View Full Version : Our 3rd 'Ring Trip, July 2010

16-11-2010, 12:52 PM
Thought Iíd write up a quick trip report, a few months ago now but still fresh in my mind. We normally head out to Germany on the Sunday, to catch the end of the weekend TF, but concentrate on laps on the Mon/Tues/Wed evenings when itís nice and quiet. Luckily Jon lives in Kent so itís handy to catching those early ferries.

Ben and Steve met us in Bristol with the Mini, popped it on the dyno for a power run as Ben recently fitted a smaller pulley.

8am Ferry Sunday morning and weíre off.

We met two chaps from uk-mkivís, this was their maiden voyage.

Stopped for a while on the Autobahn due to a horse being on the road!

Nearly there Ė

Weíre there, Sundayís TF (which was pretty quiet, but it was about to close) Ė

Felt quiet tired after the drive, so had a wander round Nurburg village and found somewhere to eat before hitting the sack.

As most of you probably know, the Ring is only open for TF on the week day evenings, so we spent Monday introducing the new guys to the local places and tool them to Brunnchen to watch some Porsche Driver training.

Unfortunately that evening it rained, pretty heavily. Not having much experience myself I decided to leave it, but Ben and Jon who have plenty of laps under their belts took to the track.

The following day we walked to the Carousel and watched some Audi driver training and other track day cars.

We headed down to TF at 5.30 and Ben and Jon went out for a lap, I went with Ben to refresh my memory before my lap, unfortunately due to a fairly big crash it shut almost an hour early, this brought an abrupt end to our evening and my window for some laps had come down to one evening, I was praying the weather was going to be OK. Out for some food at the Pistenklause to finish of the evening.

On the Wednesday we headed up the new Ring Werk to go to the museum and boulevard, quite impressive Ė slightly annoyed by the whole Ring Card thing and the restaurants etc not taking cash, ah well.

Now it came to Wednesday evening, I was going to do a lap today! Jon and Steve went out for a lap with some passengers, once Jon returned he jumped into my passenger seat to give me a little guidance. Now, I regard this as one of the best experiences of my life, I couldnít believe how quickly those ten minutes went. My recollection is hazy due to concentration, but I remember going down into Adenau Forst and the next thing I knew I was at the Carousel, crazy.

Ben on a lap

Again it closed early due to an accident, but I guess thatís the risk doing evening TFís, although last year we didnít have this problem!

Our 3rd year at the hotel Zur Burg, probably try and sort some apartments out next time though, eating out there is getting expensive!

We headed home via Ypres to look at the WW1 cemeteries and monuments etc, but thatís for a different post.

Haven't seen that section from that perspective before, great photo!
Nice report and photos, thanks for posting. :thumb:

By the way, I think your Bora looks great in that colour and with those wheels.
An unusual combination but quite striking and distinctive,
I wouldn't change it if I were you. ;)

Thanks, it was taken from the roof of a disused building we found.

Thanks again, I don't intend to change it B)

Cracking report that fiesta is a bit of a sleeper really I like it. Cracking pictures from different places to the norm. Why not try camping ;)

The Fiesta is a beast, the FRP engine coupled with H&R coilovers and 6 pot Wilwoods, it's amazing how it can out perform much more expensive 'quicker' cars.

Camping is an option, I'll have to bring it up with the guys! I did find some very cheap apartments for rent in Adenau though.

No problem guys.

One of the things I love about the place is that even after 3 trips (which I know is nothing compared to some), there is still so much we haven't discovered. Next year I'm going to do a bit more planning and get to some of the corners that are a little of the beaten track.
