The cheap and cheerful tour

Gary’s idea was that this one would be a cheap trip, ‘’lets see just how cheap I can do it’’ was his idea. The original plan was to take the Rover for its first visit and fill the passenger seats with like minded people. He enlisted the help of Simon and Neil (scratchn) and was hoping to fill the other seat too. As time got closer another offer came from Mr Teflon who was visiting at the same time and had spare seats in his car. A plan was hatching.

Saturday
As had become the norm an early start, Gary out of bed by 4am and collecting Neil by 4.30. An easy drive to Gillingham with the Rover eating the miles like the true luxury car it is.

6.30am and Darren and Simon were waiting to collect Gary and Neil from his brothers. A quick transfer of luggage and the guys were on their way to Dover. Once at Dover Darren showed his true driving ability by stopping for a green traffic light. It was almost one of those ‘’have they not got a colour you like in there sir’’ moments.
At the port the guys met up with Darrens friends and customers in some very tasty BMW’s and a Skyline

After the usual queues at the dock the guys were pretty much the last vehicles to get on the boat. A quick and easy crossing with Neil spending a fair bit of time out in the fresh air trying to get some colour back into his cheeks. Met up with Ian Howell and Steph who were sharing a trip over with Pete rallyes van and Stephs golf on the trailer.

Off the ferry and the journey started in the Mi 16 taxi with the other cars following

Twenty minutes in and there was an issue with the Skyline, it had blown a hose and needed a quick road side repair. Back on the road again and a pretty uneventful journey to the track. The first taxi stop was to drop the guys off at the ring house.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v501/tvr400/Nurburgring%20May%2007/IMG_6865.jpg

Next was the pub in Adenau to pick up the keys to the 205 from Karl finally on to Manfreds to drop Simon off. A quick dash to drop the gear off at the apartment and up to the track for the 5.30 opening. That was the theory anyway. With the Renault racing on

the GP track the Nordschleife was being used solely for a race series. This meant that the main car park was being used for race cars and not open for tourist cars.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v501/tvr400/Nurburgring%20May%2007/IMG_6876.jpg

A chance to chat with Damon (Omen) and Johannes until luckily the track opened at 6.15pm. Gary took advantage of a relatively quiet track to get a couple of nice laps in.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v501/tvr400/Nurburgring%20May%2007/IMG_6903.jpg
On the third lap Gary stopped to help a stranded driver at Flugplatz. As he started to walk back up the track to warn on coming drivers a bike rounded the Quiddelbach bend and threw the bike across the track stopping by the Armco. The rider was up quickly and Gary now had to run all the way back to the top of Quiddelbach to flag traffic. Twenty minutes later he was able to finish his lap.

Gary went straight back out on track and found Cal in his Subaru. Gary gestured for Cal to tuck in behind and follow for the rest of the lap. A chat in the car park after revealed that Cal enjoyed it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v501/tvr400/Nurburgring%20May%2007/IMG_6983.jpg
The track now closed there was time in the car park to reflect with everybody before driving back to the apartment.

A meal at the apartments and the day ended around 11.30pm.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v501/tvr400/Nurburgring%20May%2007/IMG_6934.jpg
The usual early start with Gary waking at 6am his mind racing with the previous days events. Up to the track for 8am ready for the track to open only to find around 50 quad bikes waiting to go on track. This delayed the opening. Gary and Simon spent the time chatting to Damon and his friends with their 997 RS’s and other exotica. Time to chat to Andrew Mulholland although by now Gary’s voice was fading fast. His Malaria from the previous week was really starting to kick in. (most would have called it a cold but this was clearly something much much worse)
Once the track opened the usual mad rush occurred with everyone wanting to get out and get a few laps in. Gary did 3 on the bounce the 205 still feeling as strong as every. The EBC yellows Gary fitted at the end of last year still working well. The bite not quite up to the Mintex’s but lasting a good number of laps nearly 70 by the end of the weekend.

Neil spent some time at T13 taking pictures

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v501/tvr400/Nurburgring%20May%2007/IMG_6937.jpg
Gary took Neil out for a lap, Gary once again proud that he made someone feel very sick, although he was gutted that he didn’t actually throw up. That was probably a good thing though as the passenger door and window don’t open in the 205. After the lap they nipped down to Adenau to take some pictures. A chance to say hello to new bike marshal member Mr Bean.

Gary dropped Neil back in the car park and went out to lap again. This time doing 4 laps back to back.
The weather was now starting to hot up, not a cloud in the sky, the biggest issue was getting out of the car with a sweat soaked tee shirt on. Yuck.
Simon had an issue with the Subaru, this time it had spilt coolant, were from was a mystery, maybe the rad or maybe a hose, it was too difficult to diagnose. Simon had his driving licence taken from him for 30 minutes while the track was checked to make sure he hadn’t made it unsafe to drive on. ANOTHER REMINDER THAT YOU MUST CARRY ALL THE DOCUMENTS DETAILED IN THE FAQ SECTION THREAD AT ALL TIMES. Luckily it didn’t appear to be an issue and all Simon had to do was get the Subaru to Manfreds. The ADAC to the rescue again.

After a few more nice laps on what was a reasonably but not overly busy track Gary and Neil went to Mini karoussel to take pictures again. Gary met up with phototgrapher member Kristoff for a chat.

Back at the track Gary got a couple of laps in on his own before his 205 taxi service opened for business.
Ian was the first victim
Next up was one of Darren’s customers
Followed closely by Steph
Then after that Darren
Then another of Darren’s customers
Then James Freeman

Amongst others a chance to chat with Stip, Carsten, Johannes and Andy Carlisle. A chat with Bren about 2007 new years eve, more to be revealed in the future on that one. A great lap with Ron (75 experience) Gary catching and passing Ron, followed by a switch round and Gary following Ron again. The Alfa was brilliant to follow, sideways at every opportunity and throwing sparks all over the place. It would be fair to say that Ron could pedal a car.

By the end of the day Gary had managed 26 laps in total for the weekend and also proved that the 205 still had what it takes to break the nine minute barrier.

Back at the apartment Ian and Steph joined the guys for a meal. A little later than planned but by the time all the car and trailer movement had been finished it was gone 10pm before they sat down to eat. They retired around midnight after a tiring day.

Monday

Another early start to the day with Darren collecting the guys at 7.30 am for the trip to the ferry. A fairly un-eventful drive back other than Darren trying to pull the old taxi driver gag of taking the guys on a detour hoping they hadn’t noticed in a bid to bump the fare up. Either that or while gabbing he took the wrong turn…..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v501/tvr400/Nurburgring%20May%2007/IMG_7451.jpg
On the ferry the guys joined up with Ian, Steph, Darren’s customers in the skyline, and Chris from circuit days with his family.
The guys were all hungry and decided to eat. Gary asked the girl behind the counter what she would recommend, she replied ‘’SOMETHING BIG’’ the guys looked at each other and burst out laughing.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v501/tvr400/Nurburgring%20May%2007/IMG_7452.jpg

Possibly the funniest moment of the weekend occurred as the guys trundled across the cats claw in the customs area. For the first time ever a hand came out and they were asked to stop. A raven haired beauty wandered over to Darren’s window. Darren cool as a cucumber shades on was heard to have said ‘’no problem lads I will get us out of this’’ The conversation went like this……
Beauty………………………….. ‘’Good afternoon sir and where have you been?’’
Darren…………………………...‘’we’ve been to Germany’’
Beauty…………………………...’’Is there just the 4 of you?
Darren …………………….…....’’Yes’’
Beauty……………………..…....’’How long for and what part of Germany’’
Darren……………………….….’’Just the weekend and the Nurburgring
Beauty (with a grin on her face)..’’ You didn’t take this round the track did you’’
Darren…………………………..’’Yes’’
Beauty (laughing ALOT) …..…. ‘’Move along please sir’’
Darren …………………………..’’Don’t forget my website name’’
Beauty ………………………….. No more talking just a wave of the arm to move us on

Another funny moment happened as they got close to Gary’s brothers house to collect the Rover. Darren proved that stopping at the green light in Dover was no fluke by slowing to almost a complete standstill at another one. On reflection is there any wonder that none of the drivers Darren has trained has ever won a race. Lights are red, engines revving, lights change to Green everyone goes. Everyone except Darren’s pupil who sits waiting for another colour, one which is prettier perhaps?
The guys noticed this golf on the drive. The male FRIENDS looked to be nicely chilled out with one stroking the back of the others neck. Darren struggled to pass them but it was thought it could have been a couple of the Northloop golf owners with their new project car. Nigel, Nick, Steph, Ross ………???

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v501/tvr400/Nurburgring%20May%2007/IMG_7455.jpg
The Rover was collected by Gary and Neil and that and the MI16 found them on an empty piece of dual carriageway. The game was on !! Much to Darren’s disappointment the Rover proved to be a worthy tool, pulling out a healthy margin even though Gary didn’t rev it over 5000rpm. Once up to the legal limit the guys backed off – a good job as the Rover wasn’t capable of much more.

The rest of the journey home was pretty uneventful with Gary dropping Neil off and trundling the last couple of miles home to see Emma and Charley.

Once again a great weekend. It was nice to meet and chat to new and old members. Loads of laps, great weather and great company.

Trip cost breakdown
Rover to Dover – £17
MI16 to Nurburg - £ 35
Accomadation / food - £56
205 fuel (26 laps) - £96
Ferry food - £10
Extras - £10
Total -£224

Cracking read Gary (even if some of it I remember slightly differently to you  )

Proves that budget trips can be done, mine slightly enforced by being carless in the afternoon (that saved me 2 or 3 tanks of fuel thou :thumb: )

Did I not tell you my eyes work at 65hz so I can see faster? Most electrical systems in this country cycle at 60hz - I'm bound to miss a couple of things in the mid frequency cycle - FOOL!

And you are a cheeky monkey Kinghorn - I don't remember our little carriageway duel ending like that - in fact, you'd better send me a picture of the back of your car because I don't remember seeing it at all  :ph43r:

^^ Ditto, great read.

You've basically done what I have to do, and try and keep costs to a minimum otherwise I can't go / lap nearly as much as I'd want to!

My cheapest trip with 30 odd laps came to £340 at the end of it, driving my car from Swansea and back. Now with the JK and my move to London means trips are around £250.

Gary

Thanks first of all for a great report and the photos....I am concerned about the look on my face in the 205 but I can work on that area of my game!!

I would also like to express my thanks for a cracking pax lap on Sunday afternoon. I was astonished at the speed compared to my vicar style lapping, but can honestly say I learnt a huge amount in I guess the 9 ish mins we were on track.

I would seriously recommend a passenger lap for anyone new to the ring. A lap with Gary in his Pug made me realise how capable the car was, and gives me a little more confidence in my own version! Totally exhilarating!!

Anyway, to sum up, a great weekend and good to meet the Northloopers. Looking forward to the next trip during July I would imagine....

All the best! :thumb:
