Snetterton 2008. The first Time Attack event we`d attended, it was a great day out and Duncan managed to get into the Final for the first time !. Even more enjoyable when you are supporting someone you know so we agreed we`d do the same in 2009.

Oulton was earlier this year, Duncan, Rachel & Annabelle had stayed at our house the night before, done TA then back to ours. Calendars were consulted and October 9,10 & 11 were booked.

Mat & Annabelle are pretty good friends  , we told Annabelle we`d be setting off as soon as Matty & Cat finished school on Friday, its a 2 1/2 > 3 hr drive, so we wouldn`t be arriving until around 6pm at the earliest. Unknown to her, it was a teacher training day, that meant no school so we could set off Friday morning. Duncan would take Matty to school to collect Annabelle and she`d see him waiting for her outside the school gates, that was the plan anyway...

Left home at 10:30 Friday morning

Set the cruise at 74mph, listened to an audiobook and the journey flew. The kids were looking forward to the weekend.

Arrived at 1pm. Rachel was at work, Dotty at school and Duncan was finishing off a website he needed to get finished so we entertained ourselves for the rest of the afternoon, I chatted to Steve Gill for an hour on the phone .

He had told Annabelle to walk a certain way out of the school, that way she`d walk towards Matty, typically, she forgot and walked a different way :loser: She spotted Mat, but by then, her friends had left and were heading a different way. No matter, she was still rather excited :D

Friday night was spent chilling, catching up, eating Chinese and drinking beer :drink: :thumb:

Saturday morning was an end of year get-together for Annabelles triathlon club, we met at Thetford forest and the kids and some adults were going on a mountain bike ride through the woods. We`d taken a bike for Matty & Cat, so they could join Annabelle on the ride whilst we went for a leisurely walk.

Duncan needed to Call Zen to check something, but as we were in the middle of a lot of trees, mobile reception was `sparse`. Mat tried the old wave the phone in the air and hope to get a signal approach...

Duncan walked around the field trying to get a signal. He had no success either..

He needed to get in contact with Zen, so drove to find a suitable mobile signal. Rachel, Rachels friend, Lou and I had a nice stroll on the forest paths, arriving back in plenty of time.

Matthew was back with the first group, he`d thoroughly enjoyed himself and said he`d love to set off and do it again.

Catherine also enjoyed it, but problems with her gears meant the uphill sections were a bit of a struggle..

Smiles all round after an enjoyable hour.

After the BBQ, it was presentation time, not only did Dotty come 2nd in class for the year, she was also made next years Junior Captain ! :thumb:

Can you tell she`s happy?

Back to the house, Duncan and I changed the braided brake hoses and replaced the brake fluid with some nice new Castrol SRF.

Fezza and John arrived to deliver some fuel and say Hi, last time we`d spoken was at the ring before their first ever laps, so hearing how those laps went and generally catch up was an enjoyable way to spend some time.

Checks were done and the car was taken out for a final test and to tweak the MAP. Duncan drove and after some instructing from him, I adjusted the map seeing as he was driving :smug: .

Back home and we put the car on the trailer, strapped it down then Duncan started loading up the Frontera with his race suit etc. I decided it was time to let him concentrate and so went and had a beer instead :D

A homemade Spaghetti Bolognese was for dinner, very nice it was too ! Stayed up until around 11pm then decided it was time for bed. Alarms were set for 6am and we went to bed.

I was thrilled when my phone rang at 03:45. It was a call from Steph, his mate had `dared him` to ring at that time. I`d rather he declined. Once you are woken quickly from a deep sleep, it takes some time to go back to sleep. :shout:

12-10-2009, 08:43 PM
Alarms went off, quick breakfast and we set off on the hour drive to Snetterton. Little traffic and we arrived in time to unload the Impreza before the drivers briefing.

Hanging around the garage, I spotted some dodgy looking blokes heading my way. One seemed particularly happy with his media jacket number..

Another kept checking the time :fish:

Al was there doing a video on the EDC, Andrew was there to lend a helping hand and even though they had early starts, all were in good moods. Had a good chat then they were off to work and Duncan was preparing for the warm-up.

Even though he probably didn`t realise it, everyone was aware Duncan was in the `zone` and tried to give him as much space as possible. He must have thought we were the best helpers in the world !. "Anything you need doing Duncan?", "yeah, number plates need swapping.." minutes later, it was done :D

Duncan went out for the warm-up and came back reporting the car was misfiring at high revs. Once again it was the crank sensor that was causing the problem. Typical, it had been perfect yesterday. Duncan went back out and went at normal speed through the corners, but lifted off on the straights. He still went as quick as in last years Qualifying session :o

The front arch liner was rubbing slightly so Julian was taksed with cable-tieing it back into place.

Practise and it was just a case of checking everything was working properly but not pushing too hard as there are no prizes for times set in this session...

A few laps back to back to get it all warmed up. No issues :thumb:

Duncans sisters & families, Rachels Sister, Dad & partner were all driving up to support Duncan in his bid for the Championship. They aren`t petrol heads but all realised this was a big day and made the journey to support him.

Cat & Dotty helped keep the younger members warm

I looked, er, in need of a shave..

Matty spotted some rather bling brake disks..

lunchtime approached, so back to the X5 for a fryup of bacon, sausage, beans, mushrooms, eggs and teacake (without currants..) Unfortunately, one of the gas canisters had emptied itself, so I had to juggle everything with just the one.

Success, it smelled lovely and tasted better.

On the walk back to the pits, we passed the `max power` stand.

With shiny cars.

The drift guys occasionally made mistakes too.

I popped in to have a talk with Moff, it was his first Time Attack Event and he was running standard power in his car with full interior, yet had set 6th fastest in his class and if he could move up to 5th would qualify for the final ! Having done a trackday earlier this year and had some instruction from Phil Glew, I had spotted a section where Moff could gain a significant amount of time, I showed him the photos of the line he was taking compared to the `fast` guys and we had a discussion about the pros and cons of that line. He had nothing to lose and said he`d try it in Qualifying. Unfortunately, a misunderstanding in the pitlane meant he went out for 5 minutes in the wrong session and then couldn`t go out in his group to qualify :(

Also had a good talk with Roadrunner, he`d come along to support another team but found time to come and have a chat. Good to meet you again Andy :thumb:

I called to see Daniel, I`d bought a couple of sets off tyres off him when he was running an E30, he was out in his E36 M3, cracking car but a breathing issue meant he was blowing oil and he had to cut the day short.

Met up with Dave G and Karan, we`d had a quick talk when they arrived, but it wasn`t the ideal time, so we met again by the chicane to watch some of the EDC qualifying.
It turns out Dave has a fetish for Cable Ties. If they aren`t fully tightened, well, it bothers him and he HAS to pull them tight

More of Duncans family were arriving and all seemed to be enjoying themselves

Mat & Dotty carried on where they left off in August..

Sooo, if we hide this key....

Duncan was explaining Time Attack and his car to Rachels Dad and Partner. They admitted later they sort of understood the attraction of it all :o

Duncan was leading the championship and the only driver capable of beating him for the title was the driver of this EVo

If Duncan qualified 1st and the other driver was 4th or lower, the title would be won, probably too much to ask and it was likely the title would be decided in the Final.

Two dodgy looking geezers hanging around a dirty yellow car...

12-10-2009, 08:45 PM
Wandered over to the back straight with Dave, Karan and Matty to get some photos of Duncan in Qualifying.

An RX7 went off at the bombhole and hit the tyres, so the session was paused. We were listening to the tannoy and we though he`d said Duncan had done a 1:15.3x. Surely that couldn`t be right? his best time last year was a 1.18.x, the car has no more power than last year, it has better Aero and Duncan has improved his driving, but 3.5 seconds? no way.

Whilst pressing on, he also tried a few new braking points. Some worked, others didn`t

The session restarted and we headed back to the pits, we looked at the timing boards and the time of 1.15 was correct ! Duncan had gained a huge 3.5secs since last year. Even more good news, the EVO driver had qualified 4th, the Title was won :veryhappy: The sense of achievement and relief was immense. From his first ever qualifying to the Final last year, 12 months later, here he was, Champion of Time Attack Club Class !! Outstanding.

The kids celebrated with an Ice Cream !

This meant Duncan could go out in the Final and drive for enjoyment, with no pressure to get a time to win the title. Julian and I swapped the wheels / tyres for a better set.

Ready for the Final

Committed entry to the chicane

The car was looking great and perfomring flawlessley

The sun was getting low making the cars look even better IMO

As the session was nearing an end, Duncan put in a hot lap, it was a 1.14.999 !

Smiles all round in the garage and Duncan was understandably elated !

To cap off a great day, Team Zen`s Pro car was Driven by Phil Glew to a scarcely believable 1.09 laptime !

The Pro Championship Winner was Olly Clark again.

Had a talk with Jon, he`d had a good run and ended up 3rd on the day, although this `moment` was a bit hairy...

Much piss taking in the garage next to Duncan when I showed Steve a sequence of John losing it at the Chicane

It was time for the presentation and even though it was dark, late and bloody cold, a lot of people stayed to watch the trophies being presented.

Ladies and Gentlemen. The 2009 Time Attack Club Champion.

Thats an ex F1 camshaft dont ya know :smug: (Duncan told me.. ;) )

Afterwards, it was time to load up the Impreza, say our goodbyes and head home. It was a 3.5hour drive but we were still buzzing from the day ! well, we were for the first 30 mins, after that, Lou and the kids fell asleep leaving me with my audiobook :D

Fantastic weekend, spent time with very good friends, Matty & Dotty spent time together, we watched Duncan win the championship, what a way to spend a weekend :veryhappy:

Great report Nige and was a great weekend with family pinder again.

The best from last year in the final for me was 1.19.2 so was over 4 seconds quicker OMG !

Thanks for the 'space' to be in my zone - was getting really worried in the morning sessions when the car was misfiring in both of them. The first time it was running right was for qualifying when it mattered at about 3pm ... a long nervous wait and having seen the times the guys that could use more than half throttle were putting in, i was having extreme doubts and visions of losing it.

Still cant believe it though.

Good to see Roadrunner, Al, Andrew, Dave G and everyone else - the pit garage was constantly packed :thumb:
