in the Scenic, we overtook loads, great fun with Jake and Matthew but my only lap of the ring where I felt sea sick :D .

Dale in the MX5, mostly sideways and a great giggle, the most banging of my head on the ring :D

SteveW lovely smooth lap, and I like the tight seat, didn't move at all.:D

Finally everyone we spent time with Simon's family, Darren's family, Karl and family, Helen, the 2 Andys and all of the above. Less time on the ring but I think my most enjoyable holiday in Nurburg, as always the Northloopers made it such a wonderful time:affection:

31-07-2007, 08:18 AM
Nice to meet you and Ian again, Jude, and glad you got back safely :thumb:

Oh, and sorry about throwing sweetcorn at you in the pig park, the kids made me do it

31-07-2007, 08:29 AM
I can't imagine ANYONE making you do anything  Don't worry it was a brilliant day.

You definitely passed the "backside like a 12 year old boy" test Jude. It was a pleasure having somebody in the car who didn't need a shoehorn to get out of the seat when we had finished

I fully intended to update this daily, but the holiday has been so busy i`ve just not had time. I`ll post day 2 and 3 today, then try and post day 4 tomorrow. Its all several days after it happened, but you`ll hopefully get the feel of this fantastic holiday….

Day 2
A trip out to centre parks and the kids zone.

Catherine and Ewan enjoyed the slide.

Lou, Ewan, Vicky, Steph and Nige sat chatting and having a drink

Matthew challenged me to a game of air hockey, which I won 3-2 :thumb:

Mr Teflon and family arrived and the kids sat together to eat lunch.

The kids then enjoyed playing together on the rides whilst the adults sat and talked.

Afer a few hours, we went outside to the playground where the kids took it in turn to spin the roundabout as quickly as possible...

Popped into Adenauer Forst on the way back and saw Dale getting the MX5 sideways, this happened every lap !

The usual collection of golfs at the campsite

Matthew inspecting stephs golf while he did some minor work..

Louise made Spanish Chicken and rice for our evening meal.

31-07-2007, 01:21 PM
The weather was better than the previous night, so we made a fire, to do that, we had to go and do our hunter/gatherer thing.

We soon had a roaring fire and enjoyed a great evening drinking beer and talking rubbish whilst sat outside.

Unfortunately, the weather turned around 11:30pm, so we sat under the umbrellas, still drinking beer round the fire 

31-07-2007, 01:29 PM
Day 3
The Golf needed a little TLC, I wanted to change the coolant to just water instead of antifreeze / water, do an oil change and a few little bits.

Drained the coolant, refilled with water. Started the engine and ran it for a minute to circulate, drained it and then refilled with water.

Draining the Oil

Ian Howell & Jude arrived and we had to make minor repairs to the Nissan.

Lou washed the Golf for me.

The track was open so off to the ring for some lapping whilst Lou took photos at Eschbach. I manged to get in 10 laps, most were back to back or with a short wait in the carpark whilst I swapped passengers.

The track was busier than expected for a Wednesday afternoon...

Was taking Stip round for a passenger when we came across a biker down at Schwalbenschwanz, he`d spread gravel all over the corner and was still in the gravel in danger of being hit if someone lost control on his gravel, we stopped and flagged cars down until a marshall arrived shortly afterwards to cone off the area and sweep it up.

31-07-2007, 01:34 PM
I let Ian drive my Golf for a couple of Laps ! Its suprising how much you find yourself being a backseat driver when someone else is driving your car ….. To be fair, he had asked for some pointers regarding the little things I`d found out about my cars handling / braking etc.

Using his charm and charisma, Mr Teflon managed to blag his way onto the campsite to join us for a few beers. Here is Catherine with Toby and Fern who never stops smiling.

Here we all are stood round the fire drinking beer (seeing a pattern emerge yet ?? )

Darren let us listen to some of his `bangin tunez`. Including many TV theme tunes from the 80`s which we actually remembered and caused much reminiscing. Steph wore his `anti Nige` jacket. He thought the reflective stripes would cause the flash the reflect and spoil the shot….

Ian and Darren started singing along to some of his tracks…

It was time for the Teflon family to depart but we saw them again later in the week. Yet MORE beers were drunk and everyone was having a great time.

The night wore on and at 00:30, we were all very relaxed and finally called it a night at 00:50

Day 4 to follow……..

Yes, the owner of the garage lets him use the facilities when he is around as he prepares a Golf Mk 2 Gti for the VLN.

Day 4
Today was the Northloop trip to Daun. Karl took the day off work so he could grace us with his presence !
The attendees were Karl, Claire, Kim, Karin, Simon, Kayla, Jake, Matthew, Hannah, Darren, Maddy, Toby, Fern, Steve (steph), Vicky, Ewan, Ian, Jude, Nigel, Louise, Matthew & Catherine !!! As we arrived, we found the birds of prey show was just starting so we headed off there.

Everyone enjoyed watching the bird show..

Part of the display involve a bird flying over the valley then swooping back for some food, as you can see at the left of the picture, the speed it was carrying caused Karl the try and get out of the way.

The Vultures flew very close to the viewers causing them to duck.

Daren assured us that he wouldn’t become one of those fathers whose daughter could wrap them around their little finger, I think its too late and she already does…

The kids all got on really well together, here is Kim, Fern and Catherine.

Matthew, Matty & Toby.

Karl & Toby…..

02-08-2007, 10:13 AM
We all had a pleasant walk around the monkey park, obviously, the kids were looking for the monkeys with the big red bums  ..

There were several benches around the walk so you could sit in the glorious sunshine and relax, just like Toby, Maddie, Catherine & Kim did.

It was quite a long walk so Steph had to carry Ewan a lot of the way.

When Ferns legs were tired, Matty helped carry her.

There were some small rides there, this one involved you hoisting yourself to the top, then letting go and slowly freefalling down, as you can see, Kim didn’t like it too much…

Matty & Toby enjoyed it.

Meanwhile, Karl made sure the post didn’t fall over…

The next part of the trip was a slow drive through the safari park. Karl was first in the queue and as you can see, he was holding everyone up by not understanding how to use a barcode entry system. Everyone else went straight through…

The best part was the wild boar section. You could buy some sweetcorn to feed the animals. Matty and Catherine were in Judes car and realized if they threw sweetcorn behind her car, it would cause the boars to run there and block the road… They found this hilarious.

02-08-2007, 10:14 AM
Here you can see the road blocked by the boars…

This caused us to be very slow through this section and a German car following our `convoy` kept pipping their horn to speed us up and actually complained to a gamekeeper about us feeding the animals in an animal park where you are supposed to feed the animals !!! I guess they thought the idea was to drive through as quickly as possible, well, that didn’t happen 

The deer came really close to be fed too !

As the pace was so slow, I let Catherine sit on my knee and drive the car

Simon let Matthew drive too.

Darren also let Toby drive :thumb:

Afterwards, we had a go on the rodelbahn, I prefer this one to the slower one at altenahr..
It was Maddies first time and I think she really enjoyed herself on it .

As usual, it became a competition to see who could go the fastest, the first casualty was Ian.

Darren & Toby

02-08-2007, 10:15 AM
Steph and Ewan

Nigel had Matty on his knee, Matty didn’t brake but the weight of 2 people meant he should have done..the ensuing crash caused Nigel to have some wounds to show off.

Louise had a great time too.

I heard a screech and glanced over to see Jude tumbling out of her sled. I managed to get this quick snap.

Back to the track for 5 laps then quick shower and a meal in the PK.
Our first visit to the PK meant all the techies could log onto Northloop for the first time, how sad…

Steph, Ewan & Vicky

Hannah behaved really well and apart from getting too warm she had a good time.

Kayla, Matthew, Hannah, Jake and Simon with Catherine in the background.

Catherine, Matty, Fern and Toby looked very smart and Matthew introduced Toby to the PSP. Sorry Darren…

Jake with a huge Pizza

02-08-2007, 10:16 AM
Matthew with his never ending bowl of spaghetti !

Vicky experienced the `steak-on-a-stone` for the first time.

Some of Darrens jokes were funnier than others, Toby found this one particularly amusing.

Helen (hippychick) had arrived and joined us for a meal and a drink. She is a vegetarian and was surrounded by the smell, sight and sound of sizzling cow flesh…

Onto the deserts and Jude `shared` this with Helen. I`m not saying who had more than 50%....

Louise and Catherine shared dessert too…

There was a `spare` dessert so Darren volunteered to ensure it didn’t go to waste.

Matthew enjoyed his icecream

Several beers later and it was time to compare `war wounds` from the rodelbahn.

02-08-2007, 10:17 AM
Back to the campsite and it was time to go wood collecting.

Helen set up camp complete with windmill and pink candles.

Ian did a pretty good impression of the incredible hulk.

We were all pretty tired and had an early start next day so decided to call it a night..

I`ll try and post Day 5 tomorrow.....

Glad you are enjoying reading it all. It does take a long time to write and upload. :thumb:

It was the best trip I've ever had! I'd definitely camp again - didn't miss my home comforts once (especially as I had somewhere to plug in my hairdrier :D

Thanks to Lou, Jude & Catherine who helped me to set up camp in the girly corner while the boys went off & played!

I've still got the post trip blues but reading this is really cheering me up - thanks Nige :thumb:

Hi, Nige, Louise, Mattie and Catherine

Love the pictures, well maybe not the ones from the first night, but the rest are good.

Thanks for helping out with the camping bits that Stephen forgot, Men you just can't trust them to do anything properly.

Hopefully see you next time , Ewan really enjoyed spending time with Catherine and Mattie.

Ps. Hi to everyone else

03-08-2007, 09:30 AM
Day 5…
The day started with a visit to the local motor factors. On the previous evening my wheelbearing had collapsed braking for Miss-Hit-Miss, I Howell & Matty were following and initially thought my brakes had locked, but when they saw the wheel at a precarious angle, they realized it was something more serious. Stopped at the side of the track, decided to drive slowly to Breidscheid and park up. Made it to Lidl carpark when the car was abandoned overnight. Ordered a new Stub Axle & Wheel bearing.

As there was nothing else to do until the parts arrived, we went to Phantasialand.
Darren tried sneaking Tody in as a baby, but the was over the 1m height and Maddie had to go back and queue to pay for him.

The kids posed for a photo under the Michael Jackson `Thrill ride` !!!!

First ride was a rollercoaster that was actually pretty good and lasted a long time

Michaela and Hannah enjoyed the balloon ride

Whilst queuing for the `black Mamba` ride, steph couldn’t control himself…

Catherine was not too happy about going on the ride, but as I told her “we`ve queued this long so you can bloody well sit down…”

Ian, Matty & Darren wanted to go on another ride, I chickened out but took photos.

03-08-2007, 09:31 AM
Once the ride was underway, those relaxed looks changed somewhat…..

They made it safely through the experience and were all pretty pleased with themselves

Meanwhile, Helen chilled and steadfastly refused to go on any scary rides.

Lunch consisted of the usual, Bratwurst and pommes with Coke.

Steph took Ewan on a much slower ride

Whilst Vicky took Matthew on the same ride.

The ladies decided it was warm enough to have an icecream

Family Teflon after sharing a pleasant ride together

After much nagging, Helen finally relented and went on the slowest ride she could find.

The pace was too fast for some, so they sat in the sun topping up their tans.

03-08-2007, 09:32 AM
The Log flume had 2 rides, a slow and fast one, guess who went on the fast one and got wet??

Maddie took Catherine, Toby and Matty on the slower ride.

Vicky, Ewan and Steph also went on the faster / wetter ride..

Back onto the rollercoaster for more thrills.

What is it with that family and statues ?????

Second time around and Catherine enjoyed the `black mamba` and was laughing all the way round. She was very brave to go on it again but knows that after the first time, they are never as scary for her..

Vicky had screamed all the way round and could be heard around the park..

After a fabulous day, we returned to our accommodation.

I stopped to collect the parts for the golf, only to be told the stub axle wouldn’t arrive until the following morning, as it turned out, it was not an issue…. I removed the bearing cover and found the bearing had fallen apart and the only thing holding the wheel onto the car was a split pin !!!!! As I was unable to move it in this state, I had to repair it in Lidl carpark….

03-08-2007, 09:33 AM

As I had to wait until Saturday for spares, we returned to the campsite for the obligatory fire and beer.

Great fun was had by all.

Jude took great delight in showing us her photos…

We were getting the hang of a good fire by now…

Having a reflective jacket meant steph couldn’t sneak off for a pee…

As the evening wore on, the grins became bigger

03-08-2007, 09:33 AM
As usual, the girls decided to go to the toilet together, however, Louise and Jude hid outside and made Vicky and Helen jump by shouting `boo` when they came outside.

Vicky took great delight in re-enacting her surprise.

We spent more time laughing and drinking.

3 out of the 4 stopped drinking and just pretended, can you guess which ones?

Steph was feeling tired and his leg was playing up, Vicky did her best to cheer him up.

Vicky showed us the `picking up the cereal box` game.

03-08-2007, 09:34 AM
When steph fell asleep, we were going to leave him out all night, but the sensible few (not me...) prevailed and he was woken to go to bed…

It was 01:15am, the campsite attendant came round and suggested we call it a night. We decided this was a good time to call it a night after a brilliant day/evening.

Dave Malings

Great report nige, do you break things on purpose so you have something to fix???

I like the look of that cereal game, I think it derived from a game a young karl used to play during his time in the navy, when certain sailors would weld a shilling to the deck, and wait for able seaman Kesselchen to come by............

Actually it was 6 Euros.

I do have photos of a similar nature to the game you mention, but I`m not posting those here.

Do I break things on purpose ? Not bloody likely, It shook me up once I realised the wheel was held on with just the split pin !!

What a morning! Collected the new stub axle, but it did not come with the required nut and washer. Didn’t think it would be a problem, and so I just popped onto the local VW dealer. Unfortunately they only had the washer in stock, no hub nut or axle mounting bolts!! The guy was very helpful and looked on the computer to find the nearest dealer with the items in stock. Fortunately for me, it was 35 miles away in Bad Neuenahr! So I made an hour and a half round trip to buy €2.52 worth of bolts and a nut….

I thought it worth the journey as they are required to fasten the wheel to the car?! :o

After speaking with Steph, it was decided the only way I would remove the 4 stub axle mounting bolts would be with a socket, hammer, long bar and lots of heat. The trip to the hardware store in Adeneau was required to buy a blow torch.

Removal went surprisingly well after hammering on the smaller socket, then heating each hub and bolt for around 5 minutes. I was then able to loosen every one.

Whilst I was working on the car in lidl carpark,

Ian arrived in Judes Audi. He had been driving “briskly” and the front brakes were showing signs of fatigue.

I completed the repairs at around 2pm, after having lunch in the Sports bar.

A ˝ lap to the carpark went ok and a quick inspection showed no problems. I spent the rest of the afternoon lapping.

Met up with Themis, who along with several other MX5 owners had made a long journey from Greece to the ring. We had spoken by PM and it was great to actually meet up.
He took me for a pax lap and I thoroughly enjoyed it. There were a couple of corners where I noticed he was not taking the usual line, and so I took him out in the golf to show him what I meant.

Whilst at the carpark Helen arrived. I had promised her a few passenger laps, slowly gaining pace to build up her confidence. On one lap Ian was following in Stephs golf, and we had a great lap. However, 3 laps on the bounce started causing Helens ice cream to make its presence felt! After the laps, I asked Helen if it had been enjoyable, she replied “It was fabulous Nige!!!!!” B)

Matt was getting laps where possible, Cat was swimming with Claire, Kim and Karin, and Louise was out taking photos.

The car was faultless (apart from the on going rear brake issue), however on the last lap of the day the rear near side wheel bearing started rumbling. As it turned out all that was required was removal, cleaning, regreasing and refitting.

After the track closed we had a quick shower, then we all went to the apartments for the Northloop BBQ.

Everyone arrived at the apartments and started on the beers! For reason I had been nominated to cook…..

Karl was grumbling that he had done some manual work today…
It seemed to have been a shock to his system, and he was already complaining of aches and pains! I suppose when all you are used to lifting with your hand is a beer glass, a paint brush can seem quite tiring.

And then we started to eat….

The kids played on the playground at the side, and enjoyed themselves.

As the evening wore on, more beer was drunk and more food was eaten….

Steph was explaining that he had served in Bosnia, when Karl asked if he had killed a man Steph calmly replied “No, but I know men who can……!”

As the beers took effect, Vicky took on her usual role of Northloop entertainer for the night!

Steph had to pay a call of nature, Karl not wanting to miss out also went along…
I am not sure if it was just to compare!

04-08-2007, 06:31 AM
Karl brought along his dog, Sunny….
He was very grateful to certain people for the titbits he was fed!

Vicky had her nails done especially for the trip, and was showing us all…
And then she entertained us with her lovely karaoke singing….. I have a clip but would not dream of posting it without Vickys permission!

Andy was really struggling to open the wine as he is only used to beer bottles! I offered to give him some light to help, and took a photo with the flash from short range which temporarily blinded him
He had to concentrate really hard..
Thank goodness Helen helped by giving him to light from her torch..
At this point we tried to give Vicky some water and then apple juice instead of wine!
She wailed “They are trying to give me apple juice and water, I just WANT MORE WINE!”

Lots of fun and laughing as was now the norm.

A very good night was had by all! We finally went to bed at 01:45.

Day 7 to follow...

Ian arrived in Judes Audi. He had been driving “briskly” and the front brakes were showing signs of fatigue.

No fatigue... just new pads (mintex extreme) finally bedded in and working well :thumb:

Got them a little hot bringing Jude,Louise and Helen down to Adenau for half a lap for lunch at the Sports Cafe :D

Nige - it was fantastic :D thanks!

.....you didn't mention any problems with the brakes before I got in though!!!!!!

I can imagine the conversation, "Helen, you want a few laps? I`ll go slow to increase your confidence","that would be great", "OK, oh and by the way, my brakes still have issues where the rears lock if I brake too hard".... :D

After last nights late bedtime we all fancied a sleep in. With the Ring not opening until 11am it meant there was no pressing need to get up early. Steph and Vicky were returning home, and had set their alarm for 7.30am. When we arose at 9.45am, their tent was down, car loaded and they were almost ready for the off! Vicky vowed to stay off alcohol for at least a month!

The track was very wet and so after a leisurely morning we decided to do some viewing.
Before we set off I did some work on the car. I had acquired a 50mm inlet manifold. On several peoples recommendation I decided to break my no car modification rule. I fitted the new manifold and injectors at the campsite, under the gazebo, in around an hour. I also repacked the loose rear bearing I’d noticed the previous evening.

Jude was enjoying her time at the campsite.

I hadn’t been viewing at Wipermann before, and so we drove to Brunchen with Helen, and had a short walk alongside the track to take some photos.

Matt took some photos with our cannon camera. He had to make some slight modifications to his attire as we had left his kagool in Judes Audi, and also to ensure the camera did not get wet!

Even though the conditions were rather wet, we still saw some Northloopers making their way around the track!

After their lap Ian and Jude came to join us and take some photos, and have a chat.

After getting rather wet the weather then began to clear up, and we all went back to the carpark. I went back out on the track, whilst several others went to the Grune Holle for hot chocolates.

Everyone then went back out for laps, and Louise went back out to take pictures.

I was chatting in the carpark when Martin (p1doc) wandered over for a chat. He had promised me a lap on an earlier trip, but we had never been in the carpark at the same time. He took me around for a lap, and then we had a look at his car afterwards. I have a policy of not letting Matt go for a pax lap unless I have either been with the driver myself or know enough about the driver to know if it will be safe for him. A good example is Thorlief who is so slow that there is no chance of an accident….
Matt went for a lap with Martin, whilst I chatted in the carpark. He did bring my son back safely, there is a little more to it than that – but that’s Martins story!

We went up to the mini carousel to resue Lou who had locked her steering wheel and could not get the car started to get back to the campsite….

Back at the campsite we had another new camper – Andy. He had approached me in the carpark having seen my golf thread. He was camping for 1 night only, so we invited him to join us. Ian went to collect some charcoal, beer and any left overs which were not wanted from the BBQ at Herr Teflons. Due to amount of rain all our fire wood was wet, and so we all stood around the BBQ drinking beers instead.

It was an earlier night than usual due to the cold and not having a fire, and the number of late nights we had been keeping was finally starting to catch up with us.

Day 8
Ian & Jude were first up and had almost packed their tent by the time we awoke. Helen packed at a much more leisurely pace and was ready to leave around 11ish. When they had all left, it did seem pretty quiet, fortunately, Andy had stayed and it wasn’t just us.

Lou, Matty & Catherine were going swimming after lunch and Andy & I were going to go on track. We turned up at 13:15, only to find it didn’t open until 17:15…I suggested we do some viewing as Andy had only been to brunchen before. I suggested Hatzenbach, so we parked and walked up the hill. There was a Performance Days session running all day and there were some nice cars being driven very slowly. 

We wandered up towards T13, but the skies started darkening so we made a hasty retreat back to the car. I suggested going to view at Foxhole as I`d never been there either. It was pretty impressive, even in the wet !

The afternoon passed surprisingly quickly and a quick dash back to the campsite to collect Andys Elise and it was time to go to the carpark. It was packed, the huge lorries with awnings took up most of the carpark so I went straight out for a half lap, came off at Breidscheid to collect Matty from swimming. Whilst there, I spotted a message from Mr Teflons crew from the weekend…

Louise then went to view at Weirseifen, she caught most of the northloopers out on track at the time.

Simon passing a Caterham on the right….

Dale outrunning Me in his MX5

Me on track.

I offered to do a slow lap with Andy following me, he`d had a `non-impact moment` at Brunchen 2 in the wet and was struggling to get some speed again. I knew exactly how he felt so I said I`d go as slow as he wanted so he could watch my lines and see how he felt.
We set off together and I was taking it very steady, easing off when I pulled away, however as we approached Metzgesfeld, I saw some rain spots on the windscreen and thinking it could be the last lap of the day I left poor Andy and zoomed off to finish the lap. As it turned out, it stopped raining almost immediately.

I apologised to Andy and promised that next time I wouldn’t leave him. Simon asked if he could follow in the scenic and he`d passed us my Hatzenbach !. Andy followed me for an 11:50 lap and said it really helped him. I offered to take him out for a lap in the golf to explain some corners better, ie Breidscheid as one long corner, running wide then getting a straighter approach to Ex-Muhle. I was talking for nearly all of the lap, explaining when to turn in, why I short shifted sometimes to keep the car stable and generally trying to be as smooth as possible. There was a 50km/h speed limit throughout the entire Karussel and obviously that impacted on the lap time, however, I`d left Virtual Cup running and out of curiosity asked Andy to have a look as we crossed the line. Imagine my surprise when I saw it was the fastest I`d ever been in my Golf (9:30) and allowing for the roadworks, probably my fastest ever.

I must admit to being somewhat sceptical about the `concentrate on the lines & smoothness and the time will come` statement, but this was the perfect example to me which showed that by trying to be as smooth and accurate as possible, I set my fastest lap in the process.

Andy Carlisle jumped in for a lap and I actually went 4 seconds quicker !, I was chatting all the way round and was very relaxed. The track closed and we returned for a fire, food and beer.

Louise and I had discussed about letting Matty drive the Golf on the campsite, his face was a picture when I got out, and sat in the passenger seat. It took him a few starts to set off without stalling, but he did manage it and drove to the campsite with a massive grin on his face.

Lou made Honey & Mustard Chicken with real Mash potatoes for dinner and every plate was spotless at the end. It was dry enough for a fire, so once the kids were in bed we lit it, drunk some beers and enjoyed a pleasant evening.

I was enjoying the evening and started to feel drowsy, Andy asked how many members there were on Northloop and how many had I met this holiday?, I said “oh about 1500 and Zzzzzzz” I fell asleep mid sentence !. Louise and Andy looked at each other and burst out laughing, Louise tapped my leg to wake me and I said “about 20 in total this holiday” without missing a beat !. Andy couldn’t believe what had happened and asked Louise if I did it often, it’s the first time I`ve done it to my knowledge, but I can imagine it being amusing to anyone watching.

Went to bed around midnight.

Great report Nige!

I'm still on my travels currently in Switzerland tackling the mountain passes with just as much confidence as i did the ring in the wet....

Many thanks to everyone who made me so welcome at the campsite and especially to Nige and his family. Will be aiming to get back to Adenau a couple of days before the 31st which is when the rest of the lads turn up.

Cheers, Andy
