View Full Version : Niges 26th - 30th May 2007 report in photos.

This was a trip that turned out to be a shakedown for my new Golf. After Easter, we were hoping for nice weather, as it turned out, it rained for most of the time.. :(

I`ll keep the text to a minimum and tell the story in photos...

Set off after work Friday, we were staying at the Hatfield Travellodge to break the journey..

Followed Louise, who drove the Mazda all the way (again !)

The vibration was quite tiresome... :( After a couple of hours, I saw something fall into my lap, turned out it was an allen screw that holds the steering wheel to the Boss ! :o

Stopped at services and tightened the allen screws on the steering wheel, 5 of them were loose

Had a sausage roll to eat, after 2 hours placed above the exhaust, it was nice and WARM !

Spent 30 minutes finding travel lodge in Hatfield  . Stopped there for the night.

Early start to the ferry.

The crossing was full, but made it in time.

01-06-2007, 09:44 AM
After parking on the ferry, I had a full brakfast, then found Rob in his 306 and his mate in his clio Trophy, he was going to bring his Gallardo, but the rain put him off... spent the next 1 1/2 hours chatting to them :thumb:

A good drive through Germany, until I was pulled over by an unmarked German customs car ! Had a 10 minute wait whislt they `checked` my passport, asked where I was going and looked serious. No photo, I dont think they would have appreciated it.. :ph43r:

Arrived at Manfreds to collect the camping gear I`d left at Easter., The exhaust had been bugging me, so I lifted the golf up to have a look around

A quick check soon revealed the problem. I`d hooked the exhaust rubbers in place, but there is a small securing tab that is then bent into position, I`d struggled at the time and meant to do it later, I never did and the rubbers had fallen off the mount. Re-attached them and bent over the tabs. I used the opportunity to check all the suspension / subframe bolts whilst it was i the air, everything was ok :thumb:

Rang Dave to ask where he was, as `d gone on ahead, I`d asked if he could help me with the tent. As it turned out, Louise arrived earlier than expected, but Thanks for the offer dave. I arrived at the campsite to find Paul & gwen waiting, they had arrived earlier and were waiting to see where to pitch their tent

Louise arrived and we finihsed putting up the tent. I was eager to do one lap in the Golf on Saturday, so set off to the ring.. There was a Queue...

Holding me up, as usual, was Thorlief

Managed one lap in the Golf, that was enough, I just wanted to do a shakedown lap and make sure nothing fell off, it didnt :thumb:

As it was Ian Howells birthday, we went to the Chinese in Adenau

Louise had taken over a cake for him :D

01-06-2007, 09:45 AM
I`d taken a few photos of Steph, when he informed me that if I took any more, the camera would be put somewhere in my body that it wasnt supposed to go :o

Later in the evening, Herr Teflon put in an appearance.

Late evening and we called it a night as we were all exhausted. Set alarm for 7:20am ready for the 8am start. The rain that night was absolutely awful, I`ve never camped in anything like it before, rain, thunder and lightening !

Arrived at the carpark to find it closed and not opening until 9am by which time they would have swept the track

Used the time to have a chat with Jethro with his EVO project car

Did the usual car park wandering and chatting with random strangers :D

After a few laps, it started to rain, so we headed back for breakfast, to find Steph changing the brakes on Pauls Golf. I think the brolly dollies at the F1 are prettier

The track was wet most of the day, but I did several laps to test the golf, Louise spent the day taking photos !

Ian Howell took me for a lap in his A4, very surefooted in the wet.

It dried out in the afternoon and I got in several dry laps on the bounce. http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b207/wh00sher/27thMay2007Session2367Medium.jpg

Managed to finally get a pasenger lap with Thorlief, that car is fantastic, it was the fastest lap I`ve ever had. Very very enjoyable. He took matthew out for 2 laps before me and Matthew said he thoroughly enjoyed them too.

The track was closed by an awful accident with a Brit biker before Hohe Acht. Ian and Andy Carlile were some of the first on the scene and it didnt not look good :(

Hippychick had booked a table at the PK and invited us along, unfortunately, she had only booked for 8 and as us and Paul & Gwen were late invites, there was no space, we went to the `comfy corner`(where we had the easter meal) to see Jorg and have a meal there instead. As usual, it was excellent, but I didnt take any photos :(

Back to the campsite and the Rock-Am-Ringers were there early. Very noisy music blaring out. To be fair, Clare had a word with one group, and they were fine, a friendly bunch and turned the music down after midnight. The other group, who were above us were a set of idiots. Music ALL night, then slept all day ready to repeat angry.gif . Even with earplugs, THUD THUD THUD makes sleeping difficult..

Monday woke to rain, so back to sleep and woke up later. Used the opportunity to check everything was still nice and tight on the Golf. Nothing was loose at all, I was very relieved.

After a wet morning, the track dried in the afternoon for 3 laps, so I quickly made the most of them. Took SteveW out for a couple, back into the carpark to give Ian Howell a lift and it was already raining.

Gave Chris Slator a lap and he repaid the favour by saving his last lap of the weekend for me in his 106. It went very well, just ran out of steam up Kesselchen.

It soon became too wet to do any quick laps, so I spent the day having PAX laps and taking a few brave souls out in the Golf. Herr Teflon didnt dissapoint and his Taxi ride was as comfortable as ever.

After taking me out in his Taxi, He mentioned he`d never met Karl, as it was raining I used the opportunity to introduce him. Karl was on form as usual, and Sunni took a shine to Darrens right leg.

Also met up with some fellow Northloopers, he`d had a `moment`, I`ll leave that for him to report if he wants to...

Found Thordur in the carpark, RNGTOY was parked up as it was too wet, but he took me out in ONNO instead. OH MY GOD, the power that thing puts out is unbelievable. He followed an STi through Breidscheid and ExMuhle, then pulled out alongside and floored it, the subaru driver had to do a double take as he couldnt believe his beloved STi was being passed as if it was standing still on the short straight between Ex-Muhle and the left hander before Bergwerk ! Wish I had a camera for his experssion

Met up with the nurburg4nowt.co.uk brothers. Nice blokes, had a lap following them for half then they followed me for half. I then offered to take them for a PAX lap, really enjoyed it and I think they did too, it was the first time they`d ever had a PAX lap

A rainy evening meant we had a great meal prepared by Louise in the tent :thumb:

Had a few beers and went to bed, Steph went to spend the early hours with some Germans..

A late start to Tuesday and it was cold but dry. Went to the sprt bar in Adenau to browse the net and have a coffee. Then went to find how to get to view on the outside of the Karussel. Drove most of the way and walked the last part. It was quite a walk, but definately worth it. Louise wants to go in the dry over the summer. It was overcast and my lens is not good enough for low light conditions, but these are a couple of good ones.

Back to the campsite to do some packing then to the ring for some DRY laps!
I arrived to find a dry track and a quiet carpark, Louise wanted to have a lap in the Golf, she never had one in the last one , so took her for a steady sighting lap, then she asked if she could go out again, pressed on a LITTLE harder, but still a steady lap that I was happy with. There were plenty roadworks around the circuit and they kept moving as they were doing barrier repairs, but I still managed 2 good laps. Bck into the carpark, louise climbed out and ian howell climbed in, another laps and then swapped passenger for John, ians friend from work. Had a good lap following Ian in Johns Focus ST .

Back into carpark, took out Matthew and Catherine. In total, I did 6 laps on the bounce, only pulling into the carpark to swap passengers. The golf never missed a beat, the brakes had zero fade and not a single issue. :thumb:

I was a very relieved man that the Golf had made it through the trip without a single hiccup :)

A meal at the PK on Tuesday

The kids had bought PSP`s with their birthday money, kept them quiet on the journey and we allowed them to take them into the restaurant tonight.

Saw some graffiti by Das Chin

The laptop battery is rubbish, so we plug in wherever possible, matthew went round the other side of the wall to plug it in and plunged a table in the restaurant into darkness, he blushed and went very quiet !

SteveW had joined Ian, Jude, John, Sarah and us for a meal.

Bren, Dale, Andy and another biker turned up for a meal and they took great delight in telling us about Andy Carlisle`s lap. He was first out and didnt think anyone would catch him. Happened to glance in his mirrors at Bruunchen to find them full of the Viper, it had been sat behind him since the exit for the Karussel   . Dale who`d been following nearly fell off his bike laughing :D

01-06-2007, 09:48 AM
Back to the campsite for our final night, earplugs were again required, but had a decent sleep. up at 7am to pack away the camping gear. The Golf is currently filling its role as mobile storage.

Parked at Manfreds next to Stephs Golf

The run to Calais was pretty slow, fast cruising on the autobahn, but then traffic, it was as bad as being in Britain !. Thank god for satnav, we recalculated a route and avoided 10 miles of standing traffic

Had Rhubard slice for lunch, Dave`s favourite :thumb:

Missed our aollocated Eurotunnel trip, but they put us on one an hour later, so that wasnt too bad

Back into the UK, we spent the night with friends in Kent and drove home on Wednesday, the M1 was as busy as usual... :(

Back home safe and sound and a relief that the shakedown trip was over without problem. On the way back, we were already discussing future trips and even next years, I can safely say, we`ve got the bug :D

The Golf is staying at Manfreds for the summer.

Re the tyres, I was going to post in the Golf thread, but yeah, they were superb. I am a convert :thumb:

This is a pic of the front tyre after 6 back to back dry laps.
I still need to mess with the tyre pressures, and they are not brilliant in the wet or dry The only `issue` I have is their propensity to get stones stuck in the tread and flick it out when you are on a fast section, making a loud bang and if you dont know what it is, quite scary. And the fact they overheat after a couple of laps...

I think its because of the wide gaps in the tread blocks, as you can see here

Really enjoyed this trip, no lows and lots of highs and met loads of fellow northloopers which as always, makes the weekend all the more enjoyable :affection:

Nice report, reminds me to take more pics.

I wish I'd have stayed for the Tuesday now, but I had to take the Friday off instead due to poor planning.

Would have made a wet weekend seem a bit better.

01-06-2007, 11:41 AM
Love the write up and pics :) and certainly did enjoy the PAX lap :thumb:
Great to have other members about, makes the trip all the better.....maybe next time we'll have better weather B)

I dont miss much :ph43r:

I`m really pleased about the tyres, just need to see if I can get any over there, but I need to wait until after the next weekend to see how they last, as I did 24 laps this weekend and only about 10 were dry, so treadwear was minimal.

nice report, hope we se us again in july :),

Glad you liked the tyres, im hoping for a couple of Dry Trackdays this year to try them out. I have noticed the same things with stones as well.

thats the idea, the last one was too rambling, so I wanted to do one with more pics this time :thumb:

PYE, I`ll still keep adding to the golf thread, but as its in Germany now, I wont be adding much :( Wish you`d have mentioned the stones issue before, scared mme the first 2 times until I realised what it was !!!

Thordur, I really want a lap in RNGTOY sometime !

10 years ago

Look how some people have changed and others look almost the same.

I do enjoy reading these old reports, brings back so many fantastic memories :veryhappy:

01-06-2017, 07:49 AM
Back in the days that you called all your family by their full names.

And you could still buy Rhubard !

01-06-2017, 08:20 AM
I didn't even recognise louise in the tent picture (!)

Andy C
02-06-2017, 08:55 PM
How time flies!

There are faces I recognise, but can't place names to.

I remember holding up the Viper like it was, well not quite yesterday, but not ten years - no way is it ten years. Some numbers must have been missed out in this counting business.

And who are those children?

I remember the green Golf. Did that make it to print?

02-06-2017, 09:06 PM
The Golf has changed more than some of the people.

02-06-2017, 09:21 PM
Back in the good old days when people did trips and trip reports...

24-06-2017, 03:49 PM
Did you ever get that ride in RNGTOY???

24-06-2017, 03:56 PM
Did you ever get that ride in RNGTOY???

NO ! I`ve never been out in it.

25-06-2017, 01:04 AM
NO ! I`ve never been out in it.

Ok we will have to fix that.
