View Full Version : new focus RS

am sure it will be quick but will bomb in price like all other new cars.

i was very impressed with the focus ST when I drove one so this should be a cracker. and all for 25k!!

shame its not 4wd as could be a tad tricky in the wetski!

I'm sure it will be a very good car but I can't see how much better it would be than a moddified ST. i.e. 300bhp + LSD (no more than 3k)

it will be 24,995 to buy but thats before you can add the options on. I think fully spec'd its nearly 27k and that is putting it into play with the jap stuff which are better cars.

I give it 6months before you can pick one up well under 20

When Brooklyn Ford in Worcester started taking orders for them last year, I'm pretty sure they had sold all their allocated quota of cars.

Even if they're no better than a modded ST you'll get people that had Sierra and Escort Cosworths back in the day buying them.

Look forward to seeing Drivers Republic test one, when is it released?

People will buy them for the RS badge that is true. I personally think they look too chavy with all the cheap shiny black plastic on it.

Tony

I suspect that it will be much better than 'a modded ST' going by previous performance.
The Mk1 Focus RS was a bespoke piece of kit which cost Ford 28k to make yet sold for 23k (iirc). The new one will not be as different from the base model as the MK1 but it will feature things like wider tracks, much better dampers etc. don't forget that prior to the recent price collapse, the Mk1 Focus was still exchanging hands for 15k+ for a six year old car B)

I am hoping to blag my way on to a R26R vs RS test in the spring as that would be epic :thumb:

The only real difference is the LSD/Revo knuckle and the power.

The power is easy to achieve in the ST and the LSD and revo knuckle can be retro fitted. I'm sure it will be a better track car out of the box, just dont think there is that much of a gap between them.

mk1 FRS is a great car and they did make them for more than they sold them for but this new one isn't being made to lose money. I just feel they could have made it more powerful and maybe 4WD. I just not sure it will be special enough for the price tag.

saw a R26R at a PH meet last weekend. looks like a good bit of kit, wasnt sure about the 6 point harness for everyday driving though (there are no normal seat belts either). Hats off the Renault for making it though.

Agree with Dan, it's not really anything new is it? Ok it has 300bhp but the revo knuckle design could be found on the Megane years ago, and you don't see Renault shouting from the rooftops about it.

I would rather spend 10k on a second hand ST, and spend 5k making it as good as the RS and still have money left over for unlimited trips to the 'Ring.

I saw similar (and nice) seats in a VXR Corsa. It was the only thing I liked about it.

The Focus will be fast but as Nick says, it will be interesting to see how it goes in the wet.

That's because the Focus received mixed reviews at launch because of the diff tugging which felt like torque steer. Once you got used to it, or better still learned to left foot brake, it was an awesome piece of kit.

Monkey could get down a three mile stretch of the Wye valley A road near his house faster in the Focus than the Gallardo that he owned at the time B)

is that it? a re map and a few diff n brand bits.

mmm hardly worth the extra even if it does have the cossie badge.

2nd hand ST could be a real bargain then for someone. tune up and suspension and it would go just as well. :thumb:

Exactly. It really isn't worth it at all. Especially seeing as you can get ST's for under 10k now.

Driven one then? Unlikely.

None of us can say that the ST will be as good with an LSD & a remap but we can speculate, forums are good for speculation.

I'd seen the drawing of it but not an actual picture, it's kind of interesting in a geeky way. It's a shame I'll never get to make use of it, I'm not a ford fan by any stretch but I'd like a go in the new rs and the st, even the old rs actually.

02-01-2009, 08:01 PM
Also rs cars always command more money because of the marque, the st is a very good car but the arse has fallen out of them already and thats the way it'll stay.If Rs cars go down in value they do go back up with time,st's won't.

james28
02-01-2009, 08:19 PM
All rs cars sell well regardless and command a hugh following especially the good ones
escort cosworth a 15+ year old car still comands 10k plus residuals
3 door and rs 500s can go for anything up to 30k
the rs marque is the car imo the biggest following maybe the mini and beetle come close and regardless of some opinions im sure the new rs will be a huge sucess and when the first batch are sold the cars will probably fetch more than there original purchace price.RS rallye sport and they do it damm well so lets see how well with the rs :) :thumb:

Yep, revised engine.

My old ST rolling road'd at 292bhp & 355ft/lb, great cruiser but no B road blaster. Its nose was so heavy and was the reason I finally got rid of it so I was surprised to hear the new RS has a heavier engine and the RS will be heavier than the ST. That better be one hell of a LSD and revo knuckle.

I admire Renault for the way they went about their flagship hot hatch, Colin Chapman's ethic of add less weight but it's gone a bit too far for an everyday road car.

GVK
24-02-2009, 09:38 AM
I think it's on the first link I posted where they film Jost Capito answering questions about it, he mentions they built 4wd protypes but they felt 'heavy' to drive etc, judging by Plato + Sutcliffes comments it's a cracking thing to drive, even if it is fwd.

Neil Mac
24-02-2009, 10:36 AM
Plato seemed quite impressed, and he knows a thing or two about driving 300bhp FWD cars. Doesn't recommend the virulent bright green colour, though, which is fair comment.

I'd have one (assuming someone else bought it for me). I'd just take it easy driving in built up areas to avoid the embarrasment of unintentional dump valve actuation. My Turbocharged Japanese car had a DV with a trumpet, and as amusing as it was in Japan, it was a bit much for Olney.

Lol @ Gary

No, the 'community' is nothing like as user-friendly as Northloop BUT it is not designed to be the same. It is more of a Facebook-esque set-up that allows them to know an awful lot about the users and can then target marketing/advertisers accordingly. It is not as good for the members but it is an infinitely more powerful selling tool and therefore money generator for DR and it's owners..... or that is the theory at least ;)

My word, after reading Chris Harris's write up on the RS, I damn near had a gentleman's accident.

Even with my own bias (I'm a Mk1 Focus owner, still adore the Mk1 RS, and think Ford just watered down the design with the later cars) I just think the new RS is stunning, especially with the handling as sorted as it appears to be, and without going the full stripped out route.

As for DR, I'm something of a devotee for sure. It's a different way of using the site - it's really the polar opposite of Pistonheads in many, many ways - but the interface is just terrible. God knows how many users they have who never really get the way the site is supposed to work, plus how many odd bugs and stuff there are in it. However, the quality of the content (and groups users... ) is really second to none.

LOL @ Chris & Gary

We had a very funny drunken evening when Monkey was describing punters as 'Billies' (cockney rhyming). The name stuck and so when he launched DR it was adapted - thus Cyberbilly ;)

I too am a convert of the Mk1 RS - the ideal car for me to learn the ring - so if the Mk2 is as good as they say (and Monkey was unusually enthusiastic about it) then it will be a mega car. I am 'in negotiation' with Monkey to take one to Germany in the spring - ideally with an R26R just to make sure

I have done extremely well out of Monkey in the past but the toys have been somewhat less forthcoming since it's his own production and not autocar footing the bill :(

Some write-up. B) I must admit that I too was/am sceoptical about 300bhp and FWD. Just look how Vauxhall managed to get it so wrong in the dis-Astra VXR with "only" 260bhp.

Not sure about the green, the white does look cool but cheapens the car, blue I like but I can afford none of them. I'd be helluva tempted by a CSL for the same money though...
