View Full Version : My MBWorld driving experience

My lovely wife bought me an AMG driving experience at MBWorld for my fortieth birthday. In actual fact I had an AMG driving experience on the way there, as in typical fashion we were running slightly late...

First car on the list was the new E63 AMG. A saloon in white (yuk!) with black nappa and 525hp. Started with some regular familiarisation exercises on the south circuit and then moved to the north circuit. Basically some technical twisties and a little straight for a ton-ish blast. Already enjoying the car at this point!

Moved on to some wet handling exercises on a surface of special paint constantly wetted by water jets. Some good fun there, pretending to be in a mk1 escort with BIG power...

Next was the big wet roundabout for some drifting fun. This was the bit I really wanted to master, but as expected it was properly difficult. I could barely manage a quarter of a circuit before either spinning it or straightening out. Something I will have to revisit... Not helped by a throttle like a hair trigger!

Change of car and moved on to the new SLS gullwing. Epic sounds from this one, and a proper monkey! Very twitchy tail and direct steering. Started on the south circuit for 3 or 4 laps building it up, but never really felt comfortable with it. Rear end feels heavy and a bit pendulumy. Also a strange weight transfer under braking. You feel a lot of front/rear pitching at times, and under brakes the front dives, then the rear seems to lift up a bit, then the weight transfer to the front makes it dive again. Didn't like it or feel confident with it at all.

Moved straight on to the north circuit for 5 or 6 hot laps, getting some speed on the straight, heavy on the brakes and then turn in right, quite a sharp corner, probably 45mph turn. On about the seventh go, it just ran out of brakes. Pedal was hard, but it just wasn't stopping... Fortunately there is an escape lane straight on, and I took it. The instructors hand reached over, but I was ahead of him!

Turns out it had the cheapo non carbon-ceramics on it, but frankly I'd expect a bit more for 168k

I've got it all on an SD card, but seems to be very slow to upload to photobucket. I'll try to post it up later.

In conclusion, I'd have the E, but you can keep the other one.

Sounds fun, but surprising standard brakes fade so quickly :o

Did you say you were turning the TC off ?

I've driven the old one, the 211, or "Teffers shape" but not the new 212. It's moved the game on...

Not allowed to have the TC off in the SLS, which may have contributed to heating the brakes up. You're only supposed to get five laps in it too, according to the brochure, but Nev let me have a lot more than that. His son works for MSV at Brands and I've pushed Northloop to him, so hopefully he'll join up.

Sorry, I've been out getting slaughtered. I have it on an sd card. It's a little over an hour long. I tried to upload it to photobucket, but after an hour it had only reached 4%, so I aborted. I might have to crop it down a bit before uploading, but have no idea how to do that at all. Give me a week of two.....
