An event I'd been planning on visiting for a few years was Rally Legend, in October I finally made it.

Based in the Republic of San Marino, the event has become one of the biggest events in the classic rallying calendar.

As luck would have it, we have a customer in Northern Italy, so I was able to fit things in with a customer visit.

First stop - Verona. It was great to meet up with my Swedish friend Stefan, he had brought along some of his customers from Sweden.

Daylight, and a chance for an early morning walk round Verona.

The Arena di Verona, built in 30 AD, every reason to believe this amazing structure will still be around in another 2000 years

Nowadays the arena hosts Opera events, just a few weeks before our visit, Plácido Domingo and José Carreras played there to a capacity crowd to mark the 10th anniversary of the death of Luciano Pavarotti.

We caught Valentino Rossi doing his day job!

We are still trying to work out how Stefan managed to get the Swedish flag flying outside Verona Town Hall

After visiting our customer on Thursday, we were kindly invited to do some wine tasting, definitely one of the nicer sides to my working life, much better than being in rural China!

Thursday night, out for some Italian food, not forgetting the Grappa!

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4568/38548703066_9e11a6d9ea_b.jpg

Back at the hotel, Stefan continued to promote the merits of Italian wine!

Stefan was still recovering from a recent hip replacement, so decided to explain the advantages of the stick shift to Goran

Friday morning, before we headed for Rally Legend, we took in one of Verona's biggest tourist attractions - Romeo & Juliet's Balcony

We arrived in Rimini on Friday evening, this unusual beer was on offer, we didn't care to sample it though!

(Note: I have borrowed some of the photos in my report from Rally Legend's website etc.)

Just as Domingo and Carreras had done in Verona, this year's Rally Legend was to mark the 10th anniversary of one of rallying's biggest names, many great names had agreed to attend and pay respect to Colin McRae

Who better than Colin's protégé Kris Meeke to be running at number 1

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4520/26829424159_a5dd60c37d_b.jpg

The McRae Clan were there in force:

Hollie McRae (Colin's daughter) and Margaret McRae (Colin's mother)

Alister McRae with the man who co drove Colin to his world title in 1995, Derek Ringer

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4562/26828553999_fb0cb705ca_b.jpg

Hollie was also out in the co drivers seat

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4556/24733014678_f6474107ba_b.jpg

Another of Colin's former co drivers, Nicky Grist was out with 9 time WRC champion Sébastien Loeb

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4528/38548387486_5d73bfb6b7_b.jpg

Familiar looking car, but not the driver you are expecting...

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4517/37718209285_2f7c52f12a_b.jpg

Instead of Russell Brookes, it was former Ladies World Champion Louise Aitken-Walker at the wheel, with her daughter in the hot seat

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4562/37717297425_7dc6c68d79_b.jpg

Ari, the great man has not lost any of his fans

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4526/38548388116_0bdeed3fa2_b.jpg

Incredibly, Ari was the last driver to win a world rally championship driving a Ford, just a few weeks after this photo was taken, Sébastien Ogier would finally end that long wait

The event is based at the Olympic Stadium in San Marino, a good place to get a close up look at the cars

We went up to the nearby industrial estate to watch the cars in action

Local hero was out to entertain in this Fiat 131

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4527/26829423539_6c5400fb91_b.jpg

Stig was out in the S1, reminding us of that awesome noise that used to fill the air when Audi was top dog in rallying

A superb event, there is talk of Stefan's friend Goran running his Chevette HSR on next year's event, so who knows, there might be another trip for 2018.

Here is a film clip that will give you a flavour of this year's event:

Another outstanding report Autohabit, full of magnificent and iconic Rally machinery...
Thanks for taking the time & trouble to do it. :thumb:

I'm soo jealous by the way, I'd love to have been at the Rally Legends event.
Many of my friends from the Rally community were there -
That ex-Brookes 'Andrews' Sunbeam driven by Louise Aitken-Walker is owned by J.P. Leahy and is regularly rallied here on Irish shores by O. Murphy, an awesome bit of kit!
The Horans from Tipperary were also there, with an AudiSport Quattro & an 'Alitalia' Fiat 131 Abarth.
The list goes on...

Those photos are pure car-porn to me!

I spent a fair bit of time at the FofS with a young beneficiary of MM (Dan, a great chap) and discovered we had a shared love of rally stuff. We found ourselves 'off-roading' up the woods to the rally stage in one of those buggies they all hire at Goodwood (sshh, don't tell the Major) We watched a few 70s and 80s classics setting off and wandered about the pits. Odd how I couldn't revise to save my life at school yet here i was reeling off specs and stuff to a lad nearly young enough to be a grandson :shame:

Will you be anywhere along the LEJoG route Alan ? I'm hoping to find somewhere remote and scenic for some photo taking. :thumb:

Not that I've found. I stopped short of contacting them as I'm sure they're rather busy.

Edit....

Yes

Ribblehead Viaduct en rout from Ingleton to Hawes so presumably they go over Butter tubs for...
Tan Hill Inn

I may well spend my day sat outside at a rather nice cafe, part of the Kearton Country Hotel. Thwaite

Thanks Dave,

Believe it or not, I've never been to the Tan Hill, seems like a reasonable excuse.

A figure of 30 per cent of the Benedictine drunk in Britain is consumed in the Burnley, Accrington and Nelson area of Lancashire.

The local passion for the drink was started by soldiers in the 11th battalion of the East Lancashire Regiment during the First World War.

In the cold winter of 1918 the battalion was based in Fecamp, Normandy - where the liqueur is made - and the troops drank Bene 'n' hot to keep warm in the trenches.

Every day is a school day. I had to google Bene and Hot...and I only live 4 miles from Lancashire and 12 miles from Nelson
