View Full Version : Refurbing alloy wheels

My track wheels are looking a little distressed. The laquer has chipped and obviously water has got to the alloy and made it powdery and bubbled the surrounding areas of damage.

I don't want to spend 40-50 a wheel to get it professionally done as they are only track wheels but I wouldn't mind having a go at them myself.

Any tips?

I can have a word with a customer who specialises in paint as he did his own wheels a while ago & they look superb :thumb: I will ask him for tips for you

Heres what I did

Approximate cost is 60
Duration is approx 3 days

Rub down the rough edges with 1500 wet & dry

Fill any damage with P38 metal filler

Rub down filler with 1500 wet & dry

Apply 6 thin coats of primer then rub down with 1500 wet & dry

Apply 6 thin coats of chosen colour and rub down with 2000 wet & dry

Apply 6 coats of laquer, let cure for a week then rub down with a compound paste and finally polish

Jobs a good un

better than my advice as when i asked him he said sandblast, prime, paint & laquer using a hair dryer to warm the surface before applying the laquer & to help the paint initially dry. Easy eh!!! :o

Don't do what I did once and put lacquer on top of hammerite! :shame:
