Here is my somewhat delayed trip report.

Caught the Hull-Rotterdam ferry on the Sunday night, we were three up in the M5, my dad was celebrating his 75th year by joining us, also Greg was making his Nurburging debut, I met Greg when I sold him my old 325i Sport last year, just happened to mention that I go to the Ring, so he dropped me a text a few months later to say could he join us.

Arrived on Monday afternoon, then off to the track for some evening tourist laps.

My very own M5 Ring Taxi

Tuesday, we decided to check out the building work that had been carried out, I hadn't been to the Ring since May last year, so quite a lot had changed.

Wednesday - I had planned a trip to the Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart, my guests however decided they would also like to take in the Porsche museum, we decided to fit both in, the two museums are just a few miles apart.

The trip to Stuttgart is about 200 miles from Nurburg, most of which is on the autobahn, so not such a bad journey (especially in the M5)

We found a handy parking spot in the underground car park at the Porsche museum

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y100/autohabit/RingTripJuly201032.jpg

I didn't manage to get a photo of this car last year, the Porsche 917/30 is prossibly the most powerful racing car ever, with over 1500 bhp, this car won the Can-Am series in 1973, winning all but one race that season.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y100/autohabit/RingTripJuly201033.jpg

A new edition to the museum, the car recently used on the Nurburgring 24 Hours

Next stop, the Mercedes Museum. Opened in 2006, the building is cleverly designed, using three overlapping circles with the centre removed.

Incredibly, all the cars in the above photos are in the reception area, we hadn't even entered the museum yet!

Entry to the museum is 8 Euros (4 Euros if your'e over 60 - Which kept my dad happy :karl: )

Upon entering the museum, you are transported to the top floor in a lift, which looks like something out of a 1930's Flash Gordon film.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y100/autohabit/RingTripJuly201062.jpg

The history of motoring from the 1880's to present day is then available to you, no other manufacturer can boast this sort of history - Can they?

The Mercedes-Benz Rennwagen-Schnelltransporter, built in 1955, it was cabable of transporting a racing car at over 100mph. The original version no longer exists, this a brilliant recreation, built using the original drawings.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y100/autohabit/RingTripJuly201074.jpg

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y100/autohabit/RingTripJuly201067.jpg

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y100/autohabit/RingTripJuly201068.jpg

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y100/autohabit/RingTripJuly201070.jpg

The 300 SLR Coupé, also known as the Uhlenhaut Coupé, the car was developed as a race car for the 1956 season, it is basically a hardtop version of the 300 SLR racing car which Stirling Moss raced so successfully in 1955, but Mercedes withdrew from motorsport in 1955, so it was never used and became the company car of chief test driver Rudolf Uhlenhaut.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y100/autohabit/RingTripJuly201082.jpg

Uhlenhaut once drove between Stuttgart and Munich in less than one hour driving this car, which must be an average speed of well over 150mph, the car was capable of 180mph, not bad for 1955.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y100/autohabit/RingTripJuly201078.jpg

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y100/autohabit/RingTripJuly201079.jpg

Only two 300 SLR Coupés were ever built, Mercedes still own both of them, they must surely be some of the most valuable cars in the world

Excellent report :thumb:

I've visited both the Porsche and Mercedes museum too, however I went on an exchange trip with school when I was about 15 back in the late 80's - clearly things have changed, the porsche museum for one was like a long garage and consisted of only about 15 cars.

Mercedes-Benz SSK - Bulit in 1928 for hillclimb events, the car had 225bhp, it was successful enough to ensure that it cemented the Mercedes brand as one of the best, a reputation that still remains today

Mercedes-Benz have also long been one of the leaders in world of trucking.

This model was known as the millipede because of the two front steering axles, it was introduced in 1958 when the German government brought in rules restricting axle loads on truck in a bid to protect the railways.

For twenty six years Professor Sid Watkins served as head of the Formula One on-track medical team, now in his eighties he still works on developing safety for motorsport, he has been behind projects such as the HANS device and improved helmet material (which probably saved Felipe Massa in 2009)

C32 AMG F1 Medical car

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y100/autohabit/RingTripJuly201088.jpg

Although this looks like the Ectomobile from Ghostbusters, it is actually the Mercedes-Benz 300 Messwagen, which translated means measuring car, it was used by the test department to record data from cars during test runs, we now take telemetry for granted, but back in 1960 things were quite different!

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y100/autohabit/RingTripJuly201090.jpg

The G-Wagen Popemobile needs no introduction, the 500 SL created headlines in the early 1990's when Princess Diana became the first member of the British royal family to drive a private foreign car, after critisism from the UK government and trade unions she returned the car.

One of the original Silver Arrows racing cars from the 1930's, not until the 1980's would grand Prix cars again produce this sort of power, an amazing period in motor racing history

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y100/autohabit/Album%202/RingTripJuly2010107.jpg

500 SLC rally car, Mercedes had started to take rallying seriously in the late 1970's, this car was the last to compete on a WRC round, driven by Bjorn Waldegard, it won the 1980 Ivory Coast Rally, Mercedes then decided to withdraw from rallying, a decision made after Audi revealed the Quattro.

Exactly how I feel Dave, but I would recommend a trip to this museum to anyone. After we came out of the museum, Greg said that he never realised how much Mercedes had been involved in motorsport over the years. that place is an education in automotive history.

Cracking read.

With regards the Uhlenhaut Coupé, fabulous car, there is a great article on them in last months Motorsport magazine. One was used on this years Mille Miglia infact and the article follows that trip along with the background. I think they are virtually priceless, but both have been well used.

Fantastic report fella, thanks for posting so many pictures! :D
A German-car-museums visit is on my wish-list, for sure.

I can vouch for the weight of an F1 Fuel Rig, it usually takes the two biggest guys in the Pit Crew to operate it.
Wheels & tyres on the other hand, are comically light.

Y'all know I'm a big Merc W201 fan, but the W202 DTM car (the blue one in your pics) was a quantum leap forward from the W201 DTM car, and is one of my favourites.
A little EVO article about a recently restored W202 DTM is online - http://www.evo.co.uk/features/features/255...ar_gallery.html (http://www.evo.co.uk/features/features/255382/mercedesbenz_dtm_racing_car_gallery.html)

So far the trip had been a non-stop petrolhead tour, so we decided we would have a day off doing absolutely nothing...

...and if you believe that :D

About 15 miles south of Nurburg is the town of Daun, and each year it plays host to the Eifel Rally, this is a round of the German Rally Championship, but it is also one of the finest gatherings of classic rally cars.

As we arrived, there were already many interesting cars gathering in the town centre.

Back in 1983, Peugeot made a low key debut with the 205 T16 on the Sarlat Rally in France, this is the very same car, the original T16

A rare Jide rally car, designed by Jacques Durand (from where the car takes it name), like the Alpine Renault, the Jide used a 1300cc (later 1600) Renault Gordini engine, due to the car's weight, it went rather well. Back in 1972 the car was driven in the prototype class of the French championship by Jean Ragnotti.

Star of the show however was this car, the actual Opel Ascona 400 in which Walter Rohrl won the 1982 Monte Carlo Rally, after that famous victory it was shipped to Africa and used on the East African Safari Rally. The car remained in Africa until recently, when German rally driver Nico Burkart discovered the car and shipped it back to its homeland, where it was meticulously restored.

We watched the start of the race from Brunchen

Manthey Porsche were without their star driver, five-times winner of the Nurburgring 24 Hours, Marcel Tiemann had a serious accident racing an Audi R8 in Italy and suffered a brain injury. This was the last word from his blog on August 1st:

'Marcel’s recovery makes very good progress. He can move and speak normally, his memory returns. Whether Marcel will ever race is uncertain'

Quite sobering :(

Motor racing can be dangerous, but the show must go on

The R8 of Stippler, Stuck and Basseng battled with the Haribo Team Manthey GT3 of Arnold and Menzel for lap after lap, in the end it was the Porsche that won by 26 seconds, after 4 hours of racing

On Board with Röhrl & Geistdörfer in the Ascona 400. Please note that the historic rally cars are not allowed to run against the clock, they are there for 'demonstration purposes only' Also note at 2min 50sec that Rohrl starts his stopwatch, I guess he was just curious to see how his times compared to the guys up front ;)
