Thursday 5th

Finish work.
Get home to put final bits in the car.
Pick Jude up and go to meet the Pinders on the M1.
Travelled down to Dartford Travelodge to stay the night on a pre booked £15 per room special. Always worth checking these in advance for any event.

Friday 6th

Up bright and early and off to Dover for the 8am ferry.

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a175/ianh26/DSC04780.jpg

Checked in and met MattS3 and friends in the line. Usual talking about the Ring till it was time to board. Paul and Gwen (Vectra2.0T) arrived and came for a chat as Dave and Claire also arrived. With the car being full and on lowered suspension I made a little fuss about clearance and we went onto the lower decks at the front. Louise followed in the Mazda but think they got wise and forced Nigel up the level even though he was in the same situation as me.
As usual we headed straight for the Full fry up for breakfast. The trip was passed talking to fellow Ringers on the boat.
We were the first cars off the ferry and pulled over to wait for Nigel.
Paul & Gwen and Dave & Claire also pulled over. We watched the whole ferry clear and still no Nigel. Eventually after about 10mins the whole ferry unloaded and finally Nigel came off.
The European journey got under way.
All went well till we hit Germany. We got to the Autobahn and as agreed we picked up a little speed. Nigel decided to come past for some reason and the next minute grey smoke exploded out the exhaust. Nige will tell you more about this in his report.
We did eventually get to the Ring for about 4.30pm.
As we drove in past the viewing points the crowds were unbelievable. Every car park was full with cars parking all along the local roads, two abreast in some places.
We later found out that it was the busiest Good Friday for around 10 years. Off to the camp site, checked in and unloaded the cars. Tents started going up but with not long till the track closed the Girls let Nige and I off to get our JK’s and our first laps of the year.
JK sorted for me but not Nige and we did our sighting lap. As Nige had only got a single lap ticket he jumped in with me to do my 2nd lap. As we came up Kesselchen to …..corner I felt the car lurch and loose all power. I thought the turbo had gone. We nursed the car up to and around the out side of the Karusell to one of the marshals there. Opened the bonnet to find the inter-cooler pipe of the turbo had come off. With it re-attached in trusty clip and gaffer tape we finished the lap with the boost turned down. Hung around talking to people on the car park then made our way back to the campsite to find that Jude had put my tent up and her and Louise had the evening meal on.
Night was spent round a fire eating and drinking till bedtime. Now the reason we were camping was to reduce costs and so we had made sure we were well prepared. We had the airbed, good sleeping bags and a fan heater to warm the tent. But, my sleeping bag was not adequate, nor was a 1kw heater and the extension lead kept tripping, so the night was spent very cold and every 2 hours re-setting the trip switch. By morning I was question this camping lark!

To be continued...

Saturday 7th

Got up and got ready fairly quickly as we wanted some early laps before it got busy which we did. Met other Northloopers on the car park and talked about the usual.

Got a lap round with Nick in his Caterham. Jumped in, did harness up, put my helmet on and realised I had no visor, too late said Nick put these sunnies on. The lap was great fun as usual and Nick flew round. All I had was a T-shirt and my N/L fleece on and by the time we returned we were both frozen. My eyes had stopped watering and had turned to ice. Took Nick out in mine to repay the favour, owed him some from the Oct 2006 trip when my car played up. He seemed to like it, saying “it had some poke”.

Took Paul out for a lap (Vectra 2.0T) which seemed to go well. Hoped to take Gwen out but they had to leave to visit family in France.

Came back to the campsite for breakfast, had tea and toast freshened up and eventually wandered down to Adenau to view at Breidsheid. Had our prepared lunch and decided as it was quieter than we expected to go back on track.

Got some laps in myself, and more passenger laps with others.

Went out in Darren’s (Mr Teflon) Pug 405 which was very well set up for a taxi, not a bad driver either… although not happy he wouldn’t stop to get a kebab in Adenau!! :D

Took Simon out in mine, once again he seemed to think it wasn’t too bad. Took Darren out in mine to discuss suspension set up and reckon some new bushes and shocks would make a big difference.

Unfortunately had an issue with the other pipe from the intercooler coming loose while taking Jude round. Gaffer tape and the trusty Leatherman tool to the rescue again. What I didn’t realise was that this moment was to change the rest of the trip.

Overall the day appeared to be a lot quieter than we expected.

By 7pm the day was coming to a close and we started to collect for the N/L photo.
Back to the camp site for corned beef hash round the fire and a few more cold beers.

more to come....

Sunday 8th
Up early again and down to the track for some early laps then back to the campsite for breakfast.

Jude had Chocolate as she had given it up for lent!

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a175/ianh26/Nurburgring/DSC00111.jpg

Saw MattS3 and friends on the car park who had been doing the Alfa 75 experience. Took Matt, Robin and Neil out for lap’s which they all seemed to enjoy. Sure they will expand more on their thoughts.

Generally a good day again, with more Pax laps and some of my own.

One of the highlights was to get out in Steve Gills M3 CSL. The sound of it alone is fantastic but it goes and handles so well. Plus Steve has some idea where the track goes and knows how to use the car a little…

As we were out for the N/L meal later I brought Jude back early. On the way back I could hear a slight squealing on the rear brakes so at the campsite I investigated only to find the new Black stuff pads I had put on before I left were completely worn down to the indicators!. I thought it would be ok as I had brought some spares only to find they weren’t the correct pads (arrived the day before we left – think they are for an s14).

Got ready and out for a very enjoyable meal in Adenau with the Northloop gang. Great food and great company.

Nick couldn't be bothered to shower though as the beer was calling.

Monday 9th

Up early again for some early laps with Nigel. The light was fantastic on the track so we had some steady laps taking in the views as the track was empty. Unfortunately this was to be some of the last for Nigel. I took Neil out for a lap with Matt following for the lines. We came in and waited for Nigel to come back in. Unfortunately he didn’t.
The next few hours were spent helping Nigel sort things out, his story to tell.
Later in the afternoon a few of us went to Quiddlebach for some viewing. As the track was so empty I decided to go out for a couple of laps and see about some Pax laps.
On the way to the track I had a large temp spike. I got it to the petrol station near the entrance and let it cool down. When I got out and checked there was a pin prick hole in the radiator and steam coming out the expansion tank. A couple of calls latter and Louise turned up with Radweld. Followed the German instructions and left the car to get some Pax laps. Steve Gill got me out again and Bob kindly took me out in his Lotus with the 1.8 Turbo conversion (250BHP).

What a fantastic car, very different to the M3 CSL but both great experiences. Thanks guys.

Got back to the campsite and James and AndiCruzzin helped out looking at the car to see if the pump had gone or the Stat but all seemed OK. Cheers Guys for your help.

Usual food, beers and a fire again.

Sorry Clare,

Stress and tiredness is my reason :(

Will look to finish this off with some photos in next day or so but sorting out work and getting the car home has taken up a bit of time since getting back.

Thanks for a great week with you Dave and Hollie :thumb:

Wednesday 11th

Up early and down to Adenau to collect the pads.. Wasn’t fully confident they would be there but still. Got to the garage and sure enough German efficiency was at its best, the pads were the correct ones. Back to camp and fitted them.

As the track was closed Jude and I went to the restaurant by Nurburg Castle.
We stayed at the hotel there (Burgstube) last year with IanV & GVK but never ate there or went ot the castle.

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a175/ianh26/Nurburgring/DSC00150.jpg

So I decided it was time to take Jude up the Castle, well Dave says you have to do it least once.

Due to the fantastic weather we were having the views were great.

As 5pm rolled around we were back to the track for more laps.

Jude did another lap, her 4th and last for the trip.

Met another 200sx enthusiast, Paul Walker, who had arrived on a bike but was having a few issues with gears so I took him out for a Pax lap. Behind me I had Dave & Nige in the Clio and Steve & Jude in the CSL. I thought they were going to pass, but thought it was more fun to play follow my leader. When we got back they informed me my flame thrower of an exhaust was quite impressive.

Back to camp for more beer, fire and food.

Thursday 12th

Another late opening day, so helped Nige out with a few errands.
We went up to see his car first and then to Ring racing to move the car around on the trailer.

Everyone met us there and then headed of to Cochem to see the Castle.

Can’t recommend this place highly enough as a day trip. Due to time constraints we had a whistle stop tour but did get to go up the cable car.

Lunch was had at a small take away sandwich shop. Big chunk of melt in your mouth pork in a bread roll, all that was missing was a cold beer.
Off to the cable car for some great views of Cochem. Once again the weather was great so views were fantastic.

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a175/ianh26/Nurburgring/IMG_4073.jpg

Back for track opening but with the VLN testing being on all day it was slow to open. As soon as it did we were straight out for test run and sighting lap for Jude but by T13 the temp gauge was rising again so I coasted it to the Adenau turn off and left the track never to return.
I had got bottle of water ready in case of problems so let it cool down, topped the system up and took it carefully back to the site.

There I flushed the whole system methodically a number of times. Then refilled and left it running for half an hour with no problems.

I decided it would be best to leave early and travel through the night.
We packed the tent and gear up and left at 10pm.

But 30kms out the temp rose again and I heard horrible sounds, the car lost power and I pulled over to call ADAC.

The driver came out and put the car on the truck then drove us towards Adenau as he was based there.

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a175/ianh26/Nurburgring/DSC00163.jpg

We were put up in a hotel overnight at ADAC’s expense and told we would be called in the morning. The room was a small self catered apartment with en-suite shower, which Jude was very happy about after a weeks camping. Didn't sleep too badly considering but felt too hot as got used to being in the tent.

Friday 13th

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a175/ianh26/Nurburgring/DSC04833.jpg

Up for breakfast, which was brought to the room for us.

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a175/ianh26/Nurburgring/DSC00165.jpg

Then spent the next few hours sorting out what was happening with the car.
More of that can be found here...
ADAC recovery issues (http://z8.invisionfree.com/Northloop/index.php?showtopic=4365)

Once all sorted we went via taxi to the garage to get our stuff and get the car taken to a storage garage.

The driver then dropped us back into Adenau by the bus stop. Had some lunch at the Blaue Ecke where we met Nige for a quick drink while he had his Mazda fitted with a tow bar.

The Bus turned up and took us off for a magical mystery tour of the Mosel Wine region.

First stop was the local train station.
Then train to Remagen, through the vineyards.

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a175/ianh26/Nurburgring/DSC04841.jpg

From there to Cologne for the night.

Jude did not want to walk far as we had a very early train so we checked into the Sherraton overlooking the station and Cathedral.

As they didn't have a double room left we got upgraded to a suite at no extra.

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a175/ianh26/Nurburgring/IMG_4123.jpg

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a175/ianh26/Nurburgring/IMG_4136.jpg

Decided it was time to get rid of the weeks growth before going out for a nice meal.

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a175/ianh26/Nurburgring/IMG_4133.jpg

And Jude spent ages in the posh bathroom.

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a175/ianh26/Nurburgring/DSC04851.jpg

Up and out early for the train to Brussels's to get the Eurostar

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a175/ianh26/Nurburgring/DSC04852.jpg

From there we got to London and then Crewe and back home for 5pm, Shattered but HOME!

Now all I need to do is get my car back.

Thanks to all those who gave me passenger laps :thumb:

For all the people I met over the trip, mentioned or not, it was really good to meet you. ;)

Special thanks goes to Nigel, Louise, Matt, Cat, Dave, Clare, and Holly for making the camping part of the trip and the days out great fun :thumb:
