Not really a Ring report, I'll leave that to Gary, but rather a hearty pat on the back to the builders of the K series engine cos I didnt break it!!

17 laps over a day and an evening including a brilliant lap with IanV in the passenger seat and us sat 2 inches off the Ring Taxi's bumper. Brilliant fun, shame we didnt have a video- Ring driver didnt best pleased tho :o

Weather was amazing, bit slippy in the morning (ahem Ross) couple of lengthy closures, lots of chatting, brilliant company, a lap in the Vantage S (hmmmm yum) couple of laps in a Boxster S and then the rest of the time taking people for passenger laps and having a ball.

Only overtaken by two cars all trip (the Ring Taxi-bloody fast in a straight line that and a GT3) two fabulous laps with Simon following and videoing  , lots of traffic but must have been in the 8:40's, then finished the weekend with my first ever sub 8:30 lap(could have been faster had it not been for the UberML at Wipperman!!)

Stunning company (thanks Juan and Ross :thumb: ), glorious weather, flat through SX and Pflanzgarten for the first time ever, on the limiter in 6th towards SX and foxholes, and not a good car for taking too much kerb.

Must get a big lazer thing for the rollbar on the Caterham, we got baulked (oh Christ IanV remember?), blocked and driven over all weekend and it was only when UB tried to run me off the track that I realised the car is so bloody small other drivers cant see it!

Anyways I'm off for a lie down. It's great to be back-cue Gary!

Big shouts to:

Gary
Simon
Ian
Ross
Juan
Big Jim
Weeman
Dutch reg'd Lotus chap (sorry forgotten already)
Tankman (good luck with the move back to Blighty)
and the rest of you top fellas.

And of course Uncle Benz.

Thanks for everything buddy! We did it at last! :thumb:

I still think its all a big con, you`ll tell us in a week that you werent really there...

You`ll ruin your image if people think you can actually have a trip with no breakdowns you know...

Good report :thumb:

Spoke to Ian this morning, he mentioned Ross :( but said the company was great :thumb:

Karl,

Didnt you tell me to NOT go that fast through SX, cos its very dangerous?

Karl

Yep :thumb:

Maybe "on the limiter in 6th" in the Westie's 100mph? :D

Or maybe it has a nine speed box? :ph43r:

Cracking day. By some accident my timing was perfect all day. Closures only happened just after I'd found myself a comfortable carpark, or gone for fuel etc.

Bob (the other Dutch elise) and I took off after the announcement the 5pm closure would remain until at least 6pm. When did the track open again? If it did open at 6 I bet that last 1.5hrs were fantastic. Dry but cool & mostly empty?

Actually it was nearer 120 mph. Loads of grip, but as I was explaining to Gary the problem is how fast you are then approaching the right hander immediately after, its quite hard to get to the left of the track for the turn in, the surface is really rough and I need to get down two gears as well.

Probably quicker to actually take SX a bit slower. You must remember it weighs 500kgs and only has about 150bhp, so places I was flat in that I wouldnt have dreamed of doing in anything else. I am not brave or anything its just a really forgiving complimentary car.

Oh and Karl, yes I heard you- something about ducking a punt?

Westfield- cheeky bastard!

I know how good caterhams handle and it always surprises me just how much better they are than my elise, but that still takes big balls. :thumb:

So, just to confirm (getting driving tips from Oakie is bound to end in tears  ) are you flat on the limiter along the straight and stay flat through the corner, or do you lift/dab brakes, to reduce speed slightly, then go flat as you turn in??

SX is pretty much flat - but not flat on the throttle (?) in an average Caterham as long as you stick to the middle of the track IMHO.

Gearing dependant of course.

I bet you ran out of revs all over the place Nick?

leavingeasy
09-10-2006, 05:01 PM
Whatever that straight is called before SX I had to lift going up the hill cos I was on the limiter in 6th, that equates to about 125. As I crested the hill into SX I could put the throttle hard on the floor and pull 7000 rpm all the way round. That's about 120.

Then had to fight may way to the left for the righthander, brake on the bumpy entrance and drop to 4th.

Was out of revs on just about every straight bit. Perhaps it needs a 3.62 diff?

Who knows- I'm not brave or talented, just the Caterham is fab.

 you passed me rather quickly (green Dutch Elise) in Hohe Acht, quite impressive to see how flat you went through there.
later in the parking I noticed your Yokohama A 048 R's........ that helps

Good effort :thumb:

My car gets to 145mph along there, so i wont be trying it flat  but it'll be interesting to see what speed i normally take it at

Hi Nick,

Just had an Argentinian Fillet on the stone at the PK with Ross and Gemma washed down with a beer!!!

How did the TV shoot go?

By the way its actually IanH and NOT Ianv, he might wonder why he is being referred to in a trip report when he wasn't here.
As for the Ring Taxi, it was great fun following in its exhaust gases (yes we did get that close as it breaked for a car going off the track). Will do more of a write up when back but that seven of yours is great fun and I will vouch that it was here and went round more than 3 laps!!!.

My clutch held out in the end, even chasing Juan round in the STI with 4 up for my last lap before one of the red 360 ferraris closed the track by stacking it into the armco just after the mini karousell!!

Anyway about that next beer....

I was more worried about being suction onto the seat, my sphincter was twitching that much!

Joking aside it was one of the highlites of the weekend, apart from the Aston V8, so thanks for laps, will sort out the Nissan for a fast lap next time we are over togehter. Was getting more confident by the end of today...

with more boost, a clutch that will take it, some decent tyres and a recirc valve should go very well,

not sure of ant times until i check the videos when i am back though.

Ian.
