View Full Version : Easter Weekend at the Ring

Just got back today from the Ring, spending thursday evening, friday and saturday there, travelling back Sunday. Overall the weather wasn't too bad, it was generally dry apart from both mornings but dried out by early afternoon.

It wasn't as busy as I was expecting on the track, it was very busy in the car park and surround roads though but I only did 8 laps due to my girlfriend being very ill and staying in the hotel the whole weekend. :(

I went in my BMW M Coupe and knew before I went I was unlikely to be quicker in it than I was in the 205Mi16 (got 8m45ish lap). I was surprised how familiar I was with the track, having only done the 12laps back in August and only 8 this time. Still not totally sure of it but was familiar with which way things went :D I was a bit dissapointed with the BMW really as it seemed to transform into a heavy wallowy barge in places on the track and the brakes only last a couple of corners before they juddered (even with DS2500 pads). The only places where it was faster were obviously the straights and long uphill section.

However, despite never having a reasonably clear lap like I had in the 205 I managed a 9m10 in it, I'm sure I could have got easily under 9 given no incidents/traffic. There were several other M Coupes there though going much quicker than I could, probably due to the fact that I've not much experience of the car or RWD. I did spin on my 2nd lap as the track started off dry but became damp and very very slippery passing the nordsheliefe hotel bridge. I span on the uphill right hander at the bottom of the long uphill section which really shook me up as I took it very slowly and it span without warning. The fact I span and stayed on the track showed just how slowly I was going at this point!! It was kind of like Druids at Oulton park in the wet if anyone is familiar with that corner.

There was at least one incident on the track on every lap I did, on one lap there were 4 seperate incidents going on where you had to slow down, one time almost to a stop to pass a large coned off area.

I have plenty of video footage but at the moment nowhere to host it but will try and upload some sometime.

Glad you had a good time CW and thanks for the report.

If the M coupe is the same as the std M3 then brakes would be the achilles heal. I doubt 2500's would be man enough for the job? Mind you in the wet your not nailing them hard are you?

Apart from the sighting lap we did on Thursday (very slow) which was fully wet and Friday morning where I spun, I only went out when it was dry so could use the brakes. Basically I waited it out by staying at the hotel till it was dry drove to the ring and straight on track!!

They're the same brakes as the E36 M3, I knew most M car brakes are notorious for being poor on track but was really surprised how bad they were after just a couple of miles into a lap considering they were uprated pads and the brakes are lifted from the slightly heavier M3. I found with the 205 it didn't feel like I needed to use the brakes much because of slightly slower speeds and higher cornering speeds.

M cars brakes are pants in my experience. I don't think the Ring is particularly heavy on brakes and yet they turn into cream cheese really quickly. Stoptech do some nice six potters now tho- thats all the excuse you need.....!!

Whats the scoop with the going straight on bit at the finish? Is it Jahrskarte only? IS it in operation?

That saxo was a guy called crossie. Apparently he decided to race a clio v6 in the wet, and ended up in the barrier, wrote his car off, and got a 1000 euro armco bill! Beat he's glad he went!

My mate was also there in an evo 6 TME, did an 08:50, which I thought was very good for his first time. Although he used 14 tanks of fuel!! And did 250 of laps....

I know of the RUF GT2 making a mess of itself and the Yellow EVO jumping the armco at Wipperman, but certainly no fatalities ...... rumour mill working overtime again me thinks......

It takes any tickets but the booth is on the left so might be a problem for RHD cars. I went to do another lap straight away and just about managed to reach over to put the ticket in (be fine if you have a passenger though!).

I passed the yellow EVO with both RHS wheels at strange angles, there were a couple of bikes and another car stopped at the scene too.

I think I will leave the M Coupe brakes as they are as they seem fine on the road, I don't intend to track it much (or again) and if I got again in August will take the 205 which feels much more suited to it and is more fun to drive!

Thanks for the report Chris - Reading the thread about 'chip' on mig-web and by mr Lovejoy's site it seems as though there were many incidents over the weekend. :(

We've probably picked the worst weekend after Easter (May spring bank hol) to go this year :blink:

Apparently the 'Chip' story is a bit blown out of proportion, and there were no fatalaties due to his accident, directly or indirectly. He did make the mistake of driving off though, and they blamed him for leaking fluids.

So, a warning, if you are unfortunate to have an 'off' and hit something, don't drive off..... :ph43r:

I know Dave will slate me for this but I really don't see the point in a 911 when you can have an M Coupe. Newer, quality is equally as good (E.g. it's no worse). They have as much power and insurance is amazingly cheap.

If I didn't need a 4 seater car for work/car sharing, and only wanted one car I'd have one of them!! :thumb:

Yep, really like it, I've always liked the looks of them which is probably the main reason I've always wanted one. It was more expensive than an equivalent age M3 which is probably techincally a better car but hey :D

It's far too soft as standard IMO, and even with some uprated Bilsteins on it it doesn't feel so at home on the track as it could do (I'd expect a Porsche to be a much better prospect "out of the box" on the Ring), but is fine on the road. Having said that, there were about 6 other M Coupes at the Ring at Easter all lapping very very quickly (I'm much happier thrashing my 205 round the track but thats perhaps for 2 main reasons, its not powerful RWD and its worth a lot less!).

I love them MCoupes and would have one but not instead of my 911,they are different animals,and yes i get M Coupes going passed me at the ring.
Also the 911 costs me 500 to insure(Full comp,protected NCB plus cover for roll cage,suspesion ect).
I always look at them tho and admire the shape....nice car mate.

911&#39;s are in a league of their own based on the car alone - but with that said I&#39;m a shit driver and would never own one cos I&#39;d lose all my money buying armco. ;)

Know what you mean,you cant take the right lines when you spend the lap avoiding the armco.
I cannot drive it anywhere near it potental,but i am getting there,it is very rewarding to get right.
Cannot wait for the next trip(May),now ive got the season ticket i can do as many laps as poss.
