So, thought it was about time I found the time and put this all down on screen.

Things all started after a change in my personal life meant that whilst I had a villa in Corsica booked for a week, I also had a few weeks off and no plans for anything in the week leading up to the villa and the few days after.

My friend Lawrence and I planned out a route and figured out the places we'd like to see, and do and so on the 1st September set off.

Almost a disaster to start with as whilst we sat there thinking we were on the 10am ferry the Monday morning at a very late hour the Sunday night I discovered we were actually on the 8am ferry...what a plonker. Anyway after a few hours sleep we were off for the 90 mins trip to beautiful Dover ;)

Norfolkline kindly put us on the lower deck of the ferry after the bloke asked; " Have you lowered the back of this?"

Yes thats right, I've just lowered the back.

First off the obligatory few days at the Ring. We decided to press on for the evening session on track and so took the Autoroute round Brussels, Liege, Spa then Prum. Approaching Spa we passed the Renault F1 lorries on way to the GP

hi

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb251/wrx_king/September%2008%20Hols/DSC01063.jpg

The sat-nav mount I bought broke in Belgium, so it was fixed with good old gaffer tape.

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb251/wrx_king/September%2008%20Hols/DSC01064.jpg

Arrived at the campsite and found where camp Pinder had been fairly easily (Nige, that grass under your tent is beyond dead!) Said hello to Joel who was still there and set up camp.

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb251/wrx_king/September%2008%20Hols/DSC01066.jpg

Did a couple of laps in the evening (meeting Weeman there) and then went down into Adenau in the evening for a Chinese. Luckily enough there was another town party going on and we found Jorg in good spirits by one of the mobile bars. A few Euro beers later and we called it a night.

After taking it easy the next morning we spent the evening on track again with all the Scuderia Handset guys (some fast, some slow), but wary of the miles to follow I just did about 4 laps.

Next morning we got up early an packed the tent up. Noticed it was about to rain and also how cold it had got...

Set off south and got towards Luxembourg before the heavens opened. Had at this point swapped the road tyres for the track ones and it slowed progress a bit.

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb251/wrx_king/September%2008%20Hols/DSC01133.jpg

Did the m/way through Metz, Nancy, Bourg-en Bresse and then cross country using a route I know for skiing trips down into the Alps.

Somebody had landed a plane well:

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb251/wrx_king/September%2008%20Hols/DSC01136.jpg

Coming into the Alps:

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb251/wrx_king/September%2008%20Hols/DSC01137.jpg

Set up camp in a nice little campsite in Bourg D' Oisans at the foot of L'Aple Du Huez

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb251/wrx_king/September%2008%20Hols/DSC01140.jpg

Had a pizza in town and after 600 miles we were pretty tired so hit the sack. It started raining hard overnight and water was making the tent float! Loz, who was sleeping on just a rug thing got a bit wet. lol.

Woke up the next morning to find it a bit dismal, but aware we only had one real day in the Alps set off for an explore anyway. Went to Les Deuxs Alps for breakfast in the Skiing village.

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb251/wrx_king/September%2008%20Hols/DSCF0005.jpg

From there did the col du Galibier, Col Du Telegraph and the Croix de la Fer which brought us back to camp. Was a cracking round trip.

Next morning we again woke up to a soaking wet tent, but happily the weather dried up straight away, even if the tent didn't!

Set the sat nav towards Cannes and headed south. Passed over another great mountain pass and down onto the Route Napoleon - a quite awesome bit of road (though slow progress)

Setup camp in the early evening (it was now well over 30 degrees!) and headed down into town for some dinner. Cannes has a real buzz about it. Parked in the harbour and wandered round for hours.

Grabbed some dinner:

The next day (my birthday) we packed up camp again and headed along the coast. We stopped off in Monte Carlo and parked up and walked the GP circuit. It really is out of this world there. I was astounded at the money and shear opulence of the place. Amazing.

nice. and the Enzo isn't bad either.

After some lunch we headed into Italy and toward the hotel i'd booked in Genoa. Finally out of the tent!!

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb251/wrx_king/September%2008%20Hols/DSC01288.jpg

Had a beer outside the hotel and waited for my parents to turn up as we'd be sharing the villa in Corsica for the week.

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb251/wrx_king/September%2008%20Hols/DSC01293.jpg

Up early next morning for the port in Genoa. What a weird place. It really felt like we were in a time-warp, it was if we were watching a Palin program where he is in a far away port going to the back end of nowhere. We had to get there 90 mins before the boat, so there was plenty of time to take pics and be amazed at all the cruise ships.

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb251/wrx_king/September%2008%20Hols/DSC01299.jpg

Our boat:

Genoa:

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb251/wrx_king/September%2008%20Hols/DSC01301.jpg

4 slightly choppy hours later and we arrived in Bastia on Corsica. It looked a fantastic place.

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb251/wrx_king/September%2008%20Hols/DSC01313.jpg

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb251/wrx_king/September%2008%20Hols/IMAGE_046.jpg

Our Villa was in Tizzano, which is o the south coast of the island. Whilst only 100 miles form Bastia, the roads aren't exactly straight, and so it took about 4 hours!!

Once at the Villa jumped in the pool

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb251/wrx_king/September%2008%20Hols/IMAGE_047.jpg

The next week was spent expolring the island an its wonderfull towns and beaches. The people were very friendly, and I'd recommend the place to anyone who asks. The town/port of Bonifacio which I went to a few times really is spectacular, with the fortified town built up of a rock next to the newer port area. Sadly Loz had to fly home for work on the Wednesday, so I spent the rest of the time there relaxing and exploring.

Ferry to Sardinia

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb251/wrx_king/September%2008%20Hols/DSCF0055.jpg

Last day on the island my parents and I went down to the local beach which was deserted, save for a few surfers and a couple of people here and there. The wind had got up quite bad and the sea was fairly rough. Wandered along the beach and back again, up to about knee high in the water. Nearly got knocked over a couple of times and so decided to stay out of the water. On the way back a couple of guys ran past and jumped in the sea. I thought "christ they are keen" and thought nothing of it, then 30 seconds later they dragged an elderly chap out of the water. In a horified moment I realised what was happening. They proceeded to give the guy mouth to mouth for about 20 mins and Mum had to comfort this guy's wife who was in a right state. Sadly he died and they couldn't get him back. The amount of water they got out of him was astounding. I was gutted I hadn't seen him, but the high waves meant it was so awkward to see out, and they had been sitting on the rocks. They tried really hard to save him, but to no avail. It was pretty heart renching. half hour later the ambulance turned up, and they didn't even try anything - was all very bizarre.

Next morning we said goodbye and got to Bastia to get the ferry back. As we watched it come into port a storm decended and a tornado rolled across the port, lifting the sea about 80 foot up. Was amazing. Then the thunder and lightning came. A lightning strike hit a storage tower about 50 yards from the car and the noise was amazing.

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb251/wrx_king/September%2008%20Hols/IMAGE_056.jpg

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb251/wrx_king/September%2008%20Hols/IMAGE_057.jpg

Ended up being very delayed, and so stayed in Genoa again that evening, after eventually getting to the hotel quite late.

Next morning I said goodbye to my parents and drove via Turin, up over the Alps and used the expensive French tolls most of the way home.

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb251/wrx_king/September%2008%20Hols/DSCF0059.jpg

On pass above the Alps on the way back

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb251/wrx_king/September%2008%20Hols/DSCF0060.jpg

Left Genoa at 9am ish and got the midnight ferry back from Dunkerque. Was home about 3am. That had been a long day, but tbh, I didn't at any point feel to tired to stop.

Had a fantastic time and the car was faultless throughout the 3000 miles. It even averaged 39.5mpg. Can't be bad!

Anyway, sorry to drag on, but hope you found that fairly interesting!

Cheers

Jon

Nice report, and was good to meet you and Lawrence :thumb:

Corsica is near the top of places that I want to visit, so it was good to read another positive account of the place.

Superb.
I love to read the Ring/track reports but there are rarely full holiday reports like this. The Alps and RN are on my radar for next spring, done it in an old slug but planning the bike trip now :veryhappy:

Epic.

Brilliant holiday (apart from the sad ending, of course). Well done for planning and executing the adventure, and for documenting it so well.

I made it to Monaco too, though (by Easyjet).Thought about hiring a car, but decided as it was August, it would be a frustratingly slow way to se the scenery. I'm sure I'll be back, though.
