View Full Version : Nordschleife for one day

1300 miles for 10 laps!!!

It all began on Friday afternoon when a good friend of mine rang to say he was going to miss my company on a the trip to the Nordschleife for Sunday and then Spa Monday and Tuesday.

Despite the trip being planned for weeks I’d decided to duck it because I wasn’t prepared to pay the £200 each day for Spa.

But after the call I thought sod it I am off for the Sunday. I spent the rest of the afternoon trying to get a ticket for the Hull to Rotterdam crossing to join my friends. Being based in Chester I’ve found it the best route for me.

2 hours later I had to give up, no spaces and I didn’t want to drive to Hull to only be disappointed if a place didn’t come up.

So felt really down after the excitement of a return to Nurburg. Booked dinner with my brother and went out to drown my sorrows.

Woke at 5 a.m. and decided f*** it I’m going. Got approval from the boss and jumped in the CSL.

Did Chester to Folkestone ‘quickly’ :ahem: and arrived at 0900 to be frustrated with a 3 hour wait for a place on the Chunnel.

Whilst on the Chunnel looked around the car to discover the front pads had about 15mm left. More about that later….

Got to Hotel Rieder for 6 and surprised everyone by walking into the bar and asking ‘where’s my beer’ you should have seen their faces!

Early start the next day, misty conditions so the circuit was moist, so did 2 moderate laps on the Cups.

This one got ‘hurt’ on its previous visit

I had set the objective of 20 laps to make the trip worthwhile and closures permitting felt I could do that as I did 22 laps in a day previously.

The rest of the group joined in dribs and drabs as their hangovers allowed. 3 more laps before a closure and started to feel more confident in the CSL so picking up pace through Hatzenbach and Eschbach, but both still frustrate me a little as I know there is more pace available.

There were only 2 bikes in the car park, it made for a very different feel and laps without dealing with them was nice as its been ages since I lapped without compromising corners.

Then some pax laps in my mates highly modded GT3. Fantastic piece of kit.

The first of my frustrating ‘outages’….my mate needed fuel so rather than jumping out for a session in my car I said I’d go with him. Then he decides he wants V-Power fuel. Long story short, the bloody Garmin stitched us up into going up a single track road for 4 miles and we ended up taking an hour to do a 20 mile round trip!!!

2 more laps on my return they weren’t the smoothest as I was a little wound up by the loss of track time. So I decided to get off and go calm down.

Then a tray of pommes mit curry sauce at the garage café, only to return to a shut Nordschleife! Long stoppage of 1.5hrs.

Did another couple of laps and started to experience brake fade. This told me what I feared and the pads had given up. Quick inspection and the last 15mm was gone.

So off to Ring Racing to see what they had in stock. At this time my plan was to leave Monday morning 2 .a.m. CET to make the Chunnel for 0600. With my pads gone I wasn’t sure if I was going to be stranded until a set could be found, potentially keeping me in Germany till Monday p.m. So after an hour waiting for Ring Racing to get to my car they had come Pagid Blues, so I was off back for 3 more laps.

These were my best laps of the day and as I clicked over the 60 lap experience mark I felt I was really getting to grips with the circuit.

A really bad shunt after Hohe Acht left this Mark IV Golf without its front end and most of its engine.

I came out of Hohe Acht a few cars behind it and had to emergency brake to avoid it as it was facing the wrong way right on the normal line. There were 3 cars and a bike stopped so I carried on.

A timely reminder of no matter how confident you are at a corner the unexpected can be waiting for you. Interestingly the car had attracted several bad behaviour stories during the day in the paddock, and there was another car driver on the scene looking very pissed off with the owner. So I believe some sort of contact occurred as it’s a hard corner to get wrong enough to hit a barrier straight on and rip the engine off your car.

This incident closed the track for the day so it was off to Pistenklause for dinner with a couple of friends before an early night and early start.

Given I knew I had to be away from Nurburg for 0230 I of course couldn’t sleep and only got 3 hours sleep.

My dash to Calais was 3 hours dead on, you do the maths. So there in plenty of time.

In contrast, 8 miles from Folkestone I hit standing traffic and didn’t get above 50mph until I turned onto the M40 some 3 hours later….how p*ssed off and tired was I? Very.

So a great last minute adventure, but a combination of lack of preparation (pads) and bad luck with timings limited me to 10 laps. I was still happy though as I thought to myself 10 laps of the Nordschleife on a Sunday was better than being at home mowing the lawn!

Not arguing- done my hard core!

I'm 36 now, I want fluffy pillows, manicures, virginal maidens feeding me grapes and somebody else to transport my car so I can just turn up in a chartered helicopter.

Not much to ask.

I must confess that the only times I have taken a Caterham have been wholly sunny trips. There was a slight shower just after we filled up in Belgium and I had half a turn of opposite lock on the slip road at 70mph in 6th on cold ACB10's   Can't imagine that would be much fun all the way..........

Sign me up for the viginal maidens too please ;)

Great photos, as usual.

Good short trip!

Our 24 trip resulted in 3 laps, with spin and a kiss from the armco.

The first two pictures are so perfect, they could almost be from GT4 (with slightly better graphics)

Amazing. :thumb:
