Palmersport Day - A Brief Report

Disclaimers:
Apologies for any shabby driving :D
All pics are swiped from Flikr

This is a driving experience day at Bedford Autodrome, driving 7 different cars with instruction. Having had friends rave about how good it was, I'd wanted to do this for a while, so I was looking forward to it...

Started with a full a English breaky and briefing at 8:00am.

The weather was cold and cloudy and everywhere was still very damp.

First up was the BMW M3 GTP and I was in the first group out. Cold tyres, damp track…

The car felt big and heavy but was very forgiving and sounded great :D

Some in car video of me here ('http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32FIApcblzE')

Then we had the Caterhams. Great fun, but were a bit of a handful on slicks in the damp! Lots of spins by everyone here :loser:

Next up was the Porsche 911 JP3, these were semi auto up through the box and felt a bit lazy, but were surprising planted and well balanced though.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3186/2892259741_141a38c958.jpg

Then we were in the Clio Cup Racers. These were excellent, great fun, light, chuckable and great handling. I really enjoyed them, until 5 gear went and we were stuck in 6th :(

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3524/3253599713_fe0ffc94b1.jpg

Then we went for the off road section which involved driving a Land Rover Defender round some muddy bits and over some obstacles, plus target practice with paintball guns. Not really my thing, so it was a bit tedious...

Then we did the Caterham challenge where you have to complete a special circuit against someone else doing the same against the clock. This was tricky as they had deliberately put ditch finders on the back and the track had water in places.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3213/2959906084_70bcb8c3e3.jpg

Then it was time for lunch, which was very good - fillet steak etc

The weather had now improved a bit and the clouds had cleared, which was good as we set off to the West circuit to do the karts, single seater and JP1.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3557/3293978494_2a5034350a.jpg

I was straight out in the JP1. The track was now dry and we had a couple of laps to warm up the tyres and brakes, then we were on it! I found it difficult to get my head round the grip and braking levels, but the instructor was good and giving direction. It was an awesome car and I enjoyed it, but I was a bit scrappy.

Some in car video of me here ('http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9suecLyfHas')

Then it was the karts which were on a small circuit - good, fun close racing.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1221/761221858_d0087dd10b.jpg

Then we had our briefing for the single seater, got suited up and jumped into the car.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3175/2642624657_22da371c9b.jpg

We did two laps behind a course car, then we were off. The grip and braking levels were ridiculous – brilliant. I really enjoyed driving these – the feel, grip, brakes and control were amazing :thumb:

Some in car video of me here ('http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACHP78DtLKU')

Some fly bys here ('http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiSV9XVozaE')

There were some good drivers there, so I was happy with finishing 7th overall out of 66. I was also fastest on the day in the Clio Cup Racer and have a trophy for pride of place in the loo :thumb:

My times:

74:71 BMW GTP (damp track)
54:92 Caterham (damp track)
58:59 Porsche 911
57:19 Clio
34:10 Caterham Pursuit (damp track)
30:19 Kart
79:19 Jaguar JP1
81:10 Formula Jaguar

The cars were well prepared and you got a decent time in each car. It was very professional, great hosts and you get a memory stick with your laps in the cars you have seen me post here. It was a brilliant day – a petrolhead’s paradise.

Other than driving on the Ring for the first time, it is the best driving experience I've had. :thumb:

Sounds like a very varied, enjoyable day. Thanks for the report :thumb:

oh, and the reason I`ve not commented on your driving is because I can`t view the videos at work, otherwise I`d do like all keyboard warriors and pick fault :D

This the ultimate track day! I did it a few years ago and really enjoyed it.
I finished 13th out of 62 drivers but didn't win any fastest lap trophpy.
You were lucky with the weather as it pissed down most of the day when i did it but what a day! :thumb:

Was this a Corporate Day or were you able to book it as an individual? If so, dare I ask the price? :o

You can book as an individual. I believe the price is approx £750, which if you compare to hiring a track car for a day plus the track day cost is fairly similar.

I think a few Northloopers have done this day. Dave Malings blagged this at least 2 times via corporate. Git. :D

Looks really good but too much dosh.

I keep meaning to waft the palmer sport website under my bosses nose, looks like excellent fun.

Wouldn't be happy about the instructor grabbing the wheel though, an intercom in the JP1 would make a lot of sense really.

Would love to do this but all my suppliers are tight gits & I'm not paying for it myself.

Jim, can you blag me a spare seat when you go on it please? :fishing:

But your are driving two very exotic cars, the palmer jaguar single seater etc. Still pricey though but looks like it's very very good!

Compared to renting a 911 from RSR for 10 laps, it isn't that dear is it :fish:

I did it in '09 through a corporate event, it was a fantastic day, if you ever get the chance, do it!

May day was made better by being the fastest in the Clio's, and the 911's, and winning overall out of 50 odd people (many actually had a clue too) :thumb:

My Dad did this and said it was awesome.

Trackday costs nigh on a grand when you consider fuel, cost of trackday, brakes, tyres, repairs etc etc so not that bad IMO.

The trick is to be invited to one of these events rather than pay it, I'm going to forward the link to my boss tomorrow and suggest a work day out.

Well he didn't take us out for Christmas, so I think it's only fair

I've been a couple of times as a guest of suppliers, an absolutely brilliant day - not the normal tame 'experience' days you often get with corporate days.

Oh, and I won last time too - happy days!

Definitely a superb day out. If you had a fun in the wet, you'd love it on dry track with the sun shining.

Looking forward to April though - Managed to get on another hosted event. This year, they've also swapped out the JP1 for the JP-LM (link below):

Did this years ago and a great day out, but the JP3 911s are utterly wank, why on earth they thought a c2 auto was a good base car I have no idea. Gearbox completely ruined it.
