Just the Mk1's mate?

Mk2 - There is 2 different Phase's of Mk2. The difference are the headlights, bonnet, wings, front bumper, rear bumper, rear lights, boot lid, door stripes, dash, steering wheel and the stiching is different on the seats. Mechanically the PH1 had a different exhasut layout and a cable throttle compared to fly-by-wire for the later PH2 cars. The PH1's also came with 15'' OZ F1 wheels.

Ph1

Ph2

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e128/pye21/Cars/Clio%20172-182/Picture010.jpg

PH2 cars were later (2004) updated again with the introduction on the 182. This received a new design of wheels and new suspension (2 options avaliable, Std and Cup). Mechanically it had a new 4-2-1 exhasut manifold (originally 4-1) a 200 cell cat and twin exit exhasut system. The engine also received a new map better casting of the inlet manifold and cylinder head all adding up to the extra 10bhp. These cars were also avalible with a Recaro seat option for the first time.

Engines!!

There are many companies that offer upgrades for the F4R engine in the Mk2 Clios. I enjoy a good engine pic so here are a few!!

This last car is a demo car for one of the Renault tuning companies (K-Tech Racing). The car has probably the neatest throttle body instal done yet and also features a very nice Sadev sequential gearbox from a cup race car.

The 172 Cup was 89kgs lighter than the 'full fat' 172. The springs (and or dampers - can't remember) were stiffer and the track was slightly wider due to the wheels. It came without ABS and half leather. Later models had Climate as an option - as was the Silver Paint. All in all though it feels a lot better than the standard 172 which is setup much softer.

The 182 gained a different exhaust manifold and something else that i can't remember to give it its extra 10hp (cough not in reality cough). The standard 182 came with Cup upgrades such as revised stiffer suspension and Cup wings. If you are buying a 182 look for these options. The 182 Cup was a bit of a marketing exercise tbh and was essentially a 182 with Cup options but poverty spec - avoid it.

The 182 Trophy has the fancy Sachs dampers up front. More desirable, but make sure you drive all variants and pick your favourite. IMO the Trophy wasn't all it was cracked up to be and the damper rebuilds are costly. Better off seeking out a mint 172 Cup, of which there are many and they are a bloody bargain.

Hi,

Nice thread. I dont really know much about Clios.

Whats the differecne between a PH2 and PH2 Cup?

Also whats are the difference between the 182, cup and trophy?

Thanks

[/b][/quote]
Thanks for that Jon,

How good is the new 197 Clio?

Are there any key changes with the clio cup car apart from huge weight loss?

Are these car pretty reliable mechanically?

The Mk2 Clio RS is a lot better reliablity wise than you may assume. I know of a few Cups now with well over 100k on the clock and still running fine. Regular servicing is essential. The 36k service has an aux belt which can cost, however the 72k service is the biggie - plugs, cam and aux belts. Apart from this they tend to go through coil packs occasionally and the engine mounts need renewing every now and again. Rear suspension can sometimes leak.

On the plus side though general servicing is dead easy and cheap, they are cheap to run and will regularly do well over 40mpg.

There are many tuning companies for the RS Clio, Yozzasport, Ktec and GDI to name but a few.

The Mk3 RS (197) is a very different car. It feels far more grown up and is considered by some to be less fun, its certainly not as chuckable. You have to work the engine a bit and its geared very short, but the setup is spot on and the brakes are extremely impressive. Its still a quick car and a lot of fun.

The 197 Cup car has the full cage, sadev box etc. Can be bought straight from RS in Dieppe.

Another great part of owning a RS (of any variant) is the RS trackdays that Reno organise. I think there are 5 or 6 this year (including Spa) and the days are heavily subsidised + you get to have a go in one of Reno's own cars.

Hold on, I knew belt changes were an absolute neccessity and can slip if left too long but a cam change at 72k? Seriously? are the cams made of cheese?

Dale pushed the 197 round the Ring 4 up quite well :thumb: . I have been told that on the road it is not as good as the 172 / 182's though.

You grow into the 197 as a road car I found. Have driven quite a few variants of those now and the grip is pretty epic. Again wouldn't bother to much with the 197 Cup, just get a well specced 197 full fat - the lack of steering reach in the Cup is a real arse. The MK2 feels the older car when you get back in one again, in build quality, and refinement - though thats not to say you can't have more fun in one.

Pete, do you not change most cambelts at 72k? I had a Fiat Coupe once that ate those belts for dinner - they really were made of cheese!

I think in my flu addled state I read it as a cam change rather than a cambelt change

I'm very aware of the need for regular changes on the RS models, I have been contemplating getting a 172 in the summer instead of throwing more money at the saxo. Sense says buy german or jap but once you've had some french fun it's pretty hard to get into anything else.

The 182 Trophy.

This is a LTD edition of the 182 that was used as a run out model before production ended on the Mk2 Clio.

In total there was 525 Trophy's built for production, 500 coming to the UK and 25 went to Switzerland.

The cars where based on the 182 Cup model, with standard cloth seats and air conditioning, instead of the 'full fat' versions climate control.

It features Recaro treadline seats (avaliable as an 800 option on the std models), Speedline Turini 16'' wheels, a one of colour and the main adition of Sachs dampers and eibach springs. The dampers use a remote resevoir on the front and the rears where allegedly just re-baged standard 182 cup shocks. The front dampers are adjustable, but where pinned in a fixed position for production. The dampers where supposed to have cost around 1200 alone.

Loony driving in that clio :o

I did love my trophy to bits, but recently the suspension decided it all wanted to be replaced, and the cambelt needs doing, that's over 1300 with me doing all of the suspension myself, getting the front dampers refurbed instead of spunking 3k on a pair of new ones etc...

What do you mean by fancy struts?

The Sachs dampers are only fitted to the Trophy.

182 Cup pack features a wider track than the standard car (different driveshafts, hubs and wheel offset) it is lowered (5mm i think) and the damping is stiffer.
