To coincide with my birthday, I booked a long weekend to Glasgow. I’d always bypassed it when driving North, wife wanted to re-visit having been 20+ years ago...when I’d bypassed it to go MTBing in the Highlands. I’ve always had an excuse ready...but really regret all those excuses now !
Without a shadow of a doubt the best city I’ve been to.
San Francisco, San Diego, Paris, Lisbon etc...not a patch on a grey winter weekend in wee Glasgae. Seriously.

Snowy on the way North and after a bit of a long way round we were glad to get to the cheap and cheesy travelodge for the first 2 nights. We did a ‘world buffet’ for evening meal and the lass who served us actually said ‘It’s an eat all you can buffet’. That doesn’t do it for us but she’d said it to others who’d really taken it to heart...

Saturday, Peoples Palace and then a walk into the city where I spent half an hour listening to a young ‘gerrul’ who couldn’t half sing.

One of the hundreds of fabulous buildings.

Bite to eat and the usual early night.

Sunday, a day of music...well sort of. We moved the van to our new abode for 2 nights, The Village Hotel. (Got a great post Xmas deal)
We ambled along to a Wetherspoons for breakfast.

We then wandered through ‘town’ until we ended up at the Kelvingrove Museum for about noon.

Apparently I’m a philestine as I don’t ‘get’ art. These were hanging in this wonderful building as ‘art’. They’re shite. A 5 yr old could draw them. Utter shite. (It might be just me because a couple gave me a filthy look when I exclaimed at how crappy the below two really were, wife walked off)

There was an organ recital at 3pm...i thought we’d be done and dusted by 2ish so would miss it. We managed half the museum by about 2.40 so got a coffee and cake in the cafe and sat and listened to a huge pipe organ fill the hall with sound including Toccata followed by a bit of Bowie followed by Elton John... Amazing.

We walked all of 200 yards to a local pub called the 3 Judges, lowered the average age by 15 years and had some real ale while listening to a jazz group. There were 48 people in the pub and it felt just right. Great Sunday afternoon in my book.
The Tony Bennett cross Tony Blackburn singer...he was pretty good but obviously hasn’t twigged he’s 66 not 26.

Damn that autocorrect. It ended up being a bloody Sax Shop. My birthday money will have to wait to be spent. XXX

Monday was a long walk to both the Cathedral and the Necropolis (or the big graveyard but with a posh name) and then back across town to the Botanic Gardens.

From there we walked down Byers Road which has some great little shops and back alleys.

Mexican meal for tea (It’s my report so it’s bloody tea ! It is NOT dinner! We’ve been through this a few times)

Tuesday we were up early...at 8.30, hey we’re on holiday, and after breakfast visited the Riverside museum which is great. Transport...of all types on land and water. We probably spent 4 hours there, great value for money as it was free….like all the others!

Long drive home but quite honestly the nicest weekend away I’ve ever had. Justine said the same (followed by ‘well it would have been if I’d not had you with me…’)
Dunno when we’ll get back to Glasgow but I manage two Scottish trips in May, first on the bike for a few days and then 10 days in the van with MTBs where we are doing some bothying plus a couple of nights in Aberdeen (someone has to secretly check up on the Brat!)

Nice report Dave, thanks for sharing!

I've only ever been to Scotland for work, and a pretty bad game of American football where I got my first concussion. I should really make an effort to go see some more of it, girlfriends Mum is from Shetland, she keeps suggesting we go, we probably should.

Yep, don't fly though. It may be far cheaper but you'd miss an epic drive there and back (plus a long ferry ride through rough seas.... )

I've been on that 13 hour ferry ride through a North Atlantic storm. That was fun. Everyone on the boat was sick, and you could feel and hear the superstructure creaking and shifting around you.

So, yeah, Tim should definitely do that.:thumb:

Glasgow is cool. I went to High school in Central Scotland, so weekends (and subsequent higher education) were usually a choice between Glasgow and Edinburgh. I ended up in Edinburgh, but many of my schoolmates went the other way. Weegies are some of the friendliest people on earth (albeit with a very high capacity for violence after a few drinks on a night oot).

Great report, Dave. :thumb:

I'm old enough to have visited two previous incarnations/locations of the transport museum. I'm not a big fan of sticking cars on high shelves. I think I preferred the Kelvingrove set-up.

Great write-up. we had a day in Glasgow with the kids and, combined with some shopping, we didn't have nearly anywhere near enough time. Missed the transport museum so we WILL be back. We stayed in Stirling and took the train in.

great report Dave - spend many days at the Kelvingrove as a kid - used to cycle in to it from Rutherglen. Thw Waverley is great also.

Love Glasgow - been there on various occasions. One of the most memorable was for an exhibition - I went out to see a mate for the evening, who lived nearby, after we'd set up. I drove back in to the city on the elevated motorways in a newish SUV, experiencing the wonders of cruise control, for the first time, with Air's recent release Moon Safari playing out. It had a very non-British feel to it all.... and was some time ago!
