View Full Version : The Pinders New Year 2008 - 2009 report

07-01-2009, 02:52 PM
Quick excuse before you read on. I tried to take as many photos as possible with the flash OFF. This has reduced the quality of some photos and made them slightly blurry, however, it makes the camera much less intrusive, people were starting the think the paparrazi were around when I left the flash on

The New Year Trip..

After our summer of fun, we fancied spending the new year in Germany too. Plans were made, crossings and accomodation booked and we counted down the days..

We decided to try something different this time, instead of going from Dover, we went Hull > Rotterdam.
Hull is much closer to us, but the cost is a higher, so it was not a simple economic choice, we thought we`d give it a go and see what we thought. Darren (Teflon) sorted us out with tickets at much reduced rates compared to the ones publicly available from P&O. :thumb:

Left home at 15:30 and after a steady run on the M62, we arrived at Frankie and Benny`s at 16:45. It took 10 of fuel to make the journey and with a lot of people being off work, the traffic was very light. The plan was to fill up with fuel, have a meal, then go onboard and have a beer :thumb:

Food came quickly and was surprisingly nice

Mat had a good look at Chris`s I-Phone. No Mat, you can`t have one

Chris started early...

Onto the Ferry, much larger than the Dover ones !

OK, so this is our room, er where are the beds ??

Ah ha ! found one..

And another..

The Pinders in their cabin :thumb:

Next stop was the main bar and a game of UNO EXTREME This passed a good few hours and drinks. Great fun, although as usual, Catherine has a knack of winning....
The `Extreme` versions fires cards out of the launcher, Louise acted as though they were razor edged

Decided to go to the `sundeck` to say farewell to the UK for a week. It was bloody cold.

Hmmm, arcade machine. The challenge was made, Mat vs Mat. Mat won..

Next up was Chris vs Cat on the Dance mat.

Watch Chris try and stay upright once he lets go of the wall

We called it a night at around 11pm ready for an early start.

07-01-2009, 02:56 PM
Had a reasonable sleep, woke a couple of times but was generally OK. Woken at 05:30 by the ship intercom telling everyone breakfast was served

As usual, Breakfast was Pinder stylee :thumb:

Wandered down to the car after a shower and breakfast, there is a call on the intercom telling people to go to their cars, they give you plenty of warning. I don`t think the people behind Matti, Chris and Andy were too thrilled to find the car driverless

We met up after immigration and set the satnav.

A very leisurely drive, only 1 or 2mph over the speedlimit, cruise control set, toilet break and still arrived at the Burgstube in under 3 1/2 hours :veryhappy: We happened to drive through Adenau, so it only seemed fair that we drive to Nurburg via the Ring :veryhappy:

Arrived at our accomodation for the week, the Burgstube, next to the castle and just up the road from the ring entrance.

Said our hellos to the Grahams and then Duncan and I decided it would be rude not to get a few laps in as the weather was so nice. Matthew didn`t want to come lapping :o .It was rather chilly though..

There were even photographers out on track :thumb: I did 4 laps, nice and clear, not pushing too hard but thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Jumped in with Duncan for a couple of passenger laps

Seems we were not the only northloopers there, Robert was lapping too.

Track closed a little early, meaning Duncan and I missed out on "one more lap"...
Wandered up to the GH to have a talk with Robert & Frederique and their friends. Robert was feeling somewhat unwell...

Duncan called at the petrol station to buy Rachel her ring sticker, she had done her first ever driving lap in the morning and was very pleased with herself :thumb:

Having not eaten lunch, we were all a bit peckish. Heidi`s mum had made some cake, Duncan and I had a small piece

Decided a night out at pinocchios would be a good start to the week. Called at the Comfy Corner for a quick drink on our way. Met up with everyone and was shown the board with the odds for a Nige vs Karl `lap` in April

Martin and Heidi joined us for the evening too :thumb:

Pinnochios and the Pizzas didn`t dissapoint

Rachel fancied a look under the table

Annabelle, Cat and Me

Duncan and me

Leaving pinnochios and we left Adenau, We had driven down through Quiddelbacher, Duncan was ahead and at the last minute, I pulled left and took the twisty route back, I saw Duncans car sit on the rear wheels, lift the nose and dissapear up the road to the sound of full throttle Impreza..

Driving safely but not slowly, I arrived at the Burgstube and DIDN`T see Duncan waiting for me :o

The kids thought it hilarious and made their view known as he pulled up :loser:

The kids dissapeared to their room....
We had the odd beer or 2, I think it was around 1am when we called it a night :drink:

07-01-2009, 02:59 PM
Breakfast for 09:30. Martin and Heidi had set a table just for 2..... http://www.cheesebuerger.de/images/smilie/liebe/d066.gif

Matty didn`t look particularly impressed

He soon cheered up though

After breakfast, Duncan and I thought the cars may need defrosting...

On our way, I called at the cash machine for some money. The exchange rate does not make pleasant reading 29 Dec 300.00 = 299.70 @ 0.999 Euro per

We tried the 10-pin bowling at Centre parcs. Whilst booking the lane, Rachel found an interestingly titled book...

Had a look around then it was our turn for the bowling. I had to politely ask the family who were bowling past their allocated time to kindly MOVE :shout:

Louise looking all serious

Cat decided the bending this wasn`t worth it, so took the boucing bomb approach

Go Dotty !

Matty got into the swing of it too

Duncan was rather happy with his Strike too..

sooooo close.....

Lunch was at the Imbiss at Breidscheid. Rachel had GluhWine (Mulled wine), the kids did some leg excercises, try sitting like they are for a few minutes !

We stopped off at the Rewe to pick up a crate of Bitburger. Rachel spied some super cheap GluhWine..

Heidi and Martin had offered to cook an evening meal. Heidi made a Turkey breast that was seared then slow cooked, it was really nice. Some Schniztel, loads of veg and a lovely sauce finished it off :thumb:

Home made Chocolate mousse.:thumb:

We retired upstairs so Martin and Heidi could get home, we carried on drinking and talking for quite some time

07-01-2009, 03:04 PM
A relaxed start to the day and then we met to go karting. Bren had booked an hour session at the Schumacher Karting centre, its a fair drive, so we filled the cars to only take the number necessary.

Dave had driven over for a short trip with Helen, they were staying at Brens and there was plenty Banter beforehand about who was going to beat who on track :fight:
Dave and Helen

Short briefing and our for qualifying.

I started 4th with Bren alongside me in 3rd. By the time the lights went green, he was almost touching Daves Kart, he`d crept forwards that much !

Duncan took an early lead !

Matti following Chris

Sustained pressure and Dave took it back.

At times, the racing was close...

Matti ended up in the `armco` and the marshalls didn`t see him. He had to try and reverse by moving the front wheels by hand..

Duncan and I had a brilliant race, we passed each other about 5 times, all clean too. It definately made me concentrate, I knew that any mistake and he`d be past me, he was thinking the same too. He passed me

Then I passed him back

Bren had a spin ;) . He caught me and was behind me for a few laps, I ran wide and he needed no invitation to dive up the inside. Taking the long right onto the start line, Bren was turning left all the was around it, forcing me wide so I had to lift. As he said later "rubbing is racing...". It was a well made, forceful overtake but still fair. Unfortunately I didn`t get chance to repay the favour.

After a while, I was starting to ache a little, glancing up at the timer and realising I`d only been driving for 20 minutes and had 25 still to go was depressing to say the least. The next 15 minutes were on autopilot, everyone seemed to be the same and settled into a rhythm.

Matti realised the kart in front was Karl. It would be rude not to give hima nudge

While we were racing, Cat and Helen compared games on the DS.

I managed to finish JUST in front of Duncan

Karl, realising Jorg was in front of him drove the last 3 laps as hard as he could and managed to pass Jorg on the LAST LAP !!

A 3rd place finish, 4 seconds behind Bren with Dave winning, I was chuffed with that.

The kids, Rachel & Louise had booked a 10 minute session after our marathon. Unfortunatley, the circuit organisers didn`t explain to Rachel or Louise that they would not be allowed on track at the same time as the kids, so they ended up not having a drive :( The kids however, did..

Mat ready to go

Cat and Dotty waiting the green light

http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn170/nurburgringphotos/nye/th_kidskarting.jpg (http://s304.photobucket.com/albums/nn170/nurburgringphotos/nye/?action=view&current=kidskarting.flv)

Mat caught Dotty and as he was passing, they just had to gaze into each others eyes. http://www.cheesebuerger.de/images/midi/liebe/a082.gif

Catherine got to grips with it suprisingly quickly too !

Mat & Kim

Cat at full speed

They all really enjoyed it :thumb:

Bren had reserved a table at the Italian next door, so a group of went there to have a race post mortem. It was good to share the discussions after the race, everyone was still buzzing, if a little tired.

Jorg had to ring Jagoda and explain he would be a little later (I`d given him a lift there, so he couldn`t go back to work in the Comfy Corner). oops.

Andy and Matti comparing laptimes

A good 120+mph cruise back to base after we`d finished the meal. A great afternoon, thanks for organising it Bren :veryhappy:

Had a couple of beers at the Burgstube, but we were all knackered so early to bed.

07-01-2009, 03:08 PM
Next morning and we went to the GP Circuit to see what the `winter action` thing was all about. As it turned out, it was a fun afternoon.

There was a large indoor skating rink in one of the main pit garages. A few Euros for skate hire and away we went.

Louise isn`t a fan of skating, but she kept going round with Cat and me holding her hand.

Unfortunately she slipped, OBVIOUSLY, the first thing I did was take a photo before offering my help

Duncan and Dotty

Lou and Cat

Rachel and Dotty

We had lunch from the snack van then went inside for a few laps on teh PS3 / GT5 simulator they had

There was a large snow slide, so we all had a go, only got one pic before the battery said enough

Back to the Burgstube and we all had a shower and started getting ready for the NYE extravaganza at Sliders. This is where things didn`t go according to plan :(
Another guest staying at the Burgstube was taking Heidi back to her apartment when his car skidded on sheet ice and the car ended up in a stone wall, badly damaging the bumper, wing, doors, cills and bending the steering rack and suspension :o . Martin went to try and help recover them and check they were OK. He was in the corsa on winter tyres, when he approached the area, he slowed (knowing it was icy) and STILL slid off the road buckling one of the steel rims.. The gritters were out but the Police even closed the E61 as it was so dangerous. The plan was for Martin to take us to Sliders in the Corsa, he set off with the kids and me, but as we approached Musch, the road changed to sheet ice, the grit had no effect and it was worsening. Braking, even mildly at very slow speed locked up the car instantly and keeping momentum was a problem. Louise rang and told me Karl & Family were unable to get out of their drive, after discussion about the road conditions and our unwillingness to put ourselves or our children at unnecessary risk meant we made the very difficult decision to turn back.

Obviously this was a huge dissapointment for everyone concerned, Suze and Bren had spent a lot of time and money in preparing for the party, Bren offered to collect us in Matti`s Freelander, but we didn`t want him to drive in those conditions either.

I have spoken to Bren about this, but wanted to say again how sorry we were that we could not make it.

Back at the Burgstube and Heidi found enough food to make some spaghetti Bolognese, I helped behind the bar.

helped by my young assistant :)

A friend had made us a cake for Christmas so we brought that out

Spaghetti was served. The guy looking unhappy is the one who`d jsut smashed up his car, understandably he wasn`t as cheerful as usual.

Heidi demonstrated her suppleness, Rachel proudly showed she could do the splits too !

Having a beer

Duncan - "Annabelle, give matty a kiss.. I`ll take a photo ;-)"
Annabelle looks at matty and raises her eyebrows asking him without words..
Matty, no pause "yep, OK"

Passing a ball from person to person with no hands

We celebrated new Year and called it a night at just after 1am, an enjoyable yet subdued evening.

07-01-2009, 03:17 PM
New years day and we ventured into Adenau to See Jochen. The roads had been cleared and last nights treacherous conditions seemed a distant memory. On the way to see Jochen, we saw him driving the other way, flashed our lights and assumed he`d be back soon. As it turned out, he was on his way back to the UK. oops...

The geek in me was impressed that the radio station RPR1 had altered their Radio station identifier to a changing one spelling out happy new year !

Popped in to see Jorg and Jagoda to wish them a happy new year and then popped round to see the Kesselaars, Karl was delighted to see his Porsche finally sell and in the last 3 minutes there wer 2 people bidding against each other, gaining another 500 for Karl in the process !. Back to the Burgstube mid afternoon to find Dotty wistfully gazing out of the window waiting for Mat to return..

The Girls played on their consoles whilst we changed ready for the Comfy Corner meal

Duncan and I walked round the back of the Scnitzel house as it was a clear, crisp evening.

Quiddelbacher from the Castle

We headed down to the CC for what I can only describe as the best Roast Beef I have ever tasted. Jorg has been improving this meal and I reckon he`s perfected the beef, it is beautiful :thumb:

I had 2 1/2 pieces, Matty had 3 pieces and Ross had 5 or 6 !! It melted in your mouth. My mouth is watering now thinking about it

Then, we retired to the bar for an evening of Comfy Corner singing and fun. I have never seen Claire so drunk, she even told Ross she loved him

Its 2 o`clock already ?

"Lets do the timewarp agaiiiinnnnnn"

Matti and Bren getting on well :)

Air guitar

Singing loudly !

Even louder !

Even if you don`t normally click on videos, I suggest you view these 2
They need no words from me :thumb:

Called it a night at about half past midnight, Jorg is a great host and really helped make up for the previous nights dissapointments. If you haven`t been for an evening of drinking and festivities, I suggest you add it to your `things to do at the ring list`. Perhaps I`ll see you there at Easter 2009 ;-)

07-01-2009, 03:18 PM
Friday morning and we wandered down to the track, it was quite icy...

Managed to get past the fence  and made our way to the barriers.

A quick phone call to Martin and he grabbed a couple of screenshots for us :thumb:

First Northloopers on track in 2009 ??

Catherine having fun. A few seconds later, she wasn`t quite so happy...

After a bite to eat, we went to Centreparcs to go swimming.

Pretty small indoor pool and not very warm, we didn`t stay for hours as usual. We will definately make the trip to Rheinbach in future.

As it was our last evening, a meal to the PK was in order. Martin and Heidi joined us. It was a bit emptier than usual...

Food was steak on a stone as usual.

Kids had fun.

Walking back and we noticed that Annabelle, Mat, Cat and Heidi are all the same height

07-01-2009, 03:23 PM
Early start to say farewell to Duncan, Rachel and Annabelle. Heidi was not thrilled to be up so early

It was soon time to say our goodbyes and away they went. Sad to see them go, but I have the distinct impression we`ll be seeing them again soon

Martin showed us their new accomodation, all being well they will have many more rooms available in 2009, the house certainly has potential !

Said our goodbyes and called to say goodbye to Jorg and then the Kesselaars. Left Adenau at 13:40 and spotted Manfred from Wimbach, stopped and had a quick chat to him. :thumb: Finally left Adenau with a full tank of fuel at around 14:00.

Set the SatNav and took the road through Altenahr. This led us onto the A61. WOW, what a drive back !!
Entered a section of De-restricted Autobahn and sat cruising at 120.

After 10 miles, I asked Matty to reset the average speed meter, I then accelerated to 135.
/voice from the back seat/
"I thought you said you weren`t going to do this again ???"
"sorry dear".. Slowed back to 120

Very very quiet road, straight, good visibility and de-restricted..

After 30 miles, the AVERAGE speed was 116, I`d sat at 120 for most of the time, simply brilliant. I know going in a straight line isnt as thrilling as on the ring, but cruising at that speed, for that length of time was rather nice..

"Matty, why are you photographing windturbines?"
"Duncan likes them..."

Arrived in Rotterdam before 5pm, 3 hour drive, sat at the speed limit where applicable. Set the SatNav to find us a restaurant, a few were closed, one was stupidly expensive (20 - 30 per main course !), but we found a Chinese 15 minutes away from the ferry

Food arrived and there was a LOT of it !

I know lou is aware of the time when we are going somewhere, so we left for the ferry, Matty had a play with the camera.

Checked in and went to our room at about 17:30. Setup the laptop, opened some beer and watched Top-Gear Vietnam episode, Mama Mia then Shooting Stars.

Bed at 11pm, good sleep and woken by tannoy at 06:30

07-01-2009, 03:26 PM
Breakfast, shower and down to the car at 08:35. Didn`t get off the ferry and through customs until 09:20, 45 minutes to get off, jeez, I thought Norfolkline were bad !

Once off the Ferry and it was a short journey home

Arrived back in 1hr 15 minutes, much easier than the seemingly never ending drive from Dover.. :thumb:

Unpacked, tidied up and settled in for a quiet night. Whats that I can hear? sounds sporty...
Chris and Matti called in Chris`s new Corsa he`d just picked up. Chavtastic http://www.cheesebuerger.de/images/midi/frech/a076.gif

Drove to a local pub for a drink and a meal with them. I had a pint of Rocking Rudolf.

Carvery was pretty damn good.

It was then back to our place, sit, drink, watch the fire and talk about what a great week we`d just had.

Having just typed up this report that started out as a short one, I need to decide if I carry on with these epics or scale them back massively for 2009, they always end up being far longer than I planned :shame:

On our return, we always discuss what went well and not so well on a holiday, our plans for 2009 were the Ring at Easter, 2 week beach holiday in July and Ring for a week in August.

We asked the kids what they`d like to do.
"why can`t we go to the Ring for both summer holiday trips, instead of flying to a beach holiday?, we really enjoy it there and always have a brilliant time, can we, PLEASE !"

I think that sums up the entire trip :veryhappy:

Fantastic report Nige, looks like all had a top time :thumb:

Also looked bloody cold

Comfy Corner nights sure are a nice way to spend some time, looks like a great time to visit, would love to go on a winter trip again, this time with a car of my own.

Mat sure seems to be enjoying his Nurburgring trips :thumb:

07-01-2009, 03:49 PM
Great report Nige :thumb:

07-01-2009, 04:01 PM
Enjoyed another Nige production! :thumb:

07-01-2009, 04:21 PM
Great report Nige, just looked through with the kids, they also liked it. :thumb:

I wasn't aware you were filming in the CC that night. It's bad enough with all the photos. I am suitably embarrassed and am on that thing they call a wagon now! :shame:

The pics of the karting were very good, mine were all blurry.

I don't think you need to cut your reports back. As much as people might moan or take the mick, I think most love reading them, we do. :veryhappy:

Glad you all had such a great time despite the cold and we'll look forward to seeing you all again at Easter.

07-01-2009, 04:42 PM
Great report! Some really funny videos of us yelling our hearts out at the Comfy Corner. lol. I also laughed myself silly at the 'censored' love heart thingy and Matty taking pictures of windmills because I told him my dad was obsessed with them.

07-01-2009, 04:44 PM
Fab report as always :veryhappy:

Glad you all had such a good time.

Hi Nige.

Just read through your N.Y. report and it's superb! :thumb: Although I don't personally know any of your group, you seemed to have had a cracking and hilarious winter holiday, despite one or two weather-linked setbacks!

A great read and photographs and the Burgstube singing videos were brilliant, even found myself joining in!! :D

It wasn`t so much because people say they are too long, I think most skim read them anyway, but because they take so bloody long to write :fish:

We read last Easters report the other week and I`ve even had a read of ones from 2007, I find it enjoyable to look back and see what we did.

Glad you lot enjoy it too :thumb:

Absolutly epic Nige - another great read, as have all the NY trip reports! Really enjoyed reading them.

Will catch up in '09 for sure.

Cool report Nige - great detail & pic's as usual :thumb:

Germany in snowy weather brings back some great memories - as does Autobahn cruising at double the UK speed limits....

So when are you guys going back & are you planning a trip to Spa this year???

I've got to buy a new track car as my present Nissan Almera probably wouldn't impress anybody - Matt wasn't too impressed with my last car (the 523 BMW) so I'm looking for a Caterham or something as quick as your Golf felt last year!

Catch you later,

Good work as usual, Nige.

I don't think I'll be joining in with these festivities anytime soon, as my (Californian) wife has some Climactic issues to get to grips with before she considers anywhere colder for a Winter break.

Don't make them any shorter Nige, Helen and I just read the whole thing and very much enjoyed it.

I know it takes ages, even the short reports I've done occasionally take ages so this must take hours but we all appreciate the effort! :D :D :D :D

As mentioned above (somewhere) we hope to make it over the for NY next year. :thumb:

Excellent report Nige,

Fantastic reading and some great pictures.
These reports always make me miss the area as much as the driving.
