View Full Version : Selling a Car - Any Tips?

Have been trying to sell my 2001 VW Passat TDi 130bhp but not having much luck! This is probably due many factors -

> the recession induced and depressingly depressed 2nd hand car market
> the resultant fact that so many are currently trying to sell cars for cash
> my bad-timing (would have got decent money for it 9 months ago)
> everyone is looking for a bargain because there are serious ones available

It's a well-spec'd car in good shape and used to be in quite high mass-market demand. Is there anything different I can do, either to the car or in advertising the car, to assist me in my quest and help it to stand out from others on the market? :fish:

Thanks, Rory

You could try draping a hot bird across the bonnet for the photos!

That would make it stand out :P

Post your advert up.

A good advert, with all the right info and pics will save people time asking questions. :thumb:

This is the car:

It is a Comfortline and I am currently asking 5900 for it (having come down in price to sell). It's not advertised online at the moment but had it on Carzone.ie here in Ireland with little response (apart from a few dubious calls from people in London saying they had a buyer but wanted a 100 fee!). I have it currently advertised in local newspapers but it's definitely a buyers market! :thumb:

 @ Trevor & Ian :thumb:

Helen. How deep is that hole you have dug yourself?

Rory. Might be worth a punt on Ebay with a reserve?

If you want to sell your car, first of all get some decent pics without the mountain bikes!

That says to me that the car has been overloaded every weekend and ragged down green lanes looking forthe next mountain bike fix.

Get photos of the car after its been cleaned/hoovered, from all angles, inside front, inside rear, in the boot and under the bonnet.

Try and get the pics in a nice location with as little in the back ground as possible.

Check what prices other similar cars are going for and price it 100 less than the half way point.

If its too expensive people won't look at it, if its too cheap people will keep away from it.

Oh, and your not going to like this little bit.

In my opinion, after a 2 minute check on Pistonheads, compared to mainland prices, your asking more than double the going rate for one of those.

The most expensive one in the UK is only 3950 and thats a fanboy car with KW suspension and Bentley alloys

Thanks for that Sim :thumb:

Incidentally, I didn't actually use those mountain-bike adorned photo's in my ads but they were just the first ones I came across for posting here! Thanks for your advice on photographing the car and on pricing (scary and all as it is :o ). I based the price on the average of similar cars advertised on Carzone.ie over here but will look again and act accordingly! It is a good car in good shape so would like appropriate money for it but the market is currently kicking my butt!

Maybe I could chuck in a few bars of Green & Blacks Organic Choc to speed up the sale. :fish:
Cheers :thumb:

If its a "normal" car, like your Passat, I always use pistonheads and autotrader to price the car.

Ebay is always about 15% cheaper, unless its a fanboy car, where it can do much better on ebay.

I'm also my own worst enemy when it comes to photographing, but mint photos can add 500 to the car or make the difference between someone looking at it in the first place, or ignoring it all together.
