Hi guys

Don't ask but a girl here at work needs a cheap car, she's found a vauxhall tigra with 80,000 miles on it pretty cheap and needs it quick as her other car is about to die.

Just wondered if any of you could tell me what to look for when we go and look at it? Any issues/noises etc, she wants me to give it a run rather than her.

Vauxhall's have tendencies to blow the headgaskets around that mileage, so I would very, very well look at the coolant level, the colour of exhaust gas:

white -> steam, could be early morning condensation around these times but if it sustains after the car is hot enough, its water leaking, burning and becoming steam, is blown head gasket.

blue -> valve stem seals or hg leaking oil, oil being burned creates blue smoke

black -> bad fuel/air ratio, rich fueling.

Open the oil-cap and watch for Mayonaise around it, this indicates water mixing with oil and creating yellow/whitish goo slime mayonaiseish substance, bad bad bad.

Other than that, I use this checklist to go by a car when I check a 2nd hand one, obviously some items apply less or more pending on car and age.

Outside

Look for obvious signs of wear and tear, accident damage or rust, but be realistic - a 10-year-old car is quite likely to have a few minor rust spots.
Do all the panels match?
Are there any odd rippling or orange-peel effects?
Are there signs of overspray, ie on window seals?
Are the gaps between panels more or less equal, and do all the doors hang and open and shut correctly?
Look around the wheel-arches for signs of botched filler repair or corrosion. Often this will be hidden by a new plastic wheel-trim.
Are sills, wheel arches and door bottoms rusty?
Sporen van gebogen sills, bad use of jack / jacking points
Do door and window seals show signs of leaking?
Has VIN number been tampered with?
Is any of the shock absorber boots broken?
Shock absorber corner test, double dip
Are there oil marks on the sellers driveway/front of house, if so ask him about it, he may be caught out on surprise.

Inside

If the seats are saggy
The steering wheel worn smooth
Worn or missing pedal rubbers (or brand-new ones)
Driver's seatbelt that doesn't retract properly
Worn carpet under the driver's mat
If the numbers on the clock (odometer or mileometer) don't line up properly
Are the carpets wet, especially in the driver's footwell?
Look in the boot, and lift up the carpet if possible. Are there any signs of welding? Or is the floor rippled from an impact?


Under Bonnet

Look at both the front corners and down the sides for signs of welding or botched repair to the inner wings (also a chance to note down the VIN on the engine).
Look at the oil dipstick - is the oil golden-brown and clear, or black and lumpy?
Look coolant in the radiator expansion tank?
Is the brake fluid or gearbox oil low?
And what about the power-steering fluid?
Oilpan, signs of leakage
First, check out the engine
Does it fire up quickly? Check whether the car was warmed up and started before you arrived - the engine will be warm if it was).
Are there clouds of blue smoke from the exhaust?
Are there any odd tapping noises - especially those that speed up when the engine speeds up - metallic clunks and so on, and does the car tick over evenly when the driver's foot is not on the throttle?
Does it work unevenly?
Start the engine and try to switch from P to D and from P to R holding the brakes -
Is the time between shifting and the moment the transmission kicks in too long?
Gearbox noise, on tickover, clutch in, gearbox should be silent, clutch out, gearbox should be silent.
Make sure that you are insured to drive the car.
Does it pull away evenly?
Check that you can engage all the gears - don't forget reverse - and that the car doesn't jump out of gear.
In an automatic, feel for the changes in ratio and smoothness of acceleration - does the car jerk or lurch?
Find a steepish hill and accelerate in third: if the revs go up but the car doesn't get any faster, then the clutch is on its way out.
Stop on the hill and apply the handbrake. Does it hold the car stationary?
Try the foot brakes (making sure that it is all clear behind). Does the car brake quickly and in a straight line?
Does car pull to one side when you brake?
Does steering wheel shake/vibrate, let go of steering wheel and see if cars steers itself.
Find a quiet area - an empty car park, if possible - and test the steering. Are there any clunks or grinding noises? Does the car wander, suddenly feel over-light to steer or pull to one side?
Keep an eye on the temperature gauge; this should climb to roughly halfway and stay there. Going into the red is not normal.
Listen out for any odd noises: clunks when braking or knocking sounds from the steering column.
Idling, clutch in, listen for gearbox noise.
Check after driving engine under bonnet for leaks, rattles, smoke etc.
Check Electronics
Try out all the electrics: windows, air-conditioning (where fitted), heater, radio etc.
ABS - Other Warning Lights
Make sure all the locks and door handles work properly, and be suspicious of any car that has different keys for the doors, ignition, boot and petrol cap.
If you are looking at a relatively modern car with an immobiliser, make sure that you will get the master key, often the red one.
Check that the seats fold, swivel (where appropriate) and adjust correctly, and are properly anchored to the base of the car, and that all the seatbelts fasten and retract correctly.

Final

Do the vendor's reasons for selling sound genuine?
Does what they have to say about the car ring true?
How much service history comes with the car? Don't expect a full history on an older vehicle.
The service book, which should show main dealer or specialist maintenance. This can be faked, however, so it might be worth checking with the garage.
How long is the car's APK/MOT? A genuine seller with nothing to hide shouldn't mind putting the car through a new test as a condition of sale, and you can then negotiate the sale around any problems found.

Roffle at this thread, I'm with surly bloke, hes trying to procure a way into said girls special place imo, After he's looked at the car hes taking her to in and out burger for lunch.

Would agree with The-Vee's excellent response :thumb:

My mother has a Tigra (Opel though, not Vauhall) and you should pay special attention to the head gasket at that mileage and check all the tell-tale signs mentioned above!

Also, be aware that the Tigra is a notoriously difficult car for mechanics to work on because of the limited space under the bonnet. There is a fair amount of stuff shoved into a very small engine bay and access is a big issue so your friend should be prepared for expensive servicing due to high labour costs!
