View Full Version : Andy Walsh Carlimits Day

I went on the Andy Walsh Carlimits day today.

Long story short - it was properly awesome.

Stuff what I learnt:

He lets you go your own pace through a corner and then teaches you stuff
Not touching the pedals going round a corner can turn a 40mph corner into a 60mph corner
Standing on the brakes all the way throughout a corner can turn a 40mph corner in an 80mph corner.
I can go round tight corners, in full control with a cars width to spare at 75mph now!!
You can induce oversteer pretty easily but its VERY easy to catch.
My car is awesome, Russ is a car building genius.
VX220T's are not as fast as you'd think.
My missus drives slow
I am a complete and utter hooligan and spent most of my free time going sideways, and now I need new tyres.
I also really scared an old man who jumped in for a passenger lap, it is his fault as he scared me changing gear in the middle of a corners, so he deserved it.

I'd say anyone considering it, do it.

There is a full 6 hours of driving, It gave me a chance to take my car to, and past the limits, and increased my confidence in the car tenfold.

I used to be a little bit apprehensive about RWD, but not now, its bloody brilliant and so easy to control.

The car apparently is very easy to drive and very well set up, and apparently would be perfect for the Nurburgring, good job really and goes to show Russ' work is outstanding even in the eyes of a professional.

I have a few things I need to tighten down and secure before I go on a track day....I ended up with a high vis vest on my transmission tunnel on the course after lunch.

The missus wants an elise next (She muttered something about a Z4 but I say elise would be more fun)

And finally, Bwahahahahahhahaa. (True as well as they didnt want to use their car in case they damaged it, so used the instructors car)

That place looks vaguely familiar, it's not the airfield where we went shooting rabbits with the night vision and M4 Carbines is it ?

Quite fancy doing one of these this year, if I can save up ;)

Do we have a N/L discount available, and if not why not :P

Anybody else doing one of these later in the year or fancy doing one?

Ian

I've just read Niges report and comments.

My day was quite different by the looks of it.

and one thing I noticed was how explanatory Andy is on the how, why and how you're going to do it.

Quite unlike your experience.

There was also very little waiting about. Not enough for me to notice it anyway.

Mark83 from here is also doing the day, be good to see how he gets on....

I'd do one again. Without doubt.

They are 4 people max on a day, which is a slight issue for 'group' based things as 4 is a small group.

Better that and more driving time though.

Had a look last year but no pare money, mind not sure if I will have enough this year

Rather pay the 200 than the 400 though ;)

Sounds like you had fun Dave, from reading the various reports it seems that the RWDers get more out of the day?

Montana
17-02-2009, 11:22 AM
I dont know, because everyone there had RWD.

However, he has techniques for FWD and high speed cornering so that'd be the same activities.

The the day is not only about learning, its about having fun too, and Its going to be a lot harder to powerslide your FWD car so I'd image that 'maybe' you'd have less fun, but he does seem to be quite flexible so might well be able to tailor the course to include different things for FWD cars.

Andy said the techniques for FWD/RWD/AWD were the same IIRC. Nick and Nige had Golfs, I had the Subaru and Simon was in the BMW and we weren't told anything different.

Montana

The DVD shows some slightly different techniques but I'd reckon you might have trouble getting a FWD car sideways under control as easily as can be done with a RWD car/LSD.

Maybe not though.

I'm organising some car handling instruction and practise days later this year on some MoD land for charity. Help for Heroes. Can I assume some interest here?

I was meant to be on the day with Dave a few weeks ago but snow forced us to re-book. I did the course the day after and thoroughly recommend it to anyone.

Andy Walsh was a great teacher. There's a lot to take in and get your head around which was probably why the other 3 guys on my day had already been on the course before.

After a couple of hours I was 20mph faster through the high speed corner eventhough I braking and steering one fingered

Sounds good Jim, any more details?

Ian, depending on what Jim sorts out may still be interested in the Car Limits but won't be till a bit later in the year ;)
