With no time limits of leave anymore, I managed to persuade Justine that 3 weeks on the Isle of Man seeing all practice and race week of the TT was a must. She’s not a petrol head...at all.

Bags packed, bike packed and we’re off for a late morning ferry but the Steam Racket Company have you arriving at least 2 hrs early.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g205/boristhebold/20160526_100527_zpsxbcyrqj0.jpg (http://s57.photobucket.com/user/boristhebold/media/20160526_100527_zpsxbcyrqj0.jpg.html)

Safely loaded and the 2 ¾ hr journey is done with no issues at all, a lovely flat sea.
Disembarking is a bit of a free for all and most of the retarded bikers rush to get off...only to pull up in every place they can find to re-group or re-pack or whatever.
We had initially booked an apartment at a cost of about £1100 for the 19 nights we were there but then a friend of a friend offered us a room at their house...for nowt...so we jumped at it (and what a great decision too)
We’d got the text telling us where ‘our’ house keys were and rode to the house and let ourselves in. This was a weird feeling and was reminiscent of doing a warrant on an empty house in a previous life. Anyhow, we dumped our stuff and did what all bikers do...went for high tea at Marks and Spencers.
We then went to the Marshals office for me to sign on. I kept a couple of practice sessions free so that we could watch elsewhere on the course...for some reason my lovely wife thought that 2 nights off would mean a meal out or some such...not simply watching the bikes from a different place…der.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g205/boristhebold/20160525_191119_zpssymeay2e.jpg (http://s57.photobucket.com/user/boristhebold/media/20160525_191119_zpssymeay2e.jpg.html)

The couple we were stopping with duly came home, her from work, him from marshalling at the Billown Circuit where the pre TT practice had been held. He had been with a brand new marshal and had had an ‘incident’ where they marshalled that resulted in one rider dead, one critical and said first time marshal critical and about to be flown from Nobles Hospital across to Liverpool in a coma (and with somewhat smashed legs...he had been hit by the bike of a racer who had ignored waved yellow flags. I spent the late part of the Friday evening up at Nobles being a bit of a go between between medical/Police in an effort to locate and notify the guys family in the West Midlands. A bit of a baptism of fire after a few hours on the Island.
The next day we marshaled at Ballaspur, famous for the location of Milky’s crash some years ago.

Motorcycle crash footage. no blood or gore and the rider is now fine....

This shot of the boarding on the inside of the first left at Ballaspur shows how close the sidecar passengers arses get…

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g205/boristhebold/20160608_122211_zpszmmcmyuy.jpg (http://s57.photobucket.com/user/boristhebold/media/20160608_122211_zpszmmcmyuy.jpg.html)

Looking back now...the whole 2 weeks of practice and race blurs into one...but we watched lots of nutters do extraordinary things on 2, 3 and occasionally 4 wheels.

Justine signed on to marshal the next day and the 2 of us plus another mate filled in at a variety of places around Sector 3 (The course is divided into 12 sectors, each having a Chief Sector Marshal ..the guy we were stopping with was CSM for our sector) which gave us some incredible perspectives of speed/bike movement under braking/acceleration and also when they’re airborne!

Appledene Kennels, they hurtle at you at perhaps 130-140..

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g205/boristhebold/20160606_132505_zps7yzzej6y.jpg (http://s57.photobucket.com/user/boristhebold/media/20160606_132505_zps7yzzej6y.jpg.html)

And then hurtle away…

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g205/boristhebold/20160606_132510_zpsgxghuzth.jpg (http://s57.photobucket.com/user/boristhebold/media/20160606_132510_zpsgxghuzth.jpg.html)

We had a few noseys up around the pits and grandstand and watched practice there on the first Thursday. It was a bit distant...30 yards from the bikes, the real feel of the TT is sat roadside as they hurtle past a few feet or inches away..and when 2 or 3 come past at the same time there is an incredible rush of air/dust/excitement.

They take cleanliness seriously in their pit areas…

Bruce Ansteys bike, Fiona is Clive Padgetts daughter and as a small kid, she asked if she could have name on the race bike her dad provided/sponsored/prepped...it’s been on his bikes ever since.

Bruce himself...sans that stupid bloody beard (its the only pic of any of the riders as I hate the whole ‘celeb’ photo autograph thing)

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g205/boristhebold/20160605_175808_zpsqwsp4118.jpg (http://s57.photobucket.com/user/boristhebold/media/20160605_175808_zpsqwsp4118.jpg.html)

Hard to get in a camera photo but the arrow points to the left most track of one of the bikes travelling at perhaps 140-160mph...how they missed that pole I’ll never know.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g205/boristhebold/20160606_162119_zpsuez2w79d.jpg (http://s57.photobucket.com/user/boristhebold/media/20160606_162119_zpsuez2w79d.jpg.html)

I mentioned she isn’t a petrolhead….

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g205/boristhebold/20160606_174410_zpsnwp7yjnk.jpg (http://s57.photobucket.com/user/boristhebold/media/20160606_174410_zpsnwp7yjnk.jpg.html)

During the days of practice we pottered about this stunning little island. Loads of churches open up their halls and do breakfasts, cakes and teas etc. Football, cricket and rugby clubs act as campsites and make a years worth of cash from the fortnight. (I’ve travelled quite a bit and have yet to meet a more welcoming and friendly ‘people’. We went out for several group meals and you had to be bloody quick to get to the til to pay..it was often already covered, the group of 10 curry we had had been paid for the day before as the guy knew they’d be arguing over who paid. This was odd for me. I’m a tight yorkshireman)
Douglas beach race and a display by the red arrows was great (video so not sure if it will work ?)

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g205/boristhebold/th_20160607_211014_zpssncbtqmb.mp4 (http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g205/boristhebold/20160607_211014_zpssncbtqmb.mp4)

Peel beach race was a little less serious…

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g205/boristhebold/20160609_193237_zpsshethlli.jpg (http://s57.photobucket.com/user/boristhebold/media/20160609_193237_zpsshethlli.jpg.html)

But local Dave Knight, enduro god, raced hard and took no prisoners. (That’s not him above)

We did the odd touristy thing such as the laxey wheel but deliberately didn’t do it all...we need something to look at when we’re back for a fortnight for the Manx in a couple of months.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g205/boristhebold/20160612_145045_zpsai6hhkry.jpg (http://s57.photobucket.com/user/boristhebold/media/20160612_145045_zpsai6hhkry.jpg.html)

The seaside towns and villages were stunning, very reminiscent of seaside trips from the early 70s (We wish we’d been with the kids as they were toddlers!, take note you parents with young kids)

Thankfully, altho down for Ballaspur for Senior race day, we were asked to move ¼ mile away. I say thankfully as Ballaspur was where Ian Bell in his sidecar outfit met his death and the guys (and gals) we’d sat with for many sessions had the pieces to pick up. Put a real dampener on the day. A further off at the end of the senior had the subaru lap cancelled...he’ll have to come back to try next yr.

They really do travel from far and wide...this is from British Columbia, there were plenty of Australian/New Zealanders as well as yanks and Canadians

Peel harbour had an old craft for sale that was one the many small boats that crossed the channel 75 + years ago.

Sunday lunch at the Niarbyl restaurant in the SW of the Island. I had a fish the size of a small whale while Justine had scallops that she said were the best she’s ever had.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g205/boristhebold/20160529_145211_zpse2fpbt1i.jpg (http://s57.photobucket.com/user/boristhebold/media/20160529_145211_zpse2fpbt1i.jpg.html)

We wandered 100 yards to the bay and the cottages famed for their inclusion in Waking Ned.

The island is buzzing during TT week, it is a real tangible thing...and then on the Monday afterwards, it has all but vanished and the atmosphere returns to tranquil, green, mundane life etc
I enjoyed both aspects.
Those that have been - get it, many who haven’t don’t and probably never will and will perhaps keep calling for its ban due to the dangers. The danger is the essence of the whole thing but as alluded to on other threads, more needs to be done for the non racers involved in the event and without whom, the race wouldn’t go ahead.

You’ll have sussed that I’m hooked and I knew in 2012 when Isabel asked to go for her 18th present, that I’d be back. Tickets booked for 2017, digs booked etc.

An amazing holiday made perfect by stunning weather for the whole 19 days.

Der...back for the Manx GP in 2 months...or next years TT...both booked..she can choose.

Great read, Dave - really glad you enjoyed the trip and that you're well and truly hooked on the island :thumb: The Manx is more relaxed (far less spectators), so you'll enjoy that too

Cheers Chris, altho the Island are rebranding the Manx 'The Festival of Motorcycling' and the secret is slowly getting out...so it isn't as quiet as it once was.

17-06-2016, 11:06 AM
Oh yes, Dave - I'd forgotten the "rebranding" shenanigans. Still, it'll still be quieter, but not as quiet as the last time we went there in 2006. It didn't hinder our enjoyment that the weather was spot on perfect that year :thumb:

Brilliant read- really enjoyed. Thank you.

Did you go in to Castletown Dave? We rallied through the streets there, it looked a nice place :thumb:

I'll try and find the name of the national park (I think) where the classic stage starts. It's up north and sees us heading us the mountain a couple of miles after. A nice place for a mooch on the bikes I would think. In fact the full classic stage might be worth a ride, when you get bored of doing the TT course :thumb:
