So Helen and I were talking to another couple whom we are both friends with, the lad, Ashley, is very much into cars but had never been so we thought we'd take a trip over and I'd show him what it was all about (sort of!).

Plan was to take my Focus TDi but all the camping gear wouldn't fit! So we took my mates daily driver Astra Mk3 2.0 16v Sport Estate.

Headed over on the 6am ferry and arrived at Camping-am-Nuerburgring at approx 2pm.

Erected the (massive) tent within an hour and headed down to Adenau after seeing the MASSIVE traffic jams basically everywhere else in the vacinity of the 'ring entrance.

Had a bit of a watch and enjoyed what turned out to be nearly the only sun of the weekend!

Went to the BE for a beer and saw Micheala + Dan + friends.

Then headed up to Pinnochios for din dins.

Pretty much back to the tent for a beer or two and sleep.

Saturday was spent doing a bit of watching, and some time up at all the new attractions, including the scary climbing stuff where we saw Teffers/AGT. Teffers was being shown the way by his lad Toby 30ft up in the air. We all had a go (Darren's pics to follow!) and I got scared! Got into it after a few mins but still not really my cup of tea!

At some point during the day, we did a lap in the Astra with me driving, Ash in the PAX hotseat and the girls in the back. I promised faithfully to go slowly which I duly did, despite wanting to 'go for it'. So Helen has finally done a PAX lap on her 3rd trip!

Later on meal at CC with the gang, Cpt. Solo, Dale etc etc etc, which was nice. Jagerschnitzel was very tasty (Thanks Jorg). Also Gary and Jim turned up looking worse for wear! We heard some stories about how they got on. :thumb:

Had a beer up at the Nurburger Brauhaus in the new area and then onto Eifel Stadl where there was an American Style (German) band doing covers of some American soft rock/pop which wasn't too great. Was also pretty expensive, and lots of bell-ends barging through everywhere. So we had one drink and left!

Back to the campsite for some beers and a large campfire! That was lovely. Tim in Nurburg popped up for a beer before we all went to bed. (Not all together!)

Sunday, BIG lay in, then a walk from Brunnchen to Adenau round the track which was cool.

Mark very very kindly drove me back to Brunnchen to collect the car as it was going to be dark before we'd have gotten to the top otherwise!! Top man! :veryhappy:

Had a meal at the Chinese on Sunday night which was very nice.

This morning, packed up all the stuff! Bought the obligitary sticker from the DH garage and applied it. Set off at 0920 and made the 1400 ferry despite a fair bit of traffic after Brussels! Phew!

All in all, a good trip, good to catch up with a few people, have a few beers and chill out!

Not sure how I feel about all the new stuff, even the DH garage is all different inside now with the 'Quick Bistro' and all that jazz. Hmmmm.

Prefer the old skool style of everything rather than the commercialised side of it that has now been developed.

Ahh well, times are a-changin'!

Saw a black turbo'd German Civic (shape newer than mine) which was quick. WANT.

Also the Silver Clio with Sequential box was awesome!! Very loud, but very quick!

Like the E30 in the Karussell.
Nice report Dave. :thumb:

At the campsite a whole load of VR6 crew having a 'rev your engine' contest for about 3 hrs on Saturday morning.

Didn't many many actually going fast on the track. Bark worse than bite.

Also, lots of VAG/20VT crew doing skids all over the place, some in the middle of the night which was a little scary when all your protection is made of canvas. :o

The above (skids during middle of night) is circumstantial evidence based on the fact that the car doing the skidz was a 4-pot (i.e. not one of the VR6 crew, unless it was the GTi 16v Mk3), and the area the VAG/20VT crew were in was completely torn up like a ploughed field! :fish: :nono:

Dave G

Cheers James.

E500 - Not sure?

They tried the whole 'Everybody get down on your knees' and it properly lead ballooned.

Not getting at them personally, but it wasn't a great 'show'.

And yes, they were in cowboy hats looking pretty ghey just as Jim says the flyer promised!

Cheers Mr. Pye. :thumb:

Dave G
06-04-2010, 09:36 AM
Camping was fine as we had decent gear. If we didn't, it would have been FREEZING. :nono:

Average MPG was around 30. This was the drive over (at steady 80mph where poss), a bit of driving round the area, one slow lap, and driving back fairly quickly to catch earlier ferry (90mph average where possible).

It's an X20XEV.

It was just under 32mpg, due to treating every road like an autobahn! Nice pics dave, did a pro take them!?!

My apologies for this mate, on behalf of the others. I was there with the 20vt crew (as we have been aptly named) and I do rememeber what you're talking about. One evening after most of us had gone to bed I think someone did try to do a few handbrake turns on the Grass with limited success.

A couple of the cars there were only loosely linked to our main group, and we did notice some with a tendancy to pull the handbrake whilst going up and down the slope.

Hope nobody offended you. I'll pass on the comments. We're going to try and limit the number in our group next time, what started out as me and a handfull of good mates ended up with 28 people tagging along!

Otherwise, cracking weekend!

That's alright bud, I totally understand.

It's just when you are asleep at ??AM :fish: it's a little worrying hearing someone tearing around who is likely to have had a couple of beers.

I was waiting for him to come near me as I had my friendly hammer next to me. ;)
