View Full Version : The Alps on Bikes

4 mates and I went to the Alps.

The Alps are big hills. Bigger than the ones in Yorkshire where everything is the best. This confused us but nonetheless we rode on some smooth roads with a fair few constant radius corners. The roads aren’t as good as Yorkshire roads as they are totally devoid of character…you know; potholes, litter, dead things etc.

Here are some pictures.
The highlight of the trip was obviously getting back to Yorkshire but some of the roads that went over mountains down in Switzerland were OK although I really can’t recommend any of you go to the Alps at all, especially not to ride or drive the Furka, Grimsel and Fluela Passes. They are awful…stick to Ditchling Beacon or that Evo triangle thingy.

Satnavs are ace.

The German Hotel we stayed in just south of Baden Baden had no evening meals, so our only option was a car park picnic.

View from Apartment in Arosa. Got to it via a twisty 15 mile ride up the valley, oddly, we got back down via the same road so had to ride the darned thing 3 times up and 3 times down again.

This is a bridge…over a river. The Swiss like building bridges…and tunnels…and then tunnels connected with bridges. Bet they all played with lego as kids.

Can’t recall what this one was called. A waste of bloody tarmac I’d say, all them twists and turns. In Yorkshire we’d have made it straight and 1 in 3. A proper road.

A random Swiss biker stopped to chat. Seemed a nice feller but I reckon he had a weird cellar arrangement at home and wanted the prettiest of us. I got away lightly, the big feller on the right disappeared for 3 days and came back ‘changed’.

Same again another day. The money I save is lavished on gifts for my wife. She chooses to not use them tho. It’s not my fault she can’t ride the 2 motorbikes I bought her that sit in the garage.

Hotel in France was a bit odd, kicked us out of the deserted bar at 10 and we were asked to use the ‘facilities room’ This is where we had our PDR using SMART objectives. I was bit pee’d off as I had no clipboard so was ill-prepared to take notes. Much beer was drunk.

It was such an awful trip that I've persuaded the Mrs to drive there with me in September to show her. This is what I do for my NL friends so they can avoid going and stick to the great roads around Kent, Essex, Lincolnshire (High Six by the way)

Bikes, you said? Bikes, lad: they don't have engines. Otherwise they'd be motorbikes. Bloody Yorkshiremen. Too full of puddings.

Other than that, a reet gud read. Ta.

Irons. Crikey. Nige (a proper Yorkshireman) would push carbon fibre. Or at least fibreglass. Iron's so owd fashioned. :fishing:

Via Goodwood sadly but I have these crosses to bear. I'm soaking it all in now before heading down to Thruxton this afternoon...yet another cross and all that. :karl:

Cracking report Dave, thanks for sharing. :thumb:

I've biked most of the significant climbs in the Pyrennees (Tourmalet, Hautacam, etc...)
the Alps are next on my list (hopefully next year).

Do you reckon something like this is possible on a sports bike and a big rucksack? Or is a tourer just the best bet?

As long as the bag is strapped to the bike and not you I see no reason why not

Why a big rucksack?
Like most folk with decent sized panniers...I fill em. Half the stuff is "just in case" stuff.
Strap a smallish waterproof bag (Lomo make ace bags and they're cheap as chips) with a couple of days clothes. That's it. If you really need to buy something extra due to adverse weather...just find a Decathlon sports shop and buy it.
Bike kit most of the day every day.
Couple of changes of undies and socks th you can wash in the sink when needed.
Travel light and enjoy it more :thumb:

I was thinking rucksack as I didn't know if the bike [600rr] would take panniers. Might be a bit much on that kind of bike though!
